Charizard Nintendo 3DS XL headed for Japan soon

Earlier this year, there was the Pikachu-themed Nintendo 3DS XL which was introduced on an exclusive basis to the folks in Japan via Pokémon Centers in the Land of the Rising Sun, and this time around, I would presume that success of the Pikachu-themed model has inspired the folks over at Nintendo to introduce a Charizard-themed Nintendo 3DS XL – following the same modus operandi, of course.

However, this time around the Charizard offering will be unlike the Pikachu 3DS offering, where the latter needed to be reserved should you want to pick one up, as the Charizard model will be a whole lot more elusive (quite unlike the common Pokemon that it is in the game). It is all down to lady luck now, as reservations will be decided through a lottery system which will be held from November 3rd to November 26th. Lottery winners will then have the option to pick up the special edition Charizard 3DS XL for 18,900 yen in the time window that is between December 15th this year and January 14th, 2013.

Nintendo trims losses as sales continue dive: slashes forecast by 70%

Nintendo continues to see gaming hardware sales fall, but the company has trimmed losses and is pegging its hopes on Wii U as it slashes financial predictions. Numbers for the first half of 2012 confirm another drop in net sales, down to 200,994 million yen ($2.52bn) in the period of April to September 2012, with net losses of 27,996 million yen ($351m). Nintendo 3DS sales rose, up to 5.06m units, primarily thanks to the new 3DS XL, but Wii sales dived to 1.32m units.

Nonetheless, while it was a six month period of losses, those losses weren’t quite as dramatic as in previous years. Net loss was roughly half of what Nintendo suffered a year ago, while operating income – although still a loss of 29,159 million yen ($365m) – was still better than the 57,346 million yen loss in 2011.

Still to come is the Wii U, though Nintendo does point out that production costs for the console – which entered mass production in September – will have an impact on profits too. The company now expects to make just 6,000 million yen ($75m) in net income for the full fiscal year ending March 31 2013, rather than 20,000 million yen, based on a fall in predicted operating income and ordinary income.

The Wii U will go on sale in the US on November 18, priced from $299.99. The console features a new, tablet-style GamePad controller and smart TV functionality.

Nintendo reports continued first-half losses for 2012, is waiting on the Wii U

Nintendo reports continued first-half losses for 2012, is waiting on the Wii U

Nintendo’s reported its financial results for the first of half of the year, and things are still a little rocky. Net sales in the last six months have decreased 6.8 percent compared to the same point last year, while net income continues to drop, this time by 27,996 million yen. As of September 2012, Nintendo has now sold over 22 million 3DS units (three million more since last quarter), while the Wii remains just shy of the 100 million milestone, settling at 97.2 million units sold. Nintendo looks to be in a similar position to last year, with customers still waiting for the company’s next big console to appear — and the gamesmaker hoping they will. Laying blame at the strong yen, the company has dramatically cut its forecast for the rest of the year, down from 20 billion ($250 million) to 6 billion yen ($75 million), pinning its hopes on 3DS sales ahead of the Wii U’s global launch later this year.

Nintendo’s new 3DS XL colors and patterns are worth nerding-out over

Nintendo, dating back to the Nintendo 64, loves to re-release systems with different colors to boost sales. Often, these colors are solid, and aren’t a really great reason to get another system that you already own. But currently, Nintendo only sells two versions of its flagship portable system, the Nintendo 3DS XL. Right now, Americans are stuck with bright blue or bright red, and they’re kinda ugly. That could be changing soon. Nintendo announced today that they were expanding the 3DS line to include 5 new colors, including an all-black-everything model that’s very handsome. In addition to the new colors, there will be three patterned 3DS XLs. One has a dots-and-fruit patter, and it comes as part of a Animal Crossing bundle. Europe’s getting a bright yellow 3DS with Pikáchu emblazoned on it, in addition to a 3DS that comes with Mario Kart 7 pre-installed. Perhaps the most exciting announcement is the 3DS that comes with the Super Mario Bros. 2 Pack, which simply screams luxury with its patterned iconic question mark boxes, coins and mushrooms. Hey, Nintendo, if the whole Wii U thing doesn’t work out, I’d love to see you take Louis Vuitton on.

Nintendo 3DS titles now on eShop in Europe, US eShop in two weeks

European consumers will be getting a special edition Pikachu 3DS XL by the end of the year, but if you’re in the mood for something a little more immediate, you’ll probably enjoy this next Nintendo Direct reveal. Nintendo announced today that a number of its first-party 3DS titles are now available on the European eShop, including Super Mario 3D Land, Star Fox 64 3D, Mario Kart 7, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D.

Never fear, US 3DS owners – you’ll be getting these games too, just not today. Nintendo says that all four of the titles listed above will be launching on the US eShop on October 18, and each will set you back $40. True, you could probably find each one of those games for less at a brick and mortar store, but if you want to download from the comfort of your home, it’ll have to be at full price.

All of these are must-haves for 3DS owners, though some of them aren’t particularly new. While Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land offer players entirely new experiences, Star Fox 64 3D and Ocarina of Time 3D are (obviously) remakes of the famous N64 games. That said, both have been given a graphics boost on the 3DS, along with some added features – an improved multiplayer mode in Star Fox 64 3D, along with the Master Quest and Boss Rush modes in OoT 3D – so they’re still worth checking out.

Hopefully these are the first in a long line of Nintendo retail releases on the eShop. We’ve had plenty of older Nintendo games pop up on the eShop, but retail 3DS games are an entirely different beast. If Nintendo keeps this up, we have a feeling that our wallets will be running on empty more often than they usually are.

Special edition Pikachu 3DS XL lands in Europe later this year

Bored with the red and blue 3DS XL variants Nintendo is currently offering? If you live in Europe and like Pokemon enough to let everyone know, you’re in luck, because Nintendo has announced that its special edition Pikachu 3DS will be launching in Europe later this year. The handheld, which is bright yellow in color and features a large image of Pikachu on the front, was announced today during the company’s latest Nintendo Direct livestream.

Prior to this announcement, this 3DS XL was exclusive to Japan. There doesn’t appear to be a game that comes bundled with it, and pricing hasn’t been announced yet. A solid release date was also missing from Nintendo’s reveal, but the company does say that it’ll be available in Europe before the Sun sets on 2012.

Also unknown is whether or not this variant will make its way across the Atlantic to the US. Nintendo is notorious for launching variants of its handhelds and consoles that remain exclusive to Japan, so the fact that it’s launching in Europe is a good sign. Then again, if the US releases of Xenoblade and The Last Story are any indication, US consumers could be waiting a while, if they get it at all.

Don’t want to carry around a bright yellow 3DS XL that features Pikachu’s adorable little mug? Nintendo has you covered there too, as it will also be launching a special Mario Kart 7 bundle in Europe on November 17. The bundle features a white 3DS XL that comes with Mario Kart 7 pre-installed. Nintendo is keeping its mouth shut on pricing for this bundle as well, but we’ll keep an ear to ground for additional details. Stay tuned.

Pika? Yes, pika: this very yellow Pokemon-themed Nintendo 3DS XL is heading to Europe this year

The incredibly bright, somewhat terrifying yellow Nintendo 3DS XL that Japan got last month is now heading to Europe, according to a Europe-specific Nintendo Direct press conference this afternoon (via Joystiq). The Pikachu-themed 3DS doesn’t have a solid release date just yet, but it’s said to arrive at some point in 2012. A price also isn’t included (though it costs ¥18,900/$238 in Japan), nor is it known if the device will be exclusive to one retailer — in Japan, you can only buy a 3DS XL plastered with Pikachu’s indifferent smirk from a Pokemon Center. Regardless, it’s clearly super, super cute, and we’ll have more definite information on it soon.

Does this mean it’s coming to the US? Keep those poke-fingers crossed, trainers.

Nintendo Announces New Black 3DS XL and Other Colors for Japan

It seems Nintendo has taken Wesley Snipes’ advice and bet on black. Nintendo has announced that it will be launching a new black version of the 3DS XL, known as the 3DS LL in Japan, on November 1. The console has the same hardware, it’s just a black satin finish. Nintendo has some other new colors set to launch in Japan at ¥18,900 (~$240 USD) as well.

The other colors include a pink and white version, a silver and black version, a black and red version, and a blue and black version. Nintendo is also talking about some of its limited-edition bundle packs that will include the console and a video game. One of the bundle packs includes the Monster Hunter Tri G pack including a black console and the game – also landing on November 1 for ¥21,800 (~$277 USD).

There’ll also be a special Animal Crossing bundle for the ¥22,800 (~$290 USD), including a white console with various different colored dots and fruits on it. Perhaps most interesting is the Super Mario Bros. 2 pack that has a black and red console with little images from the game on the cover such as stars and the game’s iconic question mark boxes. That bundle pack will sell for the same price. There’s no word on if or when these special editions might come to the US.

Nintendo shows off new black 3DS XL/LL and special editions

The Nintendo 3DS XL/LL is the larger screen version of the original 3DS portable that has been available for a while. Nintendo has added a new color to the lineup for the larger screen portable console and is showing off some limited-edition bundles for the console as well. The new colors are an effort to spur sales of the 3-D portable console.

Nintendo says that on January 11, it will launch a black version of the 3DS XL/LL. The company is set to launch other colors of the console this month in Japan. Nintendo is set to launch this week a pink and white, silver and black, white, and red and black versions of the console in Japan. A blue and black version is also coming with all the consoles selling for ¥18,900.

The first of the limited-edition bundle packs is the Monster Hunter 3 (Tri) G Pack. This pack will launch on November 1 and will sell for ¥21,800. The console itself is black, and it comes bundled with the Capcom video game. The next limited-edition bundle is the Animal Crossing Tobidaseru Pack that will launch on November 8.

The console in this bundle pack is white with red, green, and yellow objects and dots on the white background. The cooler of limited-edition bundle packs is the new Super Mario Bros. 2 pack set to launch on November 15 for ¥22,800. The bundle will include the video game and has a red and black console inside with little star shapes and other designs gamers will recognize from the video game.
