Samsung’s One UI 6.1: Galaxy AI Expansion Arriving To Other Devices

Samsung has unveiled the One UI 6.1 update, extending Galaxy AI features to a wider range of Galaxy devices as part of its effort to democratize mobile artificial intelligence; The update will be accessible on models including the Galaxy S23 series, S23 FE (check out our review here), Z Fold5, Z Flip5, and Tab S9 series. This move follows the recent launch of the Galaxy S24 series, representing a hybrid approach that merges on-device and cloud-based AI to enhance the overall mobile AI experience.

President and Head of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics, TM Roh, expressed the company’s ambition to make AI more accessible, aiming to bring the Galaxy AI experience to over 100 million users by 2024. The update introduces communication-enhancing features, including adjusting message tones and translating messages in 13 languages through Chat Assist. Live Translate offers real-time voice and text translations for phone calls, while Interpreter facilitates spontaneous conversations with locals through split-screen text translations.

In terms of productivity, the expanded integration of Galaxy AI enhances day-to-day tasks on supported devices. The new version of the system brings, for example, improvements to the Circle to Search with Google feature, generating intuitive results with a swift circle motion.

Note Assist and Browsing Assist aim to streamline organization and information retrieval, providing features like note formatting, summarization, and news article summaries. Transcript Assist simplifies meeting recording transcriptions and offers summaries and translations.

Samsung also emphasizes creativity with Galaxy AI, offering tools such as Generative Edit for resizing and repositioning objects in photos. Edit Suggestion facilitates faster photo editing, while Instant Slow-mo generates additional frames for slow-motion videos.

Set to roll out from the end of March, The update also introduces AI-generated wallpapers, enhancing customization options for Galaxy devices.

Qualcomm Unveils World’s First Wi-Fi 7 For Automotive Experiences

Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. is driving the evolution of in-vehicle experiences with the introduction of the world’s first Automotive Grade Wi-Fi 7 Access Point solution, Qualcomm QCA6797AQ. In the era of software-defined vehicle architectures, connectivity is a critical component, and Qualcomm’s platform offers a comprehensive suite of solutions, including Cellular 5G/4G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, C-V2X, and precise positioning technologies.

The new solution addresses the increasing demand for advanced in-vehicle experiences and applications as vehicles transform into personalized, connected spaces with advanced infotainment systems and augmented reality dashboards.

There’s a growing need for greater capacity, higher data rates, and more robust wireless connections, and to solve that, Wi-Fi 7 and its innovations like High Band Simultaneous, Multi-link Multi-Radio, 320 MHz channel bandwidth, 4K Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM), and Adaptive Puncturing, emerge as a transformative force.

Wi-Fi 7 enhances link reliability and lowers latency through features like High Band Simultaneous Multi-Link Radio, virtually eliminating dropped connections due to external interference. By being able to operate on the 5GHz and 6GHz channels simultaneously, it optimizes communication channels, resulting in more reliable connections for uninterrupted data transfers and reduced latency, crucial for latency-sensitive applications like streaming and gaming.

The increased capacity of Wi-Fi 7, enabled by the 6GHz spectrum and 320 MHz channels, coupled with features like 4K QAM and Adaptive Puncturing, allows peak throughputs of up to 5.8 Gbps, enabling faster downloads of High-Definition Maps and supports the growing number of Wi-Fi devices in vehicles.

Qualcomm’s Wi-Fi 7 solutions not only enhance in-vehicle experiences but also transform the automotive industry by enabling connected services, making it easier for things like faster software updates, efficient data offloading at service points, and much more. Let’s keep an eye out for what’s to come in the following months!

Riker's Hometown Wants to Put a Perfectly Postured Statue Up in His Name

Captain Kirk has one. Captain Janeway has one. If Star Trek fans are going to insist on slowly but surely getting every major character a landmark in their hometown-to-be, Jonathan Frakes’ legendary Will Riker is certainly up there as a priority—especially one that celebrates his most iconic tactical maneuver.

Why Nimona Got Saved From Disney to Become an Oscar Contender

Nimona went from being a movie that was almost certainly lost to the ether to an Oscar nominee—a story as miraculous as the sumptuous, wildly inventive, and queer as hell film turned out to be when we finally got to see it on Netflix. But it was only allowed to do so when Annapurna helped bring the project out of the…

Framework's new sub-$500 modular laptop has no RAM, storage or OS

Framework is all about modular, upgradable laptops and now the company is offering people a more-cost effective entry point. It has dropped the price of its B-stock Factory Seconds systems (which are built with excess parts and new components). As such, it’s now offering a Framework Laptop 13 barebones configuration for under $500 for the very first time.

The 13-inch machine comes with an 11th-gen Intel Core i7 processor with Iris Xe graphics. So the CPU should be sufficient for most basic tasks and some moderate gaming. Here’s the catch: Frameworks’ barebones laptops don’t include RAM, storage, Wi-Fi connectivity, power adaptor or even an operating system.

Tinkerers (i.e. folks who likely would be most interested in playing around with a Framework system) are likely to have some spare parts kicking around anyway. You can buy whatever other components you might need from the Framework Marketplace. To that end, Framework says it’s selling refurbished DDR4 memory at half the price of new.

One other thing worth noting is that Framework’s B-stock systems have an original display with “slight cosmetic issues.” The company notes that these can range from things like fine lines that can be seen from a certain angle or a lack of backlight uniformity that may be seen on a white screen. A-stock systems have a matte display, but they’re a little more expensive. Factory Seconds laptops are available in the US, Canada and Australia for the time being.
