What Ever Happened to Mad Cow?

One of the most existentially frightening illnesses ever to be discovered was mad cow disease, a fatal prion-spread illness that appeared in animals in the 1980s and killed over 200 people during the height of the outbreak in the late 1990s. You don’t hear much about mad cow today, but the threat still looms. Here’s…

OnePlus Watch 2 Unveiled With Battery Life Up To 100 Hours And Google Apps

At the MWC 2024, OnePlus unveiled its latest smartwatch, the OnePlus Watch 2, aiming to compete with Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 6 and the Apple Watch. A significant shift in this wearable compared to its predecessor was the adoption of the Wear OS, providing access to a wide range of apps on the Play Store. The device introduces the Hybrid OS mode, designed to optimize battery life, offering an impressive usage time of up to 100 hours.

OnePlus debuted in the smartwatch market in 2021, and although it offered robust features and a premium build, its use of the RTOS limited app variety, leading to less attention; The OnePlus Watch 2, on the other hand, seeks redemption by adopting the latest Google system, Wear OS 4. It is the first to feature the Hybrid OS, incorporating optimizations from Google to enhance battery autonomy intelligently.

Most modern smartwatches operate with two processors and operating systems – in this case, we have the Wear OS for heavy tasks and the RTOS for sensors, notifications, and Always-On Display. The transition between the two chips is expected to be smarter with Google’s optimizations, with more functions delegated to the low-power microcontroller (MCU). The OnePlus Watch 2 uses the Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 as the main component and the BES 2700 as the MCU, promising efficient processing.

With a sizable 500mAh battery, it rivals the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, offering up to 100 hours of usage; This achievement, if confirmed, is significant, as premium smartwatches typically last a maximum of two days. The device serves as a precursor for future releases, as the Wear OS’s hybrid interface optimizations are likely to be implemented by competitors.

Other specifications include 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and a stainless steel case with MIL-STD-810H, IP68, and 5ATM military-grade protection against impacts, water, dust, and dives up to 50 meters. The 1.43-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 466 x 466 pixels and 326 PPI is covered with sapphire glass for durability.

Health features include heart rate sensors, blood oxygen levels (SpO2), maximum oxygen during exercise (VO2 Max), sleep tracking with snore detection, and dual-frequency GPS. Connectivity is limited to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth (excluding 4G LTE).

Availability and Price

The OnePlus Watch 2 is available for pre-order in black and green at $299.99, with expected availability on March 4th.

Until Dawn and The Quarry developer Supermassive is reportedly laying off around 90 workers

Yet another notable game studio is laying off a significant chunk of its workforce. Supermassive Games, the developer behind interactive horror titles Until Dawn and The Quarry, is cutting around 90 jobs, according to Bloomberg. That’s nearly a third of the studio’s more than 300 employees.

Supermassive confirmed in a statement that the studio will reorganize. “As a result, we are entering into a period of consultation, which we anticipate will result in the loss of some of our colleagues,” it said. “This is not a decision that’s been taken lightly, with many efforts made to avoid this outcome.”

Supermassive notes that it’s not safe from the “significant challenges” facing the games industry. More than 6,000 workers in the industry have lost their jobs since the beginning of the year and we’re not even into March yet.

Meanwhile, indie studio Die Gute Fabrik has paused production amid funding difficulties. The developer of Saltsea Chronicles and Sportsfriends will use its remaining funds to give staff a month of paid time “to catch their breaths” while they look for new jobs. The studio is still seeking backers to help it resume production and hopes to bring back current team members in the future. However, it notes that “the publishing and investment scene is so tough for companies and projects of our scale right now it’s made it extremely difficult to secure funding for our next project without a gap in income.”

MWC 2024: Xiaomi Watch S3 Unveiled With AMOLED Screen And Battery For 15 Days

Aside from releasing their new flagship smartphones globally, the Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Ultra, the brand went on stage during MWC 2024 to also unveil some interesting wearables like the Xiaomi Watch S3. The smartwatch features a circular design with two buttons on the right side (similar to what we saw in the Watch 2, which was also unveiled during the event).

The Watch 3 boasts a 1.43-inch AMOLED screen with over 180 freely available watch faces. The case material is aluminum, and the brand claims that the battery can last up to 15 days on a single charge (without AOD enabled, with AOD enabled it can last up to 5 days).

In terms of the operating system, the device brings the HyperOS, offering more than 150 sports modes (including ten distinct running modes). It also can do health monitoring featuring a 12-channel module for tracking heart rate.

A cool feature is that the users can operate the watch with one hand using wrist movements — Flipping and flicking the wrist can be used for things like rejecting calls, NFC payment (only compatible with MasterCard terminals for now), viewing weather info, and taking photos on the phone using Bluetooth.

Availability and Price

We are still not sure if Xiaomi is bringing this wearable to the US, but if you’re interested in importing it, it will be available in Europe for €149 (~$161). The watch comes with a black/silver bezel and fluororubber strap as standard, with extra colors for bezels and straps (Ocean Blue, Dual-tone Ceramic, Chrome Yellow, and Rainbow) sold separately.

Can your robot lawnmower run Doom? This one can

Did you think you’ve seen the last of Doom running on random stuff? Think again. Landscaping technology company Husqvarna just announced that the game will run on some of its robot lawn mowers. So you can mow down hellspawn just ahead of mowing down errant blades of grass.

Here’s the deal. It’ll only be available on the company’s Automower Nera robotic lawn mower models, beginning this April. Once downloaded, you play the game via the lawn mower’s onboard display. Rotating the control knob turns Doomguy left and right and pressing the knob makes you shoot. Holding down the start button initiates forward movement. It’s Doom. You know the drill.

There are some caveats here. First of all, you have to sign up to download the software by September 9. It won’t be available for US residents, despite Husqvarna making a concerted effort to sell more robot lawn mowers in the United States. Finally, this is just the game running on the onboard display. It’s not as if the mower turns your yard into an actual level, with unwanted greenery representing demonic enemies. Still, it’s always nice to see Doom continue to do its thing.

The idea to make the shooter available to lawn mower enthusiasts came after a successful test run at the gaming event DreamHack Winter 2023, which was held in Sweden last December. This is just the latest example of Doom popping up where it shouldn’t. We’ve seen the FPS running on pregnancy tests, rat brain neurons and even inside of other games, like the sequel Doom II and Minecraft. Most recently, Doom was spotted running on actual gut bacteria with a frame rate so atrocious it would take 600 years to reach the ending.
