LG outs seven-strong 2013 Google TV range

LG’s Google TV line has always taken a back-seat to the company’s homegrown smart TV platform, but all that could change with the firm’s 2013 line set to debut at CES 2013. LG plans seven Google TV models – spanning five screen sizes – for the new year, the GA7900 series and GA6400 series, with select Premium CINEMA SCREEN sets and integration of a new Magic QWERTY Remote.

That remote – based on the recently-updated non-QWERTY version – will support easy text entry along with natural language recognition and gesture control. Users will be able to ask for a specific channel by name, or website, as well as ask for a specific movie or TV show title; alternatively, asking for a genre – such as “romantic comedy” – will pull up a list of results from all potential sources.

Meanwhile, a new Home Dashboard will consist of “cards” filled with organized apps and content, with a “My Interest” card for weather and news. OnLive will be preloaded, for cloud gaming, and Android phones and tablets will be supported for remote control and slinging YouTube videos directly to your big-screen.

Under the hood, there’s a dualcore CPU and LG’s TruPicture XD engine; LG’s passive 3D system is also included. The GA6400 series will be available in 42-, 47-, 50-, 55- and 60-inch sizes, while the GA7900 series will come in 47- and 55-inch sizes.

LG says the new models will be available in the US initially, with broader availability to come later. No word on pricing, but we’re likely to find out more details at CES 2013 in a couple of weeks time.

Queen’s Christmas Message to reportedly air in 3D, project the royal presence further (update: not entirely first)

Queen's Christmas Message to be broadcast in 3D, project the royal presence

Loyal subjects of the United Kingdom who also embrace the cutting edge of TV may get an extra treat this year. Queen Elizabeth II has reportedly recorded her annual Christmas Message in 3D, supposedly becoming the first member of the British Royal Family to embrace the video format after Prince William turned it down for his wedding. We’ll naturally need 3D glasses to catch all the nuances if it happens, although the extra dimension wouldn’t be exclusive to the producers at BSkyB who captured it: both the BBC and ITV should supposedly have access as well. While donning funny-looking eyewear for a speech isn’t usually our first choice for entertainment, we’ll make an exception for Her Majesty if Buckingham Palace confirms the 3D broadcast. Besides, it may be the perfect test of a new 3D TV waiting under the tree.

Update: Thanks to reader Steve, we now know that claims of this being the Queen’s first sojourn into 3D weren’t right. While it would certainly be the first Christmas Message in 3D, we’ve learned that a CBC TV crew only just got to shoot in 3D earlier this year. Technically, the very first 3D footage of Queen Elizabeth II was recorded on her coronation in 1953, but it wasn’t discovered and processed until just recently.

Foldify lets you create and print 3D paper figures from your iPad

There are a lot of hobbyists out there that enjoy collecting various action figurines, but sometimes it can be fun to create your own and make them however you want. Start-up company Pixle will soon be releasing a new app called Foldify that will let you create and print out 3D paper figures right from your iPad.

From the video, the app looks to be extremely intuitive, and it lets you choose from tons of different 3D shapes. From there, you can then add color, as well as different types of eyes, noses, and mouths to create a unique face on your figurine. Then once you’re done, you can print out the layout via AirPrint and then fold together your creation.

One of the coolest aspects of the app is the preview pane, which lets you see what your 3D paper figurine looks like before you even print it out and put it together. It updates in real time and even lets you rotate it to get a 360-degree view of the figurine, that way you can correct any mistakes or improve on some areas before you print out the final product.

The app will be compatible with all iPad versions except the first-generation iPad (not enough memory), and we’re not sure if it’ll be available for the iPhone and iPod Touch or not, but either way, it looks like the type of app that would be way better on an iPad anyway. The company hasn’t released any more details on the app other than the video, but you can submit your email address to let them notify you when the app gets released.

Staples to offer ‘Easy 3D’ printing service, put an end to hackneyed hockey masks

Staples to offer 'Easy 3D' printing service, put an end to hackneyed hockey masks

Just one more robbery and then we can happily retire. But there’s this nagging feeling that our criminal swan song should be more than just another Class B felony — it should be art. That’s why we’re heading over to Staples to collect a 3D printed mask that, for once, reflects how we actually feel inside. It’s easily done: you upload your design files and Staples prints them out using a full-color 506dpi Mcor IRIS printer, ready for you to collect in-store or have delivered. The “Easy 3D” service will handle architectural designs, maps, medical models, replica weapons and anything else that can be made with fragments of paper arranged in 0.1mm layers up to a maximum height of six inches. The only downside is that the service — which is due to start early next year — will initially only be available in Belgium and the Netherlands. But they have banks too, right?
