Sony prices its 2013 home and shelf audio lineups, clarifies availability dates

Sony prices its 2013 home and shelf audio lineups, clarifies availability dates

Given Sony’s heritage, it’s no surprise that the company loves its audio — but we can imagine that some might be overwhelmed when the company has priced and dated the cores of its 2013 home and shelf audio lineups in one sitting. Don’t worry, we’ll break it all down. On the home audio side, both the BDV-N7100W and BDV-7100W home-theaters-in-a-box (N8100W shown above) are already shipping at respective $599 and $699 prices with 1,000W 5.1-channel output, internet-linked Blu-ray players and both Bluetooth as well as OneTouch NFC pairing. TV watchers who can wait until June will also see the STR-DN1040, a $599 7.2-channel receiver with 4K upscaling, Bluetooth, WiFi and 165W per channel; the $449 STR-DN840 receiver, which scales back to 4K passthrough and 150W per channel; and the $399 HT-C660 soundbar, which adds NFC pairing to the same wireless mix as the receivers.

Shelf audio is simpler, with every new entry arriving May 27th. Both the LBT-GPX55 (below) and LBT-GPX77 mini stereos offer a respective 1,600W and 1,800W of output alongside Bluetooth, NFC, a CD player (!) and dual USB ports at a $499 starting price. Those who don’t need their walls rattled quite so thoroughly can spring for the $349 RDH-GTK37iP boombox, which puts out a still-substantial 420W on top of Bluetooth, NFC, an iOS dock and attention-getting strobe lights. That’s a lot to process, we know. If you’re not satisfied even after that deluge of information, however, Sony’s pressers await after the break.

AMD details $999 Radeon HD 7990 graphics card, says it handles all top games at 4K

AMD details Radeon HD 7990 any game at 4K resolution for $999

We’ve seen plenty of the Radeon HD 7990 in action with Battlefield 4, but it’s taken AMD a little while to furnish us with full specs and pricing for its in-house reference design. Now that all the info is here, in the run-up to commercial availability in two week’s time, it’s finally possible to judge the pros and cons of what is arguably a very niche product. Read on past the break and we’ll do just that.

Harman Kardon ships AVR 2700 and 3700 receivers with 4K scaling and AirPlay

Harman Kardon AVR 2700 and 3700 receivers tout both 4K scaling and AirPlay

Now that Ultra HD TVs are poised to hit the market in force, it’s more important than ever to have receivers that can handle them — even if our bank accounts often can’t. Harman Kardon knows this well enough to ship its AVR 2700 and AVR 3700 receivers, both of which carry 4K passthrough and upscaling on their eight HDMI ports as a matter of course. The two also support AirPlay streaming alongside more commonplace DLNA media sharing and offer remote control mobile apps. Home theater futureproofers mostly have to decide on audio channels and network support before they buy: the $800 AVR 2700 produces 7.1-channel surround and sticks to Ethernet alone for networking, while the $996 AVR 3700 introduces 7.2-channel audio and WiFi. Few of us will use either receiver to its full potential right now, but well-heeled 4K TV owners (or just the well-prepared) can pick one up today.

Apple Not Releasing Anything ‘New’ In 2013 [Economist]

Apple Not Releasing Anything New In 2013 [Economist]

Like all days, Apple has been in the news today as well, though primarily because its shares have reached their lowest point since 2011 and that iPad mini shipments are expected to plunge by 30%. Now Haydn Shaughnessy of Forbes is reporting that the company won’t exactly been releasing anything ‘new’ this year. He believes that entirely ‘new’ revolutionary products such as Macbook Air, iPad and iPhone were back when they were first announced, can’t be expected from the company. Rumored revolutionary products such as the iTV and iWatch, according to him, won’t be released this year. He cites this as the reason why there are more iPhone 5S rumors these days as opposed to rumors about these devices.

Seiki 50-Inch 4K TV Eyes-On: How the Hell Is a TV This Beautiful So Cheap?

Yesterday, Chinese OEM Seiki officially priced its 50-inch Ultra HD TV at $1500, making it the cheapest 4K television in the history of absurd resolution. It’s cheaper even than the last round of super-cheap Chinese 4Ks we saw. The price is so low, in fact, and the brand name is so unfamiliar, that you have to wonder if this television was a joke—or worse—a piece of garbage. I’m one of the first people in America to see this mythical creature, and I’ll tell you right now: I can’t believe my eyes. More »

Seiki officially prices its 50-inch 4K TV at $1,500 with a late April launch

Seiki 50-inch 4K set

When Seiki’s 4K TV set popped up on retail listings with a price that’s just a fraction of what we’ve seen from its more expensive rivals, we were almost convinced it was a site glitch — that couldn’t be real, could it? The company would like to reassure us that it’s quite serious. The 50-inch Ultra HD set is officially shipping to the US later in April, and it will still carry that regular $1,500 price tag when sales expand from TigerDirect (which claims to have stock today) to include Amazon and QVC, among others. We’d remain cautious about leaping in when Seiki is trying to skip a year or three of the usual commoditization process, but those who insist on their 4K bragging rights won’t have long to wait before they can start boasting.
