Apple’s Studio Display Will Work With PCs, But There’s A Catch

Yesterday, Apple announced their latest standalone monitor called the Studio Display. It is clear that Apple has designed this monitor to work with Macs, but since at its core it is still a monitor, it should work with PCs, right? The good news is that yes it does, but there is a bit of a catch that PC users should take note of.

Apple has confirmed to MacRumors that yes, the Studio Display will work with PCs, but there are certain features of the display that will not work unless it’s connected to a Mac. This includes features like Center Stage, which basically keeps the user in the center of the frame even if they move around, and True Tone, which automatically adjusts the temperature of the display based on ambient lighting.

Also, it seems that the built-in webcam will not work unless it is being used by a Mac that has the latest macOS update, so PC users who want to use the built-in camera are out of luck, but hey, at least the speakers still work, right? It has also been noted that features that require firmware updates will not function, presumably because it will require a Mac computer to download and install those updates.

Apple also notes that the resolution of the Studio Display will vary from system to system, meaning that even though it is a 5K display, maybe if you have a lower-powered PC, it might not be able to support it. To be fair, we imagine that the majority of customers who plan to purchase the Studio Display are probably Mac users anyway, but for those who own both a PC and a Mac and want to be able to switch, these are things you’ll want to pay attention to.

'Returnal' gets a free co-op mode on March 22nd

Sony’s State of Play livestream today was short on major news, but there was one surprising nugget: Returnal is getting a beefy update on March 22nd. Returnal: Ascension adds co-op capabilities and a new survival mode to the game, and it’ll be completely free.

Returnal is a PlayStation 5 exclusive developed by Housemarque. It’s a roguelike shooter where players are trapped in a time loop on a hostile alien planet, and it gets a lot of things right, including massive enemies and a punishing reward system. As a PS5 exclusive, Returnal makes good use of the DualSense controller’s haptics and Sony’s 3D audio tech.

Ascension will be Returnal‘s 3.0 update. The game’s 2.0 update in October 2021 added photo mode and a suspension option that allowed players to save their progress mid-run, but only under certain conditions. It is a roguelike, after all.

Microsoft Is Bringing Tabs To File Explorer In Windows 11

When you browse the web using your browser, you have the option of opening multiple tabs. This allows you to browse multiple websites at once without having different windows open, which streamlines the entire process. However, the same cannot be said when you’re trying to browse files on your computer.

The good news is that if you have a Windows 11 computer, it looks like Microsoft is getting ready to launch a new feature for the operating system that will introduce tabs to the File Explorer. Similar to browser tabs, what this change means is that users will be able to open multiple folders at once within the same window without many different windows open at the same time.

This feature was initially discovered by Windows Insider Rafael Rivera on Twitter where the settings had to be enabled for it to work, but once it was enabled, users have the option of choosing to open a new folder in a tab instead of a separate window. This is a feature that many Windows users have been asking for for years, so it looks like Microsoft has finally listened.

Microsoft has yet to officially announced the feature and as noted by Windows Central, it is currently only available in the Dev Channel, meaning that there is a chance Microsoft could cancel the feature before the next update ships, but fingerscrossed that they won’t!

Nothing Announces Event For March 23, Possible New Phone Incoming

Recently we heard that according to the rumors, Nothing could be working on their own smartphone and that it could launch next month. It turns out that maybe we won’t have to wait that long because Nothing has since announced that they will be hosting an event on the 23rd of March.

We don’t know what will be announced, but seeing as we’re hot on the heels of the rumors of a new smartphone, there is a good chance that this event could see the company officially announce their first mobile device. Also, seeing that there is a Qualcomm Snapdragon logo on the landing page of the website lends support to the speculation that a phone launch is imminent.

Not much is known about the Nothing phone at the moment. We did come across a blurry photo of Nothing’s founder Carl Pei at MWC holding a mobile device, which many have speculated is a prototype of the handset, but once again, apart from that we have no clue what the phone looks like or what kind of hardware it’s packing and what features we can look forward to.

There’s nothing to confirm that the 23rd of March event will be about the phone, but either way, check back with us in the coming weeks if you’re interested in seeing and hearing what the company has to say.

Don’t Ignore Facebook’s Email About Enabling Facebook Protect

If you have received an email claiming that it’s from Facebook asking you to click a link to enable Facebook Protect, we’ll be honest and say that if you thought it was spam or some kind of phishing email, we won’t blame you because the email pretty much reads like what you’d expect a phishing or scam email to look like.

However, it turns out that this is a legitimate email and one that you definitely shouldn’t ignore. This is according to AppleInsider who have confirmed with Facebook who said that the Facebook Protect emails some users are receiving are 100% legitimate, so if you have received one that you either binned or are ignoring, you might want to read it again.

This is because in the email, there is a cut-off date for you to enable Facebook Protect, and once that date has lapsed and you haven’t done anything, you will be locked out of your account until you enable it.

For those who are confused about what Facebook Protect is, it’s basically a feature launched several years ago designed to help protect the accounts of political candidates, but it has since been expanded to include other users. Not everyone will receive these emails because according to Facebook, it’s targeting users who they believe have a greater than average reach on social media, like brands, influencers, celebrities, and so on.

You won’t lose your Facebook account if you don’t enable it, but basically you’ll be locked out until you do once the cut-off date has passed, so if you have come across this email, do take a look at it.

Toddlers can get their frag on with VTech’s baby gamer chair

Kids love to imitate the adults in their lives. That’s why you can find such odd items in the toy aisle as baby-sized irons, mops and vacuums. Now you can add more weirdo item to that list, one that has some members of the Engadget staff howling with laughter: A baby gamer chair. Yes, you read that right. Baby. Gamer. Chair.

VTech, long-time purveyor of kiddie tablets and educational toys is now selling a tiny gaming chair for budding streamers and future Fortnite players. The $50 Level Up Gaming Chair is a plastic simulacra of bigger leather seats made for adults, complete with slick black armrests and a molded back with two cut-out sections for air flow. However, instead of wheels, the chair rests on four boot-like blue feet, so your baby won’t be tipping over while they’re pretending to curse out other players on the included headset. The tiny non-functional headset even has a tiny non-functional mic to complete the look.

Because this is VTech after all, the Level Up Gaming Chair has some interactive electronic parts, namely a light-up keyboard that kids can play with to learn numbers and letters and even piano keys — which we admit, is actually a step up from traditional mechanical gaming keyboards. The keyboard console can be detached for on-the-go play, and the tray it normally rests on can be used for snack time as well so kids never have to leave their gaming throne when it goes on sale this fall. (We recommend pairing it with Fisher Price’s Laugh and Learn Controller.)

WhatsApp Could Be Looking To Further Restrict Forwarded Messages

On messenger platforms such as WhatsApp, misinformation can run rampant as people send and receive messages that may or may not be accurate. The onus is really on the user who has to decide whether or not a message is real and whether they want to share it with others.

However, WhatsApp has tried to curb the spread of false information by placing limits on forwarded messages and also labeling messages that have been forwarded many times, hoping to give some context. Now according to WABetaInfo, it appears that WhatsApp is placing further restrictions on forwarded texts.

According to the latest Android beta of the app, WhatsApp seems to have placed an additional limit on forwarded messages where these messages can only be sent to one group chat at a time. This doesn’t mean that users can’t forward messages to multiple group chats, but you’ll need to do so manually instead of selecting all your group chats at once.

Presumably by making it difficult to forward to multiple group chats at once, it might discourage users from mass forwarding their messages, which in turn will hopefully be able to cut down on the spread of misinformation. Whether or not this is an effective solution remains to be seen, but it’s something that could appear in the next update to WhatsApp.
