Toshiba 84-inch 4K Quad Full HD TV hands-on (video)

Toshiba 84inch 4K Quad Full HD TV handson video

84 seems to be the magic number at IFA. 84 inches, that is, when it comes to 4K TVs. Sony announced its jumbo 4K set at yesterday’s press conference, and now Toshiba has returned with a matching high-res model of its own. The Toshiba set has a slightly sleeker housing, aided by the fact that it didn’t have side-mounted speakers as with Sony’s flavor — though, if you’re able to afford a (yet-unpriced) TV of this caliber, a premium surround-sound rig better be on the agenda as well. The picture quality, as you might expect, was fantastic. You’ll see individual pixels once you’re within a few feet of the display, but given its 84-inch footprint, you’re going to want to position yourself quite a distance from the panel in order to take it all in.

Toshiba had three sets on display, running through loops of game play, cityscapes and some decked-out human models. The ambient setting was favorably configured, and with ideal content colors were vibrant and the picture was incredibly bright and sharp during our demo, even when viewed from a slight angle. There was a hint of reflection, but only when a dark image popped into frame, despite a multitude of visual noise in the area. You’ll need to see Toshiba’s 84-inch, 3,840 x 2,160-pixel TV in person to get the full effect (perhaps after it launches early next year), though you can take a (low-res) peek in our gallery below and the video after the break. You can also get a feel for the size — keep an eye out for the Galaxy Note in the bottom left corner in the shot above.

Sony launches STR-DA5800ES home cinema AV receiver: true 4K output, 9.2 surround sound

DNP STRDA5800ES home cinema

Sony’s just launched a high-end home cinema receiver that’s finally good enough to pair up with its IFA-fresh Bravia KD-84X9005 TV or existing VPL-VW1000ES 4K projector. On top of native 4K for supported displays, the receiver will upscale standard HD movies, promising greater color, contrast and detail. For audiophiles, the system has 9.2 channels of surround sound for so-called Front High and Surround Back speakers, on top of the standard 5.1 speaker setup. A feature called “Movie Height” enables the sound to be virtually adjusted up or down to better match the screen position, and acoustics can be selected to match famous concert halls like those in Vienna or Berlin. Finally, you can take advantage of all that Hi-Fi and display tech by streaming from your laptop, smartphone or tablet through a LAN hub on the receiver. There’s no availability or pricing yet, but if you’re not too concerned about that money stuff, check the PR for the rest of the story.

Sony’s 84-inch 4K Bravia KD-84X9005 hits the IFA show floor, we go eyes-on

As ever, Sony’s IFA press conference was a veritable storm of products, but CEO Kaz Hirai was clearly the most excited about the company’s new 84-inch 4K TV, the Bravia KD-84X9005, and after beholding the thing for a bit alongside a scrum of fellow tech journalists in Sony’s booth at IFA, it’s pretty clear why. The thing is beautiful — and yeah, we can confirm, as Kaz suggested, that you really do want to stick out your hand and touch the picture when you’re standing in front of it, particularly, when the video cycles through images of the ocean, with water droplets hitting the screen.

At 84 inches, this thing is a beast, with at least a dozen or so folks standing comfortably around it to catch a glimpse of the display. The Bravia is surprisingly thin for such a beast. There are speaker bars attached to either side of the display, with a control panel along the bottom. The stand consists of two metal bars holding up what’s surely a weighty set. Check out our eyes-on video after the break.

LG launches ridiculously big ultra-definition television

Never wasting an opportunity to get a leg up on the competition, LG has launched a brand new ultra-definition television. The massive 4K HDTV comes it at at 84-inches, which means it isn’t the biggest television we’ve seen, but it is the biggest set capable of 4k technology. LG says that this television offers a whopping 8 million pixels per frame, which delivers “four times the resolution (3840×2160) of existing Full HD TV panels.”

That’s quite a boost to resolution, but if you want one, you better be ready to hand over some serious cash, because this ultra-definition television comes in at $22,000. At that price, LG is going to have a difficult time netting a significant number of buyers. The television has already launched in South Korea, and it’s scheduled to release in other regions next month.

Obviously, the idea behind this launch isn’t to get one in every living room around the world, but rather for LG to get a foot in early on. While 4K HDTVs are ridiculously expensive at the moment, as their price comes down throughout the next decade or so, the market will begin to adopt 4K HDTVs as the new standard. Analyst Daniel Simmons from IHS Screen Digest tells BBC that this is another “evolutionary step” in televisions, and that 4K HDTVs, as expensive as they are, offer users “cinema-quality resolution in the home.”

It may not be the inclusion of 4K that moves televisions like this one however, as Simmons suggests that it’s may actually be a bigger screen that gets consumers to upgrade. This television certainly has a big screen, but it isn’t the first 4K HDTV we’ve seen. Other companies like Toshiba and Panasonic offer 4K HDTVs (although their televisions are quite a bit smaller than LG’s), and some others like Samsung are working on bringing one to market. LG will be bringing this new ultra-definition TV with it to IFA at the end of the month, so we’ll probably be hearing more about it then. Stay tuned.
