Honor Magic5 Pro Preview

Honor is coming to MWC with its flagship phone, the Honor Magic5 Pro, a beautifully crafted device that combines elegance and performance in a sleek body. The successor of the Honor Magic4 Pro, the new Honor Magic5 Pro got significant upgrades and is the poster child for Honor’s “human-centric” approach to technology.

Committed to addressing the real needs of customers, HONOR adopts a human-centric approach to product innovation, offering intuitive technology solutions to improve the daily lives of everyone,” said George Zhao, CEO of HONOR Device Co, Ltd.

The specifications list is impressive across crucial aspects of the phone, including design, display, camera, and system performance. We have had the phone for a couple of days, and here are our first impressions. After spending more time with the unit, we will write a complete review, so stay tuned!

The Honor Magic5 Pro with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage will be available for €1199.

Design

The Magic5 Pro is built around a slim chassis with glass on both sides and a large 6.81” dual-curved screen, which means that the curve is present on the front and the back, making the edge look and feel extra thin.

The star of the show is the Star Wheel Triple Camera Design, an evolution of the “Eye of Muse” iconic design featured in the Magic4 Pro

At the center of the device, the Star Wheel beautifully merges into the back cover with curves reminiscent of landscapes or modern architecture. Gracefully combining art and technology, the design language made of harmonious curves was created to pay tribute to Gaudi.

At 8.77 mm and 219g, the Magic5 Pro is a hair thinner and lighter than the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra (8.9 mm, 233 g), which features a same-size display.

The waterproof IP68 chassis is very agreeable, both to the eye and to the hand, thanks to the dual-curved ultra-narrow bezels on both sides that make the device comfortable to hold. Our review unit is Black, and four additional color versions will be available, depending on the markets: Glacier Blue, Meadow Green, Coral Purple, and Orange.

Display

The 6.81″ LTPO display with Quad-Curved Floating Screen has the same 1312 x 2848 resolution as the Magic4 Pro and delivers up to 120Hz refresh rate for the ultimate mobile gaming experience and “butter-smooth” scrolling.

The 1800 NITs peak brightness is impressive, which is one of the highest brightness levels that we have seen on the mobile market. It is even higher than the Galaxy S23 Ultra (1750 NITs).

Camera

The Star Wheel houses a triple camera module with three high-resolution 50MP sensors.

The wide camera features a 1/1.12-inch sensor with an f/1.6 aperture and OIS, which is an improvement over the f/1.8 featured in the Magic4 Pro.

The ultrawide gets an improved f/2.0 aperture that will capture more light than the f/2.2 ultrawide optical system of the Magic4 Pro.

Honor decreased the resolution of the telephoto camera from 64MP with OIS to 50MP with OIS, a wise decision knowing that having more megapixels is not a critical technical requirement for zoom cameras.

The dToF Laser Focusing Sensor is new to the Magic5 Pro and accelerates the focus process by determining if the subject is very close or far from the camera.

The front camera has a 12MP resolution with f/2.4 aperture and a 3D depth sensor.

Performance

Qualcomm’s fastest SoC, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 powers the Honor Magic5 Pro, and we have profusely benchmarked that processor. You can read our complete Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 overview to learn the key functionalities and new features.

Honor offers 12GB of RAM for heavy users, an improvement over the previous generation that featured only 8 GB. That memory will help the phone run smoothly even if you like having tons of apps. If you want to install lots of apps, this is even more important than processor speed.

Thanks to the GPU Turbo X system optimization, the Magic5 Pro should get a little bit extra graphics performance to maximize hardware utilization.

Battery

The 5100 mAh battery is the highest capacity found on the current high-end smartphone market, and it should provide a very good battery life. We are grateful to Honor for offering the 66W charger in the box, knowing that big brands adapters can cost up to $50. Some OEMs do not provide fast chargers with their high-end devices, even when they cost over $1000.

The Magic5 Pro delivers 50W wireless charging which is high for wireless charging. The ability to charge fast a high-performance smartphone is an important feature because it alleviates battery anxiety.

Conclusion

The Honor Magic5 Pro is a very exciting smartphone that looks great in hand or from a technical perspective. In the next few days, we’ll put it through its paces and see how it behaves in the real world with the near-final software. In the meantime, stay tuned and subscribed to our various social channels.

Honor Magic Vs Goes Global @ MWC 2023

Mobile World Congress has brought us many great products, but we are especially excited that Honor is launching the Magic Vs (pronounced v-s and not 5-s or “versus”) to a global audience.

The Honor Magic Vs is Honor’s foldable nemesis to the Samsung Galaxy ZFold4. The Honor Vs was launched in China in late November with good specifications and significant improvements in hinge durability and battery capacity,

Now, this fantastic foldable smartphone is launching “globally,” which means it can be produced at a higher volume, and users in select non-China markets might be lucky enough to get their hands on this device.

Looking at it, you can probably guess that the Honor Magic Vs is a competitor of the Samsung Galaxy ZFold4. We’re still compiling the data for our full review, but there are very few alternatives to the Samsung Galaxy ZFold4, and the Honor Magic Vs is one of them. Hence, its global availability is essential to every potential user in addressed markets.

The Honor Magic Vs has many technical features that folding phones fans should notice. Here are Magic Vs features that are better than the ZFold4:

  • 9″ vs. 7.6 display size
  • slightly higher processor frequency
  • 12GB of RAM vs. 8GB
  • larger battery capacity, 2.5X faster charge speed

The ZFold4 has specific advantages, too, such as the external display and desktop support with Dex and the Samsung S-Pen support, but Honor has an objectively great claim to make because it does have features users tend to care a lot about.

Ultimately, the Honor Vs will probably address a slightly different market where the e-Pen or Desktop mode is not that important. Honor might have a better value proposition for these users, given its specifications.

More importantly, it will spark healthy competition with legacy folding phones OEMs that will benefit every consumer. The Honor Magic Vs is the obvious sizeable foldable alternative at an attractive price for this category.

The Honor Magic Vs will be available with 12GB+512GB in Black and Blue for €1599.

The OnePlus 11 Concept phone includes PC-like liquid cooling

After a wave of teasers, OnePlus has revealed its latest experimental phone — and this time the features are more practical than in the past. The OnePlus 11 Concept centers on “Active CryoFlux” liquid cooling that mimics what you see in some gaming PCs. The system uses a piezoelectric ceramic micropump to send cooling fluid throughout pipelines in the phone (visible on the outside) without “significantly” increasing the phone’s bulk.

The result is a slight but tangible performance improvement, OnePlus claims. The company says the temperature drop boosts games by up to three to four frames per second, and reduces charging times by 30 to 45 seconds. Those figures won’t have you rushing to replace your existing phone, but may help wring the full potential out of an upgrade.

After that, the differences versus the standard OnePlus 11 are mostly cosmetic. The conspicuous pipelines and blue LED lighting are the most obvious changes, but you’ll also find a camera hump with intricate guilloché engraving similar to what you’d find on the dial of a luxury watch.

The OnePlus 11 Concept won’t enter production. However, it won’t be surprising if the liquid cooling and design techniques find their way to future phones. No, this won’t match the raw cooling power found in high-end gaming phones, but it might make OnePlus more enticing if you want above-average speed without carrying a brick in your pocket.

Gearshift Hoodies Help Warm Up Your Transmission

Sure to be this spring’s must-have car fashion accessory (don’t quote me on that), these handmade fleece gearshift hoodies from Etsy shop ShotStarPro make it appear your shift lever wants to prevent a cold start in style.  Available in seven colors (black, grey, white, pink, red, orange, and blue), the hoodies are one-size-fits-most automatic and manual gearshift knobs (save the manuals!) up to 4″ to 5″ tall and up to 3″ wide.

Have a larger gearshift knob? You’re just going to have to knit a sweater for it on your own. If these aren’t featured in the new Fast & Furious movie, I’m going to be sorely disappointed.

Am I going to get my car a gearshift hoodie for its next birthday? Maybe, but first, I’d have to find my gearshift knob, which, last I saw it, was rolling under the passenger seat after it came off during some particularly spirited shifting.

Honor’s exciting folding phone finally makes it to Europe

Back in December, I got to play with Honor’s second foldable, the Magic VS, but the first one it will sell in the West. It was a Chinese-market prototype with several rough edges, but even so, it made a fairly compelling case for its own existence. Now, three months later, the company has rocked up to MWC with the finished version that’s intended to be sold on this side of the equator. The big news is the price, which is pegged at €1,599 (around $1,690) for the one model, with 12GB RAM and 512GB storage, the same as Samsung’s Z Flip 4. The only difference is that, with Samsung’s handset, you’ll get 12GB RAM but only 256GB storage.

When I spent a few days with the handset, I found plenty of features that merited praise, like the fact it folds flat. Certainly, Honor feels that its second-generation hinge, which keeps the handset tidy in your pocket, is worthy of shouting about. And it has promised that the hinge will withstand 400,000 folds before conking out, and you’ll find yourself gravitating towards that internal screen more than you might expect. While not as well-equipped as the 6.45-inch exterior screen, the 7.9-inch foldable OLED is good enough to sit back and enjoy a movie, or your emails, with. And it’s fast enough to run pretty much anything you’d want to throw at it without breaking much of a sweat.

If there’s one wrinkle, it’s that these devices may not be the future of foldables as much as the narrower, more fashionable clamshells. Devices like Oppo’s Find N2 and Samsung’s latest Z Flip are both more pocket-and-wallet-friendly than their swole counterparts. And that counts for a lot for folks who don’t feel the need to whip out a small tablet when they’re scrolling Instagram. But for the sort of people who, like me, are nerdy enough to want a machine they could theoretically do some work from while on the go, the meatier versions are still king.
