Capcom Creates Mega Man Nintendo 3DS, 3DS XL Case

Capcom Creates Mega Man Nintendo 3DS, 3DS XL Case

Nintendo announced it will be making two very cool looking Nintendo 3DS XLs available in June and July, but not to be outdone, Capcom has announced it won’t be offering its own unique Nintendo 3DS and 3DS XL, but instead, will be producing a case to celebrate the anniversary of one of its most iconic characters.

The case Capcom will be producing is Mega Man-themed and will be available for both the Nintendo 3DS and 3DS XL as a way to continue the blue bomber’s 25th anniversary, which by our records should have ended last year. In any case, the Mega Man case looks to be made of a metallic material and prominently displays an 8-bit Mega Man on the front, while the back has a logo for Mega Man’s 25th anniversary. (more…)

Nintendo Offers Refurbished 3DS, DSi XL Starting At $99

Nintendo Offers Refurbished 3DS, DSi XL Starting At $99

We know there are many of you who are eyeing some of Nintendo’s recently announced Nintendo 3DS bundles that either feature an exclusive Animal Crossing: New Leaf design or Luigi-themed design. We also know spending hundreds of dollars for a handheld gaming device may not be something you could afford right now, which is why Nintendo has started to sell pre-owned Nintendo 3DS and DSi XL handhelds in its North American online store.

The “authentic Nintendo refurbished products” may feature some “minor cosmetic blemishes,” but Nintendo will provide a one-year warranty with these devices and guarantee them to be technically fully functional as they’ve been “cleaned, tested and inspected to meet Nintendo’s high standards.” The prices for the handhelds are certainly in a range most budget-minded customers could appreciate as Nintendo offers a Metallic Rose or Midnight Blue DSi XL for $99, while $169 will get you an Aqua Blue or Midnight Purple 3DS along with a copy of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. Nintendo now selling refurbished DSi XL and 3DS units for $100 and up

Nintendo now selling refurbished 3DS and DSi XL

It’s easy for us to go shopping for a refurbished Nintendo handheld at stores and auction houses, but not if we’re looking for a huge bargain: small discounts and dodgy quality often make it wiser to buy new instead. Nintendo has just offered us some better reasons to scrimp and save by quietly offering both the DSi XL and 3DS through its refurb shop. The used (and occasionally bruised) systems respectively start at $100 and $130, or $30 and $40 less than they’d normally cost — enough to justify splurging on a game or two. While the selection is currently scarce, we’ll set that qualm aside when everything gets the same year-long warranty as a new unit. About the only debate left is whether or not we’re looking for a dedicated game machine in the first place.

Nintendo’s digital game sales hit an all-time high

DNP Nintendo digital games sales more than double

Nintendo’s hardware sales may be in a bit of a stupor, but its downloadable games are a different story. During today’s financial results briefing, the company’s president, Satoru Iwata, announced that digital sales for the 2013 fiscal year, which ended in March, cruised past ¥16 billion (around $160.9 million), more than doubling transactions from the last two years. Nintendo’s frontman went on to credit the demand for downloadable game add-ons and the convenience of digital titles as contributing factors in the company’s surge. Iwata also pointed out that most 3DS owners are using their systems online. This includes 87 percent of the handheld’s owners in Japan and 83 percent in the US. While these numbers are impressive, the system’s internet use statistics start to dwindle in Europe, where its user connectivity rate is only 57 percent. The Wii U‘s user base is almost as connected, with 80 percent of the platform’s owners taking the system online The company’s e-commerce may be thriving, but we wouldn’t bet on seeing Nintendo announce a download-only console during its E3 keynote presentation.

Nintendo Won’t Hold An E3 2013 Press Conference To Focus On Smaller, Direct Events

Nintendo Wont Hold An E3 2013 Press Conference To Focus On Smaller, Direct Events

We think it’s safe to say considering how Nintendo’s Wii U has been performing lately, the world will be tuning into their E3 press conference this year in anticipation to hear what exactly they have planned to turn things around for the company. That was probably the plan for many gamers around the world, but it looks like they’ll have to look for their Nintendo information elsewhere as the company has announced they won’t be holding a press conference at this year’s E3.

The news came directly from Nintendo president Satoru Iwata during a financial results briefing earlier today, where he says instead of holding a presentation targeted at an international audience, the company plans to hold smaller events specifically directed to different regions. At this year’s E3, Nintendo will focus specifically on its software lineup for the U.S market as they attempt to introduce a new presentation style for this year’s show. (more…)

Nintendo 3DS Sells 13.95M Globally In 2013 Fiscal Year

Nintendo 3DS Sells 13.95M Globally In 2013 Fiscal Year

It wasn’t all bad news today for Nintendo as earlier today, the company reported its Wii U only sold 390,000 units in its previous quarter. Nintendo’s handheld business is still doing well in comparison, although Nintendo still isn’t completely satisfied with its performance.

Of course, we’re talking about the Nintendo 3DS as the company announced it had sold a total of 13.95 million 3DS units and 49.61 million software units in the last fiscal year globally. Even though those could be considered to be good, Nintendo is still not satisfied with how the handheld is performing outside of Japan. “Although evergreen titles such as New Super Mario Bros. 2 and Paper Mario: Sticker Star, released in this fiscal year, and Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7, released in last fiscal year, became hit titles, they did not generate sufficient sales momentum,” Nintendo said in a statement. Nintendo has another tough year, sells just 390,000 Wii Us in the last quarter

Nintendo has another tough year, sells just 390,000 Wii Us in the last quarter

While there’s no shortage of 3DS iterations headed to the market, Nintendo is having a harder time selling its new Wii U. Profits for the year are also half of its own predictions, despite the fact that Nintendo reduced its rosy estimates in the interim. Net sales are down 1.9 percent over the last year, down to 635 billion yen, but most importantly the company has managed to turn its net income into positive figures, netting 7 billion yen over the last year, compared to a 40 billion yen loss the year before. Following its launch, Wii U sales have slowed substantially, with only 390,000 units sold since December (now totaling 3.45 million), while the 3DS continues to sell in healthier numbers, with Nintendo shifting 1.25 million handhelds in the same period.

Focusing on the next year, the company maintains that it’ll increase net income to 10 billion yen in the next twelve months, with a focus on selling “the compelling nature” of its gaming hardware, as well as pushing its 3DS more in foreign markets. The financial statement adds that the games maker plans to concentrate on “proactively releasing key Nintendo titles” starting the second half of this year “in order to regain momentum.” Those key titles will have to hit hard, as certain competitors‘ new consoles are creeping closer.

In related news, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata is taking on a second role as CEO at Nintendo of America, today’s report states. Current NoA figurehead Reggie Fils-Aime will stay on as COO, overseen directly by Iwata.

Pink Nintendo 3DS XL misses Easter, arrives in the UK later this Spring

Pink Nintendo 3DS XL misses Easter, arrives in the UK later this Spring

If the adorable patterns on the Animal Crossing special edition 3DS XL didn’t tug at your heart (and wallet) strings, perhaps this English rose will. Set to arrive in the UK on May 31st, there’s no software tie-in to mark the occasion, just the vivid hues of an entirely pink handheld. For the international purveyors of all things kawaii, there’s still a pearl-finish pink and white 3DS XL listed on Amazon. Regardless of the shade, both options should pair really well with your vast collection of Hello Kitty tat goods.

How would you change Nintendo’s 3DS XL?

Nintendo 3DS XL review Bigger is better, but not quite enough

The Nintendo 3DS XL improved on the original in a wide variety of ways, including better ergonomics and playability. The chunkier body and bigger screen was key in helping to coax the console out of the shadow of its predecessor, and we were full of praise when we reviewed it. But the experience of living with a device is so different from reviewing it, that we’d like to ask you what, if Nintendo was asking, would you have changed?

Nintendo debuts 3DS image sharing tool in Japan, uploads your screengrabs to Twitter, Tumblr

Nintendo debuts 3DS image sharing tool in Japan, uploads your screengrabs to Twitter, Tumblr

Still waiting for Miiverse to show its hide on Nintendo’s 3DS? Maybe the promise of more conventional social networking will tide you over. Thanks to a new web tool, Japanese 3DS owners can now share screenshots from Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Tomodachi Collection:New Life with their Twitter and Tumblr followers. The setup is pretty simple, giving users access to a basic upload interface through the 3DS’ built-in web browser. Just pick an image, add a caption and watch your retweets roll in. Unfortunately, the tool doesn’t work with just any image — attempting to upload a shot taken with the 3DS camera gave us an error, which told us (via a rough translation) that the picture came from “incompatible software.” The tool is written entirely in Japanese, but folks with a knack for Kanji can check it out at i.nintendo.net. Looking for a compatible game? We hear there’s a bundle for that.
