Sony didn’t want ‘Roblox’ on PlayStation due to child safety concerns

Sony blocked Roblox from PlayStation consoles because it was worried about inappropriate content reaching children. The revelation comes from a 2022 document, first reported byAxios, uncovered in the FTC’s Microsoft trial. However, Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan said at the time that the company’s stance was softening, leaving the door open to an eventual PlayStation port for the viral user-generated platform.

Ryan explained the decision to withhold Roblox to investors early last year. “Historically, because of the large number of children that play on the PlayStation, we have been very careful with regards to opening them up to anything that could potentially exploit them,” he said at the time. But he struck an optimistic tone for investors eager to see Roblox on Sony consoles. “Over the last couple of years, however, we have reviewed those policies and relaxed a little on this. We have been conservative for too long, and now we are currently engaging with people at Roblox. We hope that the situation will change.”

Despite making the comments over a year ago, Roblox still isn’t on PlayStation consoles. The beloved title, which lets users create, share and play user-created content, is available for Xbox, iOS, Android, Windows and macOS. Nintendo hasn’t commented on Roblox’s lack of availability for Switch, but the console maker has also historically erred on the side of caution in keeping inappropriate content away from kids.

Roblox introduced a content rating system in 2021 to help parents better control the user-created games their children play. More than half of the platform’s daily users are under 13. Although it forbids content displaying sexual activity, illegal substances and swearing, occasional rule-breaking content can slip past moderation in user-created titles. In addition, Roblox is working to hang onto its users as they grow, now allowing content for players 17 and older. It says the 17 to 24 age range is its fastest-growing segment.

iOS 17: Deciphering Laundry Symbols Made Easy

Did you ever wonder what are the weird icons located on your clothes tags? Well, you’re not alone. Prepare yourself for an exhilarating breakthrough that will alleviate your concerns related to laundry and mishaps with your dryer.

Although washing machines have become highly intelligent, many of us frequently find ourselves puzzled by the enigmatic laundry symbols found on the garment’s labels — Fortunately, iOS 17 (currently in beta) has arrived to rescue us, thanks to the introduction of a genuine beneficial feature, the Visual Lookup.

If you are not acquainted with Visual Lookup, it enables you to gather additional information about the subject of a photograph in various applications such as Photos, Notes, Mail, or Messages. For example, if you capture an image of your dog, Visual Lookup will help you discover details about the breed — And now, with the upcoming iOS 17, Visual Lookup will enlighten users on whether it is safe to tumble dry a specific garment.

This thrilling attribute was unveiled by Federico Vittici of MacStories on Mastodon; It works similarly to other categories within Visual Lookup: snap a photo of the clothing tag, tap on the “Look Up…” link and your iPhone will decipher the significance behind the symbols.

Not an original creation by Apple

It is worth noting that this is not an original creation by Apple. Numerous apps for deciphering laundry symbols already exist for both iOS and Android, and it is unfortunate that the developers of those apps are being “Sherlocked” — a term used when Apple integrates a feature into one of its platforms that was previously executed brilliantly by a third-party app.

Even so, from the perspective of a consumer, this addition to the standard iOS feature set is undoubtedly welcome, and it is likely to be embraced by a greater number of users as a consequence, especially if it leads to fewer laundry mishaps or prevents clothes from unintentionally shrinking.

North America’s First Hydrogen Train Revolutionizes Eco-Friendly Transportation

The inaugural voyage of the Coradia iLint hydrogen train on June 17 marked a groundbreaking moment for North America, as it became the first hydrogen-powered train in the region, offering an eco-friendly transportation option for numerous passengers.

Through a collaborative effort involving Alstom, the Government of Quebec, Chemin de fer Charlevoix, Train de Charlevoix, Harnois Énergies, HTEC, and Accelera by Cummins, the successful launch of the hydrogen train covered a 90-kilometer route from Parc de la Chute-Montmorency in Quebec City to Baie-Saint-Paul.

Alstom, in a press release, issued the previous month, announced this momentous achievement; Michael Keroullé, President of Alstom Americas, emphasized the sustainable nature of hydrogen technology, providing customers, agencies, operators, and passengers with greener mobility solutions as a viable alternative to diesel. He also highlighted the significance of this event as a remarkable testament to Quebec’s evolving green hydrogen ecosystem.

Environmental friendliness

The Coradia iLint train operates using a hydrogen fuel cell, emitting solely water vapor during its operation. Not only does it demonstrate environmental friendliness with zero emissions, but it also delivers a more serene and enjoyable travel experience, reducing noise pollution for both passengers and nearby communities.

With its maximum speed of 140 km/h and comparable acceleration and braking capabilities to standard regional diesel trains, the hydrogen-powered train showcases the potential of hydrogen technology as a feasible alternative within the transportation sector.

The entities involved in this endeavor have established an efficient process for obtaining the necessary hydrogen fuel. Serge Harnois, President and CEO of Harnois Énergies, outlined the hydrogen production that takes place at their Quebec City station, followed by transportation in high-pressure tanks to Baie St-Paul. Harnois Énergies, dedicated to energy diversification, considers this project pivotal for the future.

As an innovative partner, Accelera guides customers through the transition to clean energy by providing comprehensive hydrogen solutions. Alison Trueblood, General Manager of Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Technologies at Accelera, expressed their focus on advancing various modes of transportation, including passenger trains, through the adoption of zero-emission technologies.

Moreover, they actively support the development of hydrogen infrastructure by utilizing electrolyzers for hydrogen production. This collaboration with Alstom and other partners drives the progression of hydrogen propulsion technology within the North American market.

To further solidify its commitment to sustainable mobility solutions, Alstom has established an innovation center in Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, Quebec, dedicated to this cause. The center’s primary objective is to develop future platforms tailored specifically to the North American market, incorporating hybrid, battery, or green hydrogen propulsion systems.
