Square Enix will be releasing floor mats featuring graphics from the 8-bit Dragon Quest games. The mats are made of acrylic fiber and will come in three variants: journey – i.e. a portal – staircase and poison swamp. Yes kids, this is how swamps looked like back then.

This 8-bit game movie remake of Inception is great, as usual

As usual, every single time I see one of these movie remakes as an 8-bit retro game I feel the nostalgia of playing something that I never played. Their version of Inception is, once again, impeccable. I wish these people made games instead of just videos.

Art is hard. It’s hard to make decisions about what will look good where. It’s hard to save up enough money to buy really good art. And it’s really hard to find the time to actually hang it on your wall once you do make a purchase.

8Bit Harmonica: The Tunes They Are a-Changin’

A few years ago we featured a harmonica crammed into a NES cartridge. YouTuber basami sentaku’s harmonica not only has a Famicom cartridge case, it produces 8-bit sound with the help of a sound chip from a NES. It also has a mode that plays the coin sound effect from Super Mario Bros. when you blow into it.

Watch basami sentaku and his friends play some chiptunes on the harmonica:

I’d love to hear non-video game music played on that. Basami sentaku-san, I’m sure you’d make a lot of chiptune fans happy if you started selling 8bit harmonicas.

Legendary 8-Bit Treasure Chest: Item Get!

If you think the life-sized treasure chest is too big or expensive, check out ThinkGeek’s tiny version. It measures just 4″ wide, 4.5″ tall and 3″ deep. But what it lacks in size it makes up for in fanfare. It lights up and emits a chiptune tone when opened.

Portable NES Inspired by NES Controller: Game Boy Macro

A couple of years ago we featured the HandyNES, the portable NES console by Sharon Smith aka lovablechevy. Earlier this year she got her first commission, and it was for another HandyNES. But her client had a great idea: to make the handheld look like the NES controller. Behold!

This unit is very similar to the original HandyNES. It’s also based on an actual NES motherboard, has a top-loading cartridge slot, a 3.5″ LCD screen, a 1500mAh battery that should last about 3 hours and is one of the smallest portable NES mods around. This time though the buttons and d-pad are from a NES controller, and it doesn’t have a USB port for a second NES controller.

Sharon shows off the new HandyNES in the video below, demonstrating features such as its A/V-out and low battery indicator.

If you’re interested in asking Sharon to make you a HandyNES, just contact her on her YouTube channel or on her Facebook page. She says she charges $550 (USD) for the basic unit. Check out Sharon’s thread on the Made by Bacteria forum for more on her mod.

The Nebula of NES Games by Pop Chart Lab: Super Nintendo Galaxy 8

Chart specialists – chartists? chartologists? – Pop Chart Lab crammed all 709 officially released games for the NES in one print. The spiral chart has 8 arms, each representing a different genre – platformer, RPG, fighter etc. – although they also classified some games under “multi-genre.”

The games are arranged chronologically, with over 100 tiny illustrations for the 8-bit console’s notable games such as Super Mario Bros., Mega Man and the infamous Battletoads.  The print measures 24″ x 36″ so I don’t think it will be hard to read or recognize what’s on it. Here’s a closer look at the print:

Pop Chart Lab is selling The Nebula of NES Games print for $32 to $147 (USD) depending on the finishing option. You can order just the print, have it framed, mounted on a panel or installed with hanging rails.
