Galaga Cake: Insert Knife, Not Quarters

Look at this Galaga arcade machine. Wait, that’s no arcade cabinet. That’s a delicious and realistic cake just waiting to enter the bellies of Galaga-loving gaming geeks.

galaga cake 1This amazing achievement in arcade mimicry cake was made by Pink Cake Box in Denville, NJ. It has chocolate and vanilla layers with Oreo buttercream in between. This may be a tall tale, but the story goes that it looked so realistic in person that some Bar Mitzvah party attendees actually attempted to play it.

Didn’t they get the hint when the quarters failed to go into the machine? Or when their fingers sank into that sweet fondant icing? I don’t know about you, but I want some Galaga for dessert now.

E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial Celebrates its 30th, Makes Millions Feel Really Old

If you grew up in the 80s, you saw E.T. at least a few times – it was practically required of any child of the era. Depending on how old you were, you may have even had some of the tie-in toys, including the bike with the plastic alien sitting in the milk carton up front. Now, E.T. is celebrating its 30th anniversary (if you can believe it) and will be coming to Blu-ray for the first time on October 9th.

et 30th anniversary blu ray

The special edition Blu-ray will include the complete 1982 theatrical movie and is a combo pack with the Blu-ray, DVD, digital copy, and Ultraviolet copy of the film. The movie has been digitally remastered for Blu-ray and supports 7.1-surround sound. Special features of the movie will include The E.T. Journals with never before seen behind-the-scenes footage.

Other extra features will include a cast reunion and interviews with Steven Spielberg. One of the things I’ve always wanted to see are the scenes that were cut from the film with Harrison Ford. I’ll certainly be buying the movie so I can watch with my kids, as this is one of my favorite movies of all time. You can pre-order the disc set over at Amazon now for just $17.96(USD) – that’s nearly half off the $34.98 list price.

Arcade Mash-up Prints Confuse and Amuse

Say the words Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Dig Dug, Centipede, Galaga or Joust, and you’ve just named some of my all-time favorite arcade games. So when I stumbled onto these unusual variants of these 1980s classics, I was at once befuddled and at the same time intrigued.

donkey dug

These mash-up prints were created by 9times1minus1 (also known as “eight”) over on Etsy, and they envision the characters from iconic arcade games invading other games. So for instance, there’s Donkey Dug, which puts Pooka, Fygar and Dig Dug on Donkey Kong’s girders.

joust bros

Then, there’s Joust Bros., which is the perfect synthesis of Joust and Mario Bros. I always thought those levels looked similar, and flinging turtles into the lava pit below makes just about as much sense as ostriches anyhow.

donkey burger

Other mashups include Donkey Burger (DK x BurgerTime), and the oddly named, but somehow appealing Ms. Paciaga (Ms. Pac-Man x Galaga).

While I’m not sure that I would have wanted to play all of these games, I have to say that some of them look like they would have worked just fine as 9times1minus1 envisions them. When you really think about it, did the plots and characters in any 1980s video game really make that much sense? Why couldn’t Jumpman have been a chef on a quest to make the perfect hamburger? I would have ponied up a quarter to try my hand at that.

If you’d like to line your walls with these unusual video games, they’re available for $25(USD) each as 16×20 digital prints over on Etsy.

Pac-Man Arcade Candy Turns Dot Gobblers into Gobbl-ees

Retro arcade fans with a sweet tooth will want to pop on over to the NeatoShop and grab a box of these Pac-Man arcade candies, created in the shape of everyone’s favorite yellow dot-gobbling puck-man.

pac man candy

Each portion of Pac-Man candy sells for $3.95(USD) and comes packaged in a tiny cardboard arcade machine, loaded with about 30 tasty Pac-candies. Despite the fact that they are yellow, they’re actually strawberry flavored, and not lemon or banana as you might think.

And if you prefer the flavor or power pellets and ghosts, don’t forget about the original Pac-Man candies from a few years back.

Bluetooth Brick Phone Handset: The 80s Called and Wants Its Phone Back

Want to one-up the douchebags who flaunt their fancy Bluetooth headsets while talking into space? Bring this bad boy out and they’ll know how OG you are. It’s also a Bluetooth headset, but it’s in the form of the classic 80′s brick phone that your elders – or you – used to rock back in the day.

I don’t know if creator Brad Helmink made it extra large for effect or if it’s just been a long while since I saw one of these, but my goodness. You might need a building permit to own one of these.

Like most Bluetooth devices, all you need to do is pair the brick phone with your phone and you’re ready to go to John F. Kennedy High School and participate in insider trading.

If your testicles meet the minimum weight limit needed to carry the 80s Bluetooth Brick Phone, head to indiegogo and pledge at least $45 (USD) to be one of the first to own it if and when the fundraiser meets its goal of $55,000. That’s chump change for a teen star or a stock broker.

PLX's XWave Sport gives brainwave interfaces a casual look, triggers '80s flashbacks

Brainwave-guided interfaces are common. Most of the time, though, they’re not what we’d call subtle. PLX Devices hopes to have that licked through the XWave Sport, a brain interface that disguises all its sensors through a fuzzy, exercise-friendly headband. Underneath the incredibly 1980s-retro (but washable!) look, you’ll get about six hours per charge of tracking for concentration, relaxation and other noggin-related data that can transmit over Bluetooth to apps for Android, iOS or old-fashioned PCs. An SDK is available now, but pre-orders for the $100 XWave Sport won’t ship until September 20th. That should give us enough time to perfect our Flashdance reenactments.
