Lenovo ThinkPad tab revisits FCC packing 3G radio, no LTE

Though it still lacks an official moniker, Lenovo’s so-called Thinkpad tablet (aka the TP00043AEF) is racking up copious frequent flyer miles with yet another journey past the FCC’s prying eyes. This time, the Windows 8 slate is packing WCDMA II and V radios, the 3G bands supported by AT&T in the US and Canada’s Bell Mobility, but with a notable lack of an LTE band. All that rules out Europe as a possible destination for this particular flavor of the tab, meaning it’s likely to end up in Asia or North and South America for mobile data customers who don’t need gobs of hustle. As far as we know, it’s still the same 10.1-inch tablet with a 1,366 x 768 display, some form of Intel Clover Trail CPU and an 8MP camera, but we’ve still no idea as to delivery or price. Hopefully we’ll have more info soon, but meanwhile, if another of the legion Windows 8 tablets out there doesn’t suit you, check the source for all the radiographic minutiae.

Globalgig roaming data service launched: devour up to 5GB abroad for $49 per month

Global Roaming

Voiamo has just taken the veil off of Globalgig, a new roaming service that’ll let road warriors consume up to 5GB through a monthly contract and the purchase of a $119 MiFi dongle. So far, it will only be available if you’re roaming in the US, UK and Australia through the company’s Sprint, O2 and Optus partners, respectively. However, the company has promised it’ll expand to “key Asian, European Union markets, and other large global travel hubs” in the next 12 months, bringing 1GB of data for $25, 3GB for $39 and 5GB for $49 per month. Contracts will run month-to-month, and you’ll be able to cancel anytime with 48 hours notice, according to Voiamo. Sounds like just the thing for globetrotting bloggers, especially with a certain electronics spectacle coming up in the New Year. Check the PR after the break for more info.

Nexus 7 3G back on sale in UK

Google’s Nexus 7 3G is back in stock in the UK, with stocks of the 7-inch tablet finally restored after selling out shortly after the first listing went live. The ASUS-made slate – which is priced at £239 with 32GB of storage and an unlocked HSPA+ modem – currently ships in 3-5 days, according to Google’s Play store, as per the WiFi-only 16GB and 32GB versions.

The most expensive Nexus 7, the HSPA+ model supports pentaband 3G (850, 900, 1700, 1900, 2100 MHz) for use across most of the European 3G networks, and comes without a SIM or data plan. Instead, buyers are left to shop for their own plan of choice, whether that be a cheap pay-as-you-go deal for intermittent use, or a more sizable bundle for heavier users.

While not quite as speedy to sell out as the Nexus 4 smartphone, Google’s limited supplies of the 3G variant of the Nexus 7 didn’t hold up to prolonged interest, and the slate has been unavailable for the past week or so. That’s in no small part because of its affordability: it’s £130 less than the cheapest iPad mini WiFi + Cellular, though Apple’s tablet does support 4G on select networks.

As for the Nexus 4, Google’s smartphone still has no estimated availability date for UK shoppers from the Play store. That leaves either patience or a comparatively expensive carrier deal the only two options.

iPhone FaceTime over cellular for AT&T now available for some, even without LTE?

AT&T’s decision to let only its customers on shared and new data plans pick up FaceTime over cellular may have riled some, but at least it’s been able to roll-out the functionality earlier than the two-month window suggested in early November. MacRumors‘ forums are abuzz with word that their iOS devices (mostly on the East Coast) are now able to make FaceTime calls without WiFi. Perhaps more importantly, according to these early reports, you might not have to wield an LTE iDevice to use it, with several non-4G devices running iOS 6 able to stream faces elsewhere. If you’re still getting the pop-up of misery (seen above), forum users suggesting switching your phone off and on again.

Apple quietly delays some international iPad mini 4G preorders

Delivery times for some preorders of the iPad mini WiFi + Cellular have slipped back into early December, with Apple quietly updating its tracking system from the original “late November” estimate for international buyers. Some shoppers checking their order status today have found that Apple has pushed back the delivery to December 4, even if they placed orders for the 3G/4G-enabled tablet shortly after it went up for sale.

According to SlashGear’s checks with UK orders, the change in shipping estimates appears to have impacted the cheapest WiFi + Cellular model, the 16GB version. That, as per the screenshot above, now lists a December 4 delivery date; however, the same constraints don’t appear to have affected more expensive versions.

A separate order for the 32GB iPad mini WiFi + Cellular – placed at the same time as the 16GB order – shows that it is expected as much as a week earlier than its cheaper counterpart. Apple suggests it will arrive between November 26 (in keeping with the “late November” timescale originally promised) and December 3.

Sales of the iPad mini with 4G kicked off in the US at the end of last week, though demand for the tablet means that new online orders aren’t expected to ship for another two weeks. A similar delay is listed for new international orders.

Update: Looks like the delays could be color dependent, too. Al Sutton‘s order for a 32GB white & silver iPad mini WiFi + Cellular has also been pushed back to December 4:

iPad Mini, 4th generation iPad hit Sprint retail stores in limited quantities, force you to leave your house

Eager to size up Cupertino’s latest tablets on the Now Network? Better call your local retailer — Sprint is now offering the iPad mini and Apple’s 4th generation revision at select brick and mortar locations. Existing smartphone customers who make the trek down to their local mini-mall will be able to add the slates to their account at a discounted rate, scoring a 1GB data plan for $15 per month or 100MB for $10. Sprint will also be enacting a waitlist system for customers who miss out due to the company’s admittedly limited stock, asking customers to purchase a $50 gift card in exchange for a guaranteed device when the next wave of tablets hit stores. Check out the official press release after the break for Sprint’s full announcement.

Update: Looks like Verizon and AT&T have the mini on shelves starting today as well.

Nexus 7 with 3G now shipping

The Nexus 7 is arguably one of the best Android tablets out on the market currently, and for a $200 starting price for 16GB, there’s not a lot to complain about. However, if you’re wanting a Nexus 7 with 3G capabilities and want it unlocked, it’s only $100 more. Plus, it comes in a lone 32GB variant with an AT&T SIM card.

The 3G-enabled tablet is shipping now, and Google says that it’ll take 3-5 business days to reach your front door. The Nexus 7 has a 7-inch 1280×800 HD IPS display (216 ppi) with an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor and 1GB of RAM. It also comes with 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth, and even NFC capabilities.

The Nexus 7 runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out of the box, but it’s upgradeable to Google’s latest Android version, which is 4.2 Jelly Bean. The tablet weighs just 0.75 pounds and is only 10.45mm thick, which might not be as impressive as the iPad‘s thinness, but for a $300 tablet, you still really can’t go wrong.

The 3G version of the Nexus 7 is shipping now, and it costs $299. This will get you the 3G, as well as 32GB of storage, and an AT&T SIM card, but the tablet comes unlocked out of the box and is compatible with GSM, UMTS, and HSPA+ networks. Get it now in the Google Play store while it’s still hot.

T-Mobile USA lights up new HSPA+ and blasts AT&T iPhone speeds

T-Mobile USA has turned on HSPA+ in three new metro areas, claiming that in its tests with an unlocked iPhone 4S, it saw 70-percent faster downloads than on AT&T. The new service – in select parts of Washington D.C, Baltimore, and Houston – joins T-Mobile’s existing iPhone-compatible “4G” 1900MHz provision as the carrier tries to remain relevant in the face of LTE services from rivals.

That brings the total number of new markets to five, with Kansas City and Las Vegas already on the list. T-Mobile says it will be equipping several more metro areas before the end of the year, as it transitions old 2G service on the 1900MHz band over to HSPA+ use.

It’s a long process, though for T-Mobile it could be a valuable one if it can coax over iPhone users in those areas to its all-you-can-eat unlimited plans. Subscribers with Apple devices are known to drive significant monthly per-user revenues for AT&T, Verizon, and other carriers, and that’s a pie T-Mobile would desperately like a piece of.

Of course, step outside of the fledgling 1900MHz coverage, and the speed situation gets a whole lot more miserable. The full list of new areas is as follows:

  • Washington D.C.: Alexandria, VA; Arlington, VA; Chevy Chase, MD; Falls Church, VA; Laurel, MD; McLean, VA; and Silver Spring, MD.
  • Baltimore: Glen Burnie and Towson, MD
  • Houston: Cypress, Jersey Village, Humble, Kingwood, and The Woodlands.
