It has only been a year since Amazon launched Glow, its kid-focused video calling device that can also be used for interactive gaming. Now according to Bloomberg, Amazon is already discontinuing it, most likely due to lackluster sales. As the publication notes, Glow, while highly rated on Amazon, only has a bit over 500 reviews on the website.
Another possible reason why the company is giving up on the device is a change in people’s behavior. Glow was created so kids could stay in touch with and play with relatives they don’t live with or regularly see. Now that people have gone back to their pre-pandemic routines, there’s even less of a demand for a specialized video calling device.
Amazon spokesperson Kristy Schmidt confirmed to Bloomberg that the company is killing the device. They said:
“At Amazon we think big, experiment, and invest in new ideas to delight customers. We also continually evaluate the progress and potential of our products to deliver customer value, and we regularly make adjustments based on those assessments. We will be sharing updates and guidance with Glow customers soon.”
Glow was a product of Amazon’s secretive Grand Challenge moonshot laboratory, which works on experimental projects, such as those involving cancer and last-mile delivery. It has a projector that beams games onto a 19-inch mat, and kids can interact with the projected image to play with their loved ones even from afar. The device comes with Tangram Bits, which are physical pieces kids can use to solve puzzles. It also comes with a free year-long subscription to Amazon Kids+ that’s necessary to be able to access its games, books and other activities. After that ends, users will have to pay $8 per month for the subscription, or $5 if they’re a Prime member.
Only those who already have a Glow will have to worry about future costs associated with the subscription, though. Amazon listed the device for 55 percent off, or $150, a few days ago, but now it doesn’t seem to be available for purchase anymore.

The latest Disney+ app for the PlayStation 5 finally streams in 4K HDR, Disney announced. While 4K HDR10 is nice, PS5 doesn’t support the far superior Dolby Vision format and can’t handle Dolby Atmos audio either (except for Blu-rays). But more importantly, using the PS5 (or Xbox Series X) for streaming is a waste of electricity — it consumes about 70 watts, while the latest Google Chromecast, Roku or Apple TV devices use just 3-6 watts. Yesterday in Munich, alongside the 12-gen T-series smartphones and other IoT products, Xiaomi launched its new Smart Band 7 Pro equipped with a beautiful 1.64” AMOLED display. According to Xiaomi, the always-on 280 x 486 pixels, 326 PPI display is 84% bigger than the Smart Band 6.
The device was released this summer in China and yesterday was the global launch. Besides the form factor and the larger screen size, the addition of a built-in GPS (GNSS) is one of the main differences from its sibling, the Smart Band 7.
The Xiaomi Smart Band 7 Pro’s stylish high gloss frame chassis encases the beautiful rectangular display covered with tempered glass and anti-fingerprint coating.
The screen delivers a peak brightness of 500 NITs and has an auto-brightness feature. From the settings, you can choose to turn on the always-on option, however, it would probably affect the battery life. When wearing the tracker, the display wakes up by turning your wrist or gently tapping once on the screen. Fashion enthusiasts can customize it with the 150+ watch faces that Xiaomi has designed to enable clothe matching.
The Smart Band 7 Pro offers a suite of health and fitness features, including more than 110 sport modes, an on-wrist running coach with 10 pre-planned running courses at different levels, activity tracking, heart rate monitoring, blood oxygen level (SpO2) measurement, and sleep tracking.

Thanks to the 5ATM rating, the device is water resistant for swimming or taking a shower. According to Xiaomi, you will get up to 12 days of battery life with regular usage.
The high-quality large display makes the device look more like a smartwatch than a fitness tracker. In fact, the 99 euros price tag makes the Smart Band 7 Pro a quality smartwatch packed with standard fitness features at a sweet price.
While the body comes in two flavors, Black or Ivory, Xiaomi offers 6 color options for the strap: Ivory, Olive, Orange, Blue, Black, and Pink. There are also two special edition versions: Pine Green and Moon Gray.
