April 2013 Canon 5D Mark III Firmware Update Released

The Canon 5D Mark III went on sale in the U.S. back in March, 2012. Later that year in October, Canon detailed what software improvements it will be rolling out in April 2013. On the very last day of April, Canon has fulfilled its promise and has released a new firmware update for the high-end DSLR. The update will definitely welcomed by those who use their Canon 5D Mark III to output HDMI feeds. The extra information that was displyed in Live View has been done away with, for actual recording purposes this used to be quite a nuisance, in this version 1.2.1 firmware update. Uncompressed YCbCr 4:2:2, 8 bit video can be recorded to an external recorder or displayed during filming on an external monitor.

The update also brings a number of other tweaks as well. Canon says that photographers will now be able to use EF 600 f/4 lens as well as a 2x extender with spot on autofocus performance after the firmware update. The center point at f/8 can now by used by AF system, one can hear the cheers of photographers who use extenders and telephoto lenses for photography that requires accurate performance. The free firmware update for Canon 5D Mark III is available for download now via the manufacturer’s website.

Canon 5D Mark III 2013 update paves the way for high-end HDMI video

It was a fair number of years ago that digital cameras were able to record video as well, and this particular feature first appeared on consumer class digital cameras before making their way towards the high end DSLRs. Of course, over the course of time, it made perfect sense for video recording quality to improve, and with the latest upcoming firmware update that is coming next year for the Canon 5D Mark III, videographers will be able to rely on said DSLR to record uncompressed HDMI video, now how about that?

Professionals who have been hankering after better quality images and videos will definitely find the April 2013 (that is when it is scheduled, anyway) update to be one worth looking forward to. Canon shared about this update, “When shooting video, HDMI Output makes possible the recording of high-definition uncompressed video data (YCbCr 4:2:2, 8 bit) from the EOS 5D Mark III to an external recorder via the camera’s HDMI terminal. This, in turn, facilitates the editing of video data with minimal image degradation for greater on-site workflow efficiency during motion picture and video productions. Additionally, video being captured can be displayed on an external monitor, enabling real-time, on-site monitoring of high-definition video during shooting.”

This firmware update would also mean the Canon 5D Mark III will be competitive with Nikon’s D4 and D800 SLRs, as all three will be able to output uncompressed 4:2:2 video via HDMI.

Canon's upcoming 5D Mark III firmware update brings uncompressed HDMI output support, enhanced AF functionality

Proud owners of that sleek and relatively powerful Mark III will be happy to know Canon has just announced a firmware update for its flagship 5D model. The Japanese camera maker is touting this upcoming release as one that will bring clean HDMI-out support to the EOS shooter, which should be great for folks who would like to monitor their recordings in real time. Additionally, Canon’s improved the Mark III’s AF functionalities yet again; this time out by enabling the unit’s auto focus system to adequately adjust to the type of lens that it is paired with. Unfortunately, it looks like users will have to wait a little while to install the new firmware, as the company won’t be making it available until April of next year — at which point it can be grabbed from the soon-to-be bookmarked source link below.
