JVC reveals e-Shift2 4K scaling projectors, promises true 4K LCDs for under $20k

JVC reveals eShift2 4K scaling projectors, promises true 4K LCDs for under $20k

At CEDIA 2012 JVC showed off its 2012 line of home theater projectors, most which feature its e-Shift2 technology, a new version of the “4K precision” upconversion it introduced last year. While they are not capable of accepting a 4K source (not that you have any 4K Blu-ray discs lying around anyway), they work by creating two 1080p frames from the HD source, shifting one down and to the right. e-Shift2 promises higher native contrast and improved processing over its predecessor thanks to a new polarizing wire grid engine and updated algorithms. All of the new projectors are 3D capable with RF-connected active shutter glasses, and there’s a new smartphone app available for controlling settings without interrupting viewing. Of course, a 130,000:1 native contrast ratio doesn’t come cheap and the top of the line DLA-X95R/DLA-RS66 models sporting the spec have a pricetag of $11,999. Of course, if you’re looking for the 4K upscaling for a (relative) bargain, the DLA-X55R/DLA-RS48 can be had for just a hair under $5,000.

That’s not all JVC had to display however, as it also brought along one “early pre-production model” of an 84-inch UHDTV it plans to release in the first quarter of 2013. Like its projectors, it will come in both home theater and professional trim branded the RS-840UD and PS-840UD. It may be a price beater as well since JVC is targeting a sub-$20k price tag for both models, which would be well shy of the $25k set Sony just announced. Unlike some of the other 4K screens we’ve seen it does not include any 3D support, which may be a part of the lower cost. We got a quick peek at the display and the picture looked as sharp and punchy as we’ve come to expect, and even had less glare than other displays we’ve seen. Check out all of the prices and specs after the break, and bring your wallet.

LG’s 84-inch 4K ultra high definition TV goes on sale in the US next month for $19,999

LG's 84inch 4K ultra high definition TV goes on sale this month in the US for $19,999

LG said it would release its 84-inch 4K (3,840 x 2,160, or four times the resolution of your current HDTV) UHDTV outside Korea this month and the company confirmed shipments would be on the way during an event at CEDIA 2012 before also announcing an MSRP of $19,999. According to LG the first units will begin shipping this month, with limited availability through the usual high-end sources slated for October. Just as we’d heard, the 84LM9600 includes LG’s passive glasses Cinema 3D technology plus all the Smart TV, WiDi, dual-core L9 processor, 2.2 channel speakers and Magic Remote bells and whistles it can muster.

Of course, even $20k currently doesn’t buy a large selection of publicly available 4K content, although LG was displaying the unit with standard 1080p content to demonstrate its “Resolution Upscaler Plus” capabilities. The 1080p video we watched was sharp and clear on the big LED backlit set, although there was a bit of glare from the lights in the room — not atypical for demo setups that aren’t exactly like most living rooms. In just a few weeks well-heeled consumers will be able to choose between this and the slightly pricier Sony 84-inch 4K TV, with more competition on the way soon. Also an option: a decently equipped 2013 Ford Focus. Check the press release after the break for all the details, we’ll be checking Mark Cuban’s couch cushions for spare change.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: September 5, 2012

We’re getting ready to wrap-up coverage for this Wednesday, and what a day we had. First up we had Nokia’s highly-anticipated Windows Phone 8 event, where it revealed both the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820. There was a lot to take in during the event, and you can find everything you need to know in our Nokia wrap-up. It’s there that you can check out product announcements and hands-on posts with Nokia’s new devices, so be sure to give it a look.

After we had finished up with Nokia’s event, it was straight over to Gotham Hall, where Motorola and Google held an event of their own. Google’s Eric Schmidt took the stage first to boast the latest Android numbers, before Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside hopped up on stage to outline the company’s plan for the “The New Motorola.” After that, it was all about the reveals. Motorola revealed three new phones in total: the long-rumored DROID RAZR HD and the DROID RAZR M, which has had its share of rumors as well, along with the surprise announcement of the DROID RAZR MAXX HD. If you were waiting for Motorola’s new devices, you’ll be pleased to know that we have a couple of hands-on posts that cover all three devices.

Woodside also said today that any Motorola phones from 2012 that don’t get updated to Jelly Bean by the end of the year will be a eligible for a $100 voucher, and it was announced that the developer editions of the DROID RAZR M and the RAZR HD will come with unlockable bootloaders. A little bit later on in the day, we found out that the PureView ad Nokia showed during its presentation may be a little bit misleading, and even though there was a ton of Nokia and Motorola news today, there was still time for a new iPhone leak, this time giving us an up-close look at the battery. Windows Phone 8 will be getting screenshot support, and today the EC approved a mobile wallet team up between three European carriers, much to Google’s chagrin.

Sony is putting its massive 84-inch 4K TV up for pre-order tomorrow, T-Mobile has rolled out unlimited 4G data across the country, and Getac has revealed its new Z710 Android tablet, which looks to be capable of taking a few hits. Pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy Note II have opened in the UK, where the new device has an expected mid-October ship date, and Ubisoft has announced that it will stop implementing always-on DRM in its PC games. Valve has been forced to impose a submission fee for those looking to list something on Steam Greenlight, Epson has unveiled a pair of home projectors, and finally tonight, NASA scientists today delayed the second engine firing of the Juno spacecraft, which will be headed for Jupiter before long.

That’s all for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up! Remember to check in with us tomorrow, as we’ll be at Amazon’s press event, where it’s expected to reveal a couple of new devices in the Kindle line!

Sony 84-inch 4K Bravia 84X900 TV available for pre-order starting tomorrow

Are you about to inherit a small fortune and have need of a much larger TV than the one you have now? You’re in luck, because Sony will be opening up pre-orders for its massive 4K Bravia 84X900 TV tomorrow. The set was introduced at IFA 2012 last week, and we got to spend some hands-on time in the shadow of its ridiculously large 84-inch screen.

Complete with an 84-inch 4K LCD edge-lit panel and a 10-unit integrated speaker system, Sony claims that this TV “provides the most immersive picture and sound experience ever available for the home theater.” It certainly looks amazing, and it’s bound to impress all of your friends, but if you want one, you’re going to shell out some major cash. Sony has stuck this TV set with a price tag of $25,000, so only those with some serious cash to throw around need apply.

Even though the set is going up for pre-order tomorrow, it still doesn’t have a solid release date. Sony says that it will be launching sometime in November, but doesn’t get any more specific than that. It looks like there are more details we’ll be left waiting for, so just know that if you pre-order one tomorrow, it’ll be a couple of months before it actually arrives.

Lately we’ve been seeing all sorts of companies jumping into the 4K scene. Some offer 4K televisions that are quite a bit smaller than Sony’s is, but LG has an 84-inch 4K TV of its own currently available in South Korea. Of course, the problem at the moment is that there’s a lack of 4K content to watch on your very expensive TV, so if you decide to buy one, it’ll probably be some time before you can take full advantage of your set. Is anyone out there planning to pick up one of these bad boys?

Sony's 84-inch 4K Bravia KD-84X900 goes up for pre-order tomorrow for $25,000

That stunning and gigantic Bravia that Sony unveiled at IFA, well, we finally have pricing and availability for this potential TV king. The 84-inch Bravia XBR-84X900 (aka the KD-84X9005) will go up for pre-order tomorrow, September 6th, for the jaw-dropping price of $25,000 (let us know when you’ve stopped hyperventilating). The edge-lit panel wont’ be delivering full HD passive 3D entertainment to living rooms until later this fall, however. While orders can be placed less than 24 hours from now, shipments will have to wait until some undetermined day in November. Well, at least that should give you a few months head start on paying this monstrosity off… before the repo men eventually show up to take it off your hands.

Sony 84-inch 4K LCD TV to kickstart global launch at the end of this year

Sony is first off the blocks by rolling out the industry’s largest 84″ class TV sometime at the end of this year, delivering high-resolution large screen picture and action that will be accompanied by high-quality powerful sound in order to deliver an immersive experience for viewers, letting you enjoy TV in a totally new way – I myself personally think that a large screen TV offers by far and large a more immersive experience compared to that of a 3D TV. What do you think? Let us check out what else the 84-inch TV is able to deliver right out of the box, right after the jump, shall we not?

To put it in a nutshell, the spanking new Sony Bravia will boast of a 4K (3840 x 2160) LCD panel, offering four times the resolution of current Full High Definition TVs that are in the market. This new TV will incorporate Sony’s 4K X-Reality PRO super-resolution high picture quality engine in order to get the job done, where this particularly formidable combination is able to seamlessly deliver high-resolution large-screen picture with high-quality powerful sound without missing a beat. I guess this is one TV that I will have to experience an eyes-on in order to fully grasp what I am writing about here.

About the 4K LCD panel? Well, it comprises, of approximately 8.29-megapixels, which is 4 times the resolution of Full HD standard as mentioned earlier, allowing you to reproduce a range of content with different resolutions, ranging from HD digital broadcasts to content from Blu-ray discs. Viewers need not worry about the pixels, while letting you notice images which are breathtakingly realistic and beautifully clear, courtesy of its wide 60-degree viewing angle, never mind if you sit as much as half the distance to the display – when you compare it to viewing something at Full HD resolution.

You know for sure that this is going to be one expensive TV to own, where we are most probably looking at a price tag which is easily capable of purchasing a nice family sedan with some spare change left over to boot.

Sony XBR-84X900 4K LED TV eyes-on: Amazing

If you are a TV enthusiast, you have undoubtedly heard of the new Sony XBR-84X900 LED TV. If you haven’t, this new television from Sony was just announced at IFA and we’ve covered the launch as it was announced. It has a 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution, which is exactly four times as many pixels as today’s 1080p standard.

Tradeshows are not always a great place to look at these TVs since the lighting is so over-the-top, if not outright weird. So instead, we headed for the Sony Store in Palo Alto, where we where the Sony XBR-84X900 is currently on display. Phil Molyneux, Sony Electronics USA’s COO was very proud to show us the capabilities of this TV set. Here’s a photo of him next to the television so that you can have a sense for how big 84″ is. Sony 84-inch 4K Bravia 84X900 TV hands-on

Who needs windows at home, when you can have an 84-inch TV running at 3,840 x 2,160 resolution on the wall instead. Sony’s new 4K Bravia 84X900 is a masterpiece of overkill (though we wouldn’t object if Sony sent us one for “long term loan”) but, as overkill goes, it’s one that heralds the next phase in super-high-definition home entertainment. We stood in awe of the pixel-packing behemoth at IFA; read on for our first impressions.

Vast. Bright. Incredible. It’s easy to be broken down to just a few stuttering words when you’re in front of the 84X900: 4K is one of those technologies that proves truly jaw-dropping when you first see it. 1080p suddenly looks clunky and jagged in comparison; you have to get right up close to the Bravia’s panel before you see the individual pixels.

It’s not just the individual detail, though; it’s the smoothness. Sony was showing a looping clip of a young girl surrounded by landscapes and floating water bubbles, and there was no smudging or blurring, just incredibly life-like movement.

It’s not a small TV, in terms of thickness, but we’ve a feeling most people won’t object to that if they can afford the 84X900. Exactly how much that will require is unclear; Sony says the new set will begin shipping from September, though hasn’t given a final sticker price yet.
