Sony’s 4K Handycam and HXR-IFR5 4K Interface Unit prototypes eyes-on

No question, today’s Sony press conference was all about the 4K. TVs, media services and even 4K recording for consumers. The latter arrived in the form of a couple of prototypes. First off was the generically labelled 4K Consumer Camcorder, a prototype device that was hanging out in a glass case at the Sony booth after the event concluded — though there was a Handycam logo on the side of the device. It’s not a bad looking handheld — about a standard size for a prosumer model, with a viewfinder, mic and handle at the top. As for specs? No such luck at this early stage.

Directly to the right of the camcorder was another glass-encased device, the HXR-IFR5 Interface Unit, which scales video shot with an existing camcorder like the NEX-FS700 up to 4K. The RAW video files show up in 4096 x 2160 resolution. As with the camcorder, details are scarce at the moment.

Eyes-on Sony’s 56-inch OLED Ultra HDTV

Eyeson Sony's 56inch OLED Ultra HDTV

If you’ve ever seen an OLED TV, you’d you’d remember it. Same can be said about 4k. Combine the two together and you truly have a sight to see — which is exactly what Sony has done. Of course it is very difficult to judge picture quality when a TV is on a stage vs in your living room. That doesn’t mean we aren’t impressed and it doesn’t mean we won’t be looking forward to the day we can see our favorite content on it in the comfort of our own home — assuming of course, that one is affordable in our lifetime.

Sony announces 55-inch and 65-inch X9000A 4K LED TVs

Sony has announced that it will roll out 55-inch and 65-inch X9000A 4k LED TVs this year, in addition to three non-4k Bravia lines: the W900A, W802A, and W650A. The X9000A has an outstanding 3,840 x 2,160 resolution, and boasts a wide range of features, including Color IQ technology, Motionflow XR, S-FORCE Front Surround audio, and Sense of Quartz.

65X900

The X9000A utilizes the 4K X-Reality PRO processing engine, upcaling content to four times full HD resolution. The processing engine enables the incredible image quality by matching pixels against its database source while analzing, refining, and cleaning up videos. Color quality is high due to the TRILUMINOS Display, which displays a wider array of colors than you get with a standard HDTV, including various hard-to-reproduce hues.

Audio is handled via Sony’s Signal-to-Sound architecture, which, according to the announcement, “makes every moment real – from the roar of a packed stadium to the quietest whisper.” Like the video, audio is refined and optimized for the highest quality possible. The TVs have S-FORCE Front Surround and Magnetic Fluid Speakers, which are very energy efficient, reducing energy usage up to 35-percent. The X9000A can be controlled using an NFC-compatible Xperia smartphone via the One-touch Remote.

To ensure that the picture is always as clear as possible even when objects are zooming around, the X9000A features Motionflow XR 800Hz, which fills the gap between frames with transitional images, delivering up to four times the number of images as a TV without the technology. Because the X9000A is an LED TV, the Motionflox XR will provide an LED boost to intensify lighting when needed, while darkening will take place as well when called for.

The X9000A 55-inch and 65-inch will be launched in Europe in July.

Sony to launch 4K digital distribution network this summer, ‘mastered in 4K’ Blu-ray discs

Sony to launch 4K digital distribution network this summer, 'mastered in 4K' Bluray discs

Now that Sony is bringing 4K TVs to more mainstream sizes with the launch of 55- and 65-inch models later this year, it’s also expanding the availability of content. When it launched its $25,000 84-inch Ultra HD LCD last year it loaned owners a hard drive solution that came preloaded with movies, but now buyers will be able to download native 4K movies as well. According to CEO Kaz Hirai “4K is not the future…it’s now” and Sony is doing it’s best to make that happen.

Also arriving on shelves are a series of “mastered in 4K” Blu-ray discs, which it promises are sourced in 1080p from their original 4K masters in high bitrate to look their best when upscaled back to 4K. The first movies up for the treatment are The Amazing Spider-Man, The Karate Kid, Taxi Driver and The Other Guys. If you’ve been wondering where high res content will come from then check the press release after the break, we’ll get more details when they’re available.

Sony 56-Inch 4K OLED TV Hands-On: So Bright, So Beautiful, So Far From Existing (Updated)

Sony is showing off an organic light-emitting wet dream in 8 million pixels. Why can’t a 4K OLED TV exist today? Now that I’ve seen the future as a 56-inch prototype, I’m sad I have to wait until tomorrow to see it again. All televisions should be this incredible. More »

Sony announces the world’s first 4K OLED TV at CES: 3,840 x 2,160 resolution, no price or release in sight

Sony announces the world's first 4K OLED TV at CES 3,840 x 2,160 resolution, no price or release in sight

4K TVs look amazing. OLED TVs look amazing. You can imagine, therefore, how good a 4K OLED TV will look. Sony has just wowed the audience here at CES 2013 with the news that it’s produced the world’s first Ultra High Definition television that uses Organic LEDs. Given how many companies have launched 4K sets here — Westinghouse, Hisense, Toshiba and LG, just to name a few — it’s not unusual to hear that Sony has one-upped the crowd by adding a pinch of OLED to the mix.

The 56-inch set boasts a native 3,840 x 2,160 OLED panel, and a prototype will be on display here at CES 2013 in Las Vegas. Sony’s pimping its own “oxide semiconductor TFTs” and “Super Top Emission” technologies, but isn’t saying much else. There’s zero mention of contrast ratio, refresh ratio, thickness, power draw, or any other specifications. Not exactly a shocker, but disheartening nonetheless. We’ll be prying for more — including any plans for a commercial release — as the show rolls on.

Sony announces 65-and 55-inch Ultra HD TVs at CES: arriving this spring, pricing a mystery

Sony announces a 65 and 55inch 4K TV at CES

We wouldn’t blame you if you cried tears of agony when you realized that you could afford neither the $25,000 nor the space in your home to accommodate Sony’s 84-inch 4K Ultra HD TV. Fortunately for you, the company is announcing 65 and 55-inch versions that’ll occupy less room in your home while still pumping out 4K images. Both offer a Triluminous display with the company’s X-Reality PRO and Motionflow XR960 technology, WiFi and NFC one-touch screen mirroring. At the same time, the company’s launching a range of “Mastered in 4K” Blu-ray discs, but sadly the constraints of the format mean the discs will only output footage at 1080p (but then it’ll be upscaled back to 4K). The pair will arrive in the spring, but the company doesn’t want to talk pricing beyond intimating that you won’t need to calculate the fee in the number of sedan cars you could buy instead.
