Detune’s Korg M01D for Nintendo 3DS sparks nostalgia, lands in May (video)

Detune's Korg M01D for Nintendo 3DS sparks nostalgia, lands in May (video)

This isn’t the first time a Korg synth has been re-imagined in software form, it’s not even the first (or second) time on Nintendo’s DS. But, when Detune releases its M01D for the handheld console, it’ll spark more than a little nostalgia for synth enthusiasts. Why? Because it’s heavily inspired by Korg’s legendary M1 synth, complete with all its sounds (and yes, the famous piano patch included), plus some new ones thrown in for good measure. The DS version includes a step sequencer (eight tracks with up to 64 steps per sequence) that you can compile together in “scenes.” Borrowing from other parts of the Korg family, the M01D app also offers a KAOSS mode, too, no doubt using one of those screens serving as the touchpad. You can preserve your creativity by saving to SD card, or the usual internet sharing options, and heck there’s even a 3D viewing mode too. Lordy! How that will actually look, we don’t know, or at least we won’t until its May release in Japan, before reaching the rest of the world in Summer.

Nintendo 3DS update moves your saves from retail games to downloads

Nintendo 3DS update lets gamers move saves from retail games to downloads

Let’s say you bought a pair of cartridge-based games to go with your Nintendo 3DS, but you’re embracing our all-digital future and want to replace them with downloadable copies. You won’t have to toss all your game progress at the same time: a newly available 3DS firmware update includes a tool to move save files from a retail copy to its downloadable version. The transfer is strictly one-way, though, so there’s no falling back for gaming Luddites. Nintendo offers a bonus if you’re fully in step with the online world, though — background downloads can now start just by closing the lid while the eShop is running. Both elements of the update are simple on the surface, but they could go a long way in helping us ditch a legacy of plastic game libraries.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity now available

If you’re a fan of Pokémon video games, a new game in the franchise launched yesterday as an exclusive for the Nintendo 3DS. The game is called Pokémon Mastery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity. The game will allow players to build their own Pokémon Paradise and to discover special Magnagates using the Nintendo 3DS camera.

The game supports cooperative multiplayer modes and allows players to purchase additional content to expand their experience. Players can choose from five different favorite Pokémon characters including Pikachu, Snivy, Tepig, Oshawott or Axew. Nintendo says that a lot of Pokémon in the game come from the Unova region made popular in Pokémon Black Version and the Pokémon White Version games.

In Gates to Infiniti there are over 20 distinct Mystery Dungeons that change every time they are entered. That means players can replay each dungeon and have a near-infinite number of adventuring possibilities. One of the key functions of the game is integrating the use of the built-in camera on the portable console.

Players are able to scan any circular object in their environment using the camera to unlock Magnagates. Those Magnagates unlock additional dungeons to explore. The multiple player mode supports up to three players when used in cooperative Companion Mode. Treasure and experience earned in multiplayer mode is carried over to the main single player game. A new download pack is also available right now adding new items to collect and new Pokémon to interact with.

Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon for Nintendo 3DS launches this month

Back in 2001, Nintendo launched a video game focused on Mario’s brother Luigi called Luigi’s Mansion. Nintendo has announced that the sequel to that game is set to launch on March 24, which is this coming Sunday. The game will be a Nintendo 3DS exclusive title.

The game is called Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon and promises to be a spooky adventure for Luigi fans. The game has a number of ghosts that need to be captured, puzzles to be solved, and haunted mansions to explore. The game kicks off Nintendo’s Year of Luigi that will see Mario’s younger brother celebrated with a number of new video games during 2013.

In Dark Moon, Luigi has to explore several unique mansions featuring colorful 3-D visuals. Each mansion has numerous ghosts that Luigi has to capture and challenging puzzles for players to solve. The game also features treasure for Luigi to collect.

Luigi will capture the ghosts using his Poltergust 5000 vacuum cleaner and new abilities unlocked during the game. Players can replay each mission to improve their score by collecting more treasure or losing less health. Nintendo says that almost every object in the rooms of the game mansions can be interacted with. The game will also support multiple player modes with up to four players using local wireless, download, or online play.

Nintendo European eShop restriction lifted, get your 18+ games at any hour

Nintendo’s European arm worked out a deal with Germany’s video game regulation body, USK, and its 18+ eShop games are now available at any hour on the 3DS and Wii U. In a missive issued to European Nintendo console users, the company said “adults can browse and buy all games at any time of day” from now on. Said agreement was only reached after “analysis of the Parental Controls system on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS” by USK, which found the parental control systems “in practice” with standards.

The bizarre restriction, which originally allowed sales of 18+ games through the European eShop only between 11PM and 3AM, was caused by USK’s decency and violence standards. As Nintendo’s European branch is based out of Germany, the German laws impacted the entire region’s eShop access. But no longer! Assassin’s Creed 3 at 10AM? You bet! ZombiU at 2:13PM? Why not! Of course, with download / install times topping four hours, you may wanna get started sooner than later on downloading the bigger games.

Nintendo 3DS XL Pikachu edition unveiled

Nintendo has announced that on March 24 it will be releasing a limited edition yellow Nintendo 3DS XL that features a cute outline of Pikachu on the back. The handset is being released the same day as the upcoming Pokemon video game for the 3DS, and Nintendo is offering a game for free to those who purchase both the special edition handset and the Pokemon game.

On March 24, Nintendo will also be releasing Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity, which it boasts as a game with a “deep and compelling story full of unexpected twists.” Gamers can choose to play as one of five different Pokemon through randomly generated Mystery Dungeons, where battles await and other pokemon can be recruited.

Says Nintendo, the Mystery Dungeons that are generated are “near infinite”, meaning players won’t be getting bored any time soon. In addition, entrances to new dungeons can be discovered via “everyday circular objects,” which the gamer will scan with the 3DS’s camera. It doesn’t specify what these everyday objects are, however. Only those with a 3DS will be able to play; it isn’t being offered on any other system.

The special edition 3DS will be available for $199.99 and will include a 4GB SD card. The Gates to Infinity game, meanwhile, will be priced at $34.99. Those who purchase both and register them will be given a download code for one of five free games: Super Mario 3D Land, Art Academy: Lessons for Everyone, Star Fox 64 3D, Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, and Freakyforms Deluxe: Your Creations, Alive!

Nintendo slapped with $30.2 million in damages for infringing glasses-free 3D patent

Nintendo slapped with $30.2 million in damages for infringing glasses-free 3D patent

In 2011, former Sony employee Seijiro Tomita launched a suit against Nintendo, claiming the 3DS infringed on a patent he holds to display 3D visuals without glasses. Today, a federal court in New York decided to award Tomita with $30.2 million in damages for Iwata and Co.’s infringement. The house that Mario built unsuccessfully argued that it didn’t rely on key parts of the patent, and that Tomita was just one of several folks it met with when it was looking into 3D tech in 2003. Nintendo’s pockets are certainly deep enough to handle the sting, but we can’t imagine it’s a welcomed loss with sales forecasts taking dips.

Nintendo 3DS XL Mint White Hits Japan This April 18th

Nintendo 3DS XL Mint White Hits Japan This April 18thNintendo is one company that has more or less perfected the art of rolling out as many colors and designs as possible for a single portable console, and yet are able to continue to maintain a high selling ratio despite flooding the market with what some other companies might deem to be “gimmicks”. Well, it has just been announced in Japan that they will be introducing a spanking new Nintendo 3DS XL (although in the Land of the Rising Sun, that will be known as the Nintendo 3DS LL) this coming April 18th.

Just like all of the other Nintendo 3DS XL consoles, this Mint White version will retail for 18,900 yen a pop, retaining the same design although the green lid (mint here) would complement the overall white case. Not only that, April 18th will also see a special edition bundle arrive that pays homage to the latest Tomodachi Collection life simulation game. When will us folks be able to get the Mint White Nintendo 3DS XL? Time will tell, and you can always import one if patience is not your strong suit. [Press Release]

Nintendo announces 'mint white' 3DS XL, Tomodachi Collection bundle for Japan

Just in case your desire to catch them all extends to Nintendo 3DS variants, the company announced today that in Japan it’s releasing a new mint white edition of the 3DS XL (called the LL in its home country) April 18th. Priced at 18,900 yen just like the (many) others, it keeps the styling simple with a green lid and white casing. Also arriving on the same day is a special edition bundle commemorating the latest Tomodachi Collection life simulation game, priced at 22,800 yen and showing off a more distinctive splotchy look. You can get all the info straight from virtual Iwata’s news desk in the Nintendo Direct video embedded after the break while we keep an eye out for new models — like that slick transparent demo unit — crossing onto US shores this summer.

Nintendo 3DS Coming In Light Blue, Gloss Pink To Japan This March

Nintendo 3DS Coming In Light Blue, Gloss Pink To Japan This March

Nintendo is always announcing new colors for its video game systems, especially its Nintendo 3DS. Just last month, Nintendo introduced a blue Nintendo 3DS bundled with a digital copy of Fire Emblem Awakening. The 3DS also has some cool Fire Emblem branding on it, which we’re sure fans of the popular RPG series were drooling over.

Two new Nintendo 3DS colors are being introduced today, but will only be available in Japan for the time being. If you’ve been looking for a 3DS to be covered in either Light Blue or Gloss Pink, then you’re in luck as those are the exact two colors Nintendo is announcing today. Both variations will come with double the space as a 4GB SD card will be included, instead of the standard 2GB SD card. (more…)
