Square Enix will be releasing floor mats featuring graphics from the 8-bit Dragon Quest games. The mats are made of acrylic fiber and will come in three variants: journey – i.e. a portal – staircase and poison swamp. Yes kids, this is how swamps looked like back then.

Each mat measures 500mm x 500mm (approx. 20″ x 20″) and has a non-slip bottom.

Each mat will also come with a redeemable code for Dragon Quest X players to adorn their houses with a virtual equivalent of their purchased mat.

Give your browser a puff puff and head to JBOX or AmiAmi to order the floor mats. JOBX sells them for $23 each while AmiAmi has them for ¥1,310 (~$13 USD).

As usual, every single time I see one of these movie remakes as an 8-bit retro game I feel the nostalgia of playing something that I never played. Their version of Inception is, once again, impeccable. I wish these people made games instead of just videos.

Make every wound and boo-boo an 8-bit adventure with these fun video game bandages. Putting a bandage on your ouchie will get you a 1up now. You have to bleed for that extra life sometimes.

A few years ago we featured a harmonica crammed into a NES cartridge. YouTuber basami sentaku’s harmonica not only has a Famicom cartridge case, it produces 8-bit sound with the help of a sound chip from a NES. It also has a mode that plays the coin sound effect from Super Mario Bros. when you blow into it.

I’d love to hear non-video game music played on that. Basami sentaku-san, I’m sure you’d make a lot of chiptune fans happy if you started selling 8bit harmonicas.

A couple of years ago we featured the HandyNES, the portable NES console by Sharon Smith aka lovablechevy. Earlier this year she got her first commission, and it was for another HandyNES. But her client had a great idea: to make the handheld look like the NES controller. Behold!

This unit is very similar to the original HandyNES. It’s also based on an actual NES motherboard, has a top-loading cartridge slot, a 3.5″ LCD screen, a 1500mAh battery that should last about 3 hours and is one of the smallest portable NES mods around. This time though the buttons and d-pad are from a NES controller, and it doesn’t have a USB port for a second NES controller.

Sharon shows off the new HandyNES in the video below, demonstrating features such as its A/V-out and low battery indicator.
