When does Apple launch the new iPhone 16? Here's everything you need to know

Apple iOS 18 on three iPhones
This is last year’s iPhone 15 Pro. We don’t expect a radical redesign for the new models.
Apple

It’s almost time: Next week, Apple will show off its new lineup of the iPhone 16 models at its iPhone event on Monday, Sept. 9. And if you plan to get your hands on one of the new devices after the event, we’re here to save you time because the new iPhones won’t be available to buy yet.

Apple is pretty consistent when it comes to releasing their new products and we don’t expect that to change this year. We’ll tell you when we expect Apple to release the iPhone 16 after its event. We’ll also let you know when you can expect to download iOS 18 – Apple’s latest software – on your current iPhone.

We don’t yet know how much the iPhone 16 lineup will cost. Currently, the iPhone 15 models start at $799 and range as high as $1,599 for the 15 Pro with 1TB of storage. It will be interesting to see if Apple holds the line on pricing, or plays around with different storage capacities and price points, as it sometimes does.

Want to follow along with us during Apple’s big event? Here’s how to watch the iPhone 16 announcement. (We’ll post our liveblog link closer to the event start time.)

While we won’t have a set date for when the iPhone 16 will become available until the iPhone event on Monday, we can predict the date based on Apple’s past consistency. Here’s what we expect:

  • Monday, Sept. 9: Apple’s official event (confirmed)

  • Friday, Sept. 13: Preorders open

  • Week of Sept. 16: iOS 18 available for download

  • Friday, Sept. 20: New iPhones and other devices in stores

Again, aside from the confirmed announcement event, these dates are only speculation based on Apple’s previous iPhone release history. For instance, Apple generally opens preorders the Friday following the iPhone event. So if Apple follows its previous cadence, you’ll be able to preorder an iPhone 16 on Friday, Sept. 13. Likewise, if Apple keeps the same schedule as the past, that would mean the iPhone 16 will officially be available to buy on Friday, Sept. 20.

How about new Apple Watch and AirPods products expected to be announced alongside the presumed new iPhone 16 series? Generally, they also follow the same dates, but there have been some delays in the past. It’s entirely possible that one or more of these expected products could hit stores in later weeks – possibly even as late as October.

If you’re not planning to buy the new iPhone 16, you’ll still have the option to make your older iPhone similar with the newer models – assuming your iPhone is eligible for iOS 18. (Nearly all models introduced in the past six years are.)

While Apple won’t announce when it’ll release iOS 18 to the public until its event, we can again speculate based on the past. The newest software will be available the week after the event – at earliest, that would be Monday, Sept. 16, though it’s possible it won’t become available until mid-week.

We’ll update with the official dates for new hardware and software after Apple announces them on Monday.

Withings Unveils the ScanWatch Nova Brilliant Edition A Connected Luxury Watch With Health Tracking Features

Today at IFA, Withings unveiled its latest innovation, the ScanWatch Nova Brilliant Edition.

The sibling of the ScanWatch NOVA, which launched in December last year, the Brilliant Edition will be available in November 2024. It features a smaller 39mm case, catering to those with smaller wrists or anyone preferring a compact design.

This model is the most premium offering in Withings’ range, available in titanium silver and a two-tone silver and gold finish. Its design includes a fluted bezel and durable sapphire glass face, combining style with resistance to wear.

Designed for active users, it is water-resistant up to 50 meters (5ATM) and comes equipped with a 5-link bracelet, for comfort and durability. The hybrid smartwatch combines analog charm with modern functionality, offering heart monitoring, notifications, and messages displayed on a high-resolution OLED screen. The silver model’s titanium bezel further enhances durability, while the gold model features a unique bi-color wristband.

Featuring advanced health-tracking technology, the ScanWatch Nova Brilliant Edition offers medical-grade sensors, including an electrocardiogram (ECG) capable of detecting atrial fibrillation (AFib). Users can take a 30-second ECG reading by touching the bezel, with results accessible via the Withings app. The device also monitors body temperature changes to help with early detection of potential illness and support workout recovery. Additional features include monitoring blood oxygen (SpO2) and tracking breathing disturbances. The ScanWatch Nova Brilliant also monitors sleep quality and provides personalized improvement tips.

Fitness enthusiasts will appreciate the watch’s ability to track over 40 daily activities, including walking, running, and swimming. It also assesses Fitness Levels through VO2 Max, a key indicator of aerobic capacity. Users can easily switch between a metal and an FKM wristband, both included in the box.

Available in the U.S., EU, and UK starting in November 2024, the ScanWatch Nova Brilliant Edition is priced at $599.95, €599.95, and £549.95.

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 drops below its Prime Day price

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 is cheaper than we’ve ever seen it before, dropping well below the Prime Day price. The company’s premium smartwatch is available via Amazon for $689, which is a savings of $110.

This is Apple’s latest and greatest (for now) ultra-premium smartwatch. It boasts the company’s Double Tap feature, which lets users pinch quickly in mid-air to bring up the home screen and make adjustments.

The high-end watch is geared toward serious athletes and others with specialized fitness-tracking needs, so the sensors are on point and the exterior is incredibly durable. It still features the same 49-millimeter form factor as the original, so it’s not too chonky. The screen is much brighter than the OG Ultra, up to 3,000 nits. This should make it easier to read in low light conditions, which is another boon for extreme athletes who do early morning training sessions.

As for power, the smartwatch includes Apple’s new S9 chip, which allows for the aforementioned Double Tap gestural controls and upgraded Siri functionality. The battery can last up to 72 hours on a single charge, so long as it’s in low power mode. Otherwise, it’ll brick out after around 36 hours.

This is a whole lot of smartwatch. Not only is it double the price of the Apple Watch 9, but it’s chock full of features that most people don’t need. This is a machine for serious fitness enthusiasts or those who go off the grid for long periods of time. With that being said, today’s sale makes this thing pretty darn attractive for the rest of us.

A four-pack of Apple's AirTags falls back to $75, plus the rest of the week's best tech deals

It’s a bit of a slow week for tech deals, if we’re honest, as many of the better offers we’re seeing this Friday are leftovers from last week’s Labor Day sales. Still, there are a few discounts worth checking out: A four-pack of Apple’s diminutive AirTag trackers are $24 off Apple’s list price, for instance, while Keychron’s C3 Pro, our favorite mechanical keyboard for those on a budget, is still at an all-time low of $25. Other picks from our guides to the best microSD cards and affordable wireless earbuds are on sale as well, as is Sonos’ bag-friendly Roam 2 speaker and Elgato’s new Stream Deck Neo control panel. Here are the best tech deals from this week that you can still buy today.

This Anker 5K power bank for iPhones is cheaper than ever

Modern life dictates that the longer you have a smartphone, the crappier the battery gets. That’s where power banks come in. One of Anker’s leading 5K models for iPhones has dropped to its lowest price ever. The power bank is just $18, down from $26.

This is a well-regarded product. As a matter of fact, a variant of this model made our list of the best power banks. It’s portable and doesn’t even beef up the iPhone too much when attached. It offers 12W fast charging and provides 20 hours of additional smartphone use. That’s a whole lot of doomscrolling, or even joyscrolling.

It folds up and can easily fit into a pocket or bag when not in use. The power bank also includes the company’s ActiveShield safety system that continuously monitors the temperature to avoid overheating.

While advertised as being for iPhones, the power bank is also great for iPads and even some retro iPods. That leads us to the main downside of this device. It uses a Lightning connector, so it won’t work with newer iPhones or iPads with USB-C ports. However, iPhones had a Lighting connector all the way up to the iPhone 14. Statistically, you’re probably reading this on one of those iPhones right now. If that’s true, this is a great power bank for the money.

LG flaunts its stretchable displays on the catwalk

LG’s stretchable displays that we first saw at CES 2023 have made a new public appearance at a fashion show, the company announced. The tech — which LG now calls Stretchable — appeared as part of clothing and bag concepts at 2025 Seoul Fashion Week.

The displays were added to the front of garments, sleeves and clutch bags designed by Korean designers Youn-Hee Park and Chung-Chung Lee. “We have been able to design future fashion concepts with new materials that have never existed before,” Park said.

Stretchable displays can be pulled, bent and twisted, so they go a step farther than the bending and twisting displays used in foldable smartphones. To make them more supple, LG built the substrate material from a silicon similar to that used in contact lenses, with microLEDs smaller than 40-micrometers for the light source. LG notes they can be stretched from 12 to 14 inches or about 20 percent.

Flexible wearable tech has been a much researched feature for fashion and even things like invisibility cloaks. South Korea’s government created a national project to test their commercial potential for new types of wearable tech across multiple industries. The main challenge has been to make it more like fabric instead of stiff plastic, but LG seems to have at least partially cracked the problem.
