It’s a sad fact of our digital lives that no matter how stylish we make our daily-used devices, we’ll still need some antenna-riddled ogre in the corner of the room to blast out the WiFi goodness. Enter TRENDnet‘s latest contender, the TEW-690AP (even its name betrays an absolute lack of charisma), which has three spatial streams per antenna to deliver a max theoretical throughput of 450Mbps. It goes up to a full gigabit should you find any reason to connect via its wired Ethernet port, while a few extra bells and whistles — like a repeater mode, WiFi Protected Setup with compatible devices, and up to four unique, encrypted SSIDs per wireless band — complete the $200 value proposition. Whether you say yay or nay, look out for more from these guys at CES, they’re promising to announce some more “first to market” wireless innovations.

Still holding tight to the “Sharing is Caring!” mantra? Not afraid in the least of handing out a few kilobytes to lost tourists down below? If so, you’re a prime candidate to own a Fon router; for those unaware, Fon’s goal is to equip the world with its 802.11n routers, and then distribute WiFi through them for all to enjoy. The device creates two WiFi signals (SSIDs), one private and one public, and for anyone who knows the pain of being desperate for just a single open hotspot, it’s a product (and mission) worth supporting. The Fonera SIMPL was introduced way back at Mobile World Congress, and while the company said it had an order for 400,000 then, that figure has risen rather significantly since. Today, it’s revealing that two million of these guys have been sold to telecommunication companies around the globe, with British Telecom, MTS-Comstar Russia, SFR France, SoftBank Japan and ZON Cable Portugal named in particular. The general idea is to provide these to customers in order to lighten the overall load for everyone else, but those looking to buy in sans help can finally do so — the SIMPL’s going for $49 / €39 right now directly through the outfit’s website and we’re confident that you’ll do the right thing.

The first time Nokia’s N8-00 popped up on our radar was way back in early February of this year. On that chilly, misty morning, we learned of a mythical being capable of shooting 12 megapixel stills, recording 720p video, outputting via HDMI, and — most importantly — ushering in the promised Symbian^3 touch revolution. It’s been a long road of leaks, teasers, hands-ons, and previews since then, but at long last, the legend of the N8 has become a purchasable commodity. All the early specs have survived, including the 3.5-inch AMOLED display, but the key question today, as it was at the beginning, relates to that all-new software within: does Symbian^3 succeed in elevating Nokia’s touchscreen experience or does it drag down an otherwise stellar combination of high-end parts? We’re not sure where CNET‘s getting its information, but we’re liking what we see — a streamlined HP Envy-branded printer with a 3.45-inch touchscreen for apps, games, scanning docs, and yes indeed, occasionally affixing dye to pressed wood pulp at 30 pages per minute. It reportedly has a pair of mechanical paper trays that open and close like a CD drive, and CNET says it’ll ship October 4th for $249. Before you take those figures verbatim though, know that they might not be quite right, as the publication also says the $399 Android-powered HP Photosmart eStation C510 (aka Zeus with 7-inch Zeen tablet) is coming September 13th — a day when, we’re sure you’ll agree, the printer failed to arrive.

Also apparently slated for September 13th is the HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus, a full-size all-in-one inkjet model with a 4.3-inch touchscreen, now imbued with HP ePrintCenter apps. Why sit and talk to co-workers around that boring water-cooler, when you can play with your office’s printer instead? Two more pictures of the Envy 100 after the break, which is apparently badass enough to come with its own tote bag and 802.11n WiFi.

Update: We’re waiting for the HP IPG summit news conference to begin and, well, three guesses what that is hanging out on stage (pictured above). There’s a second shot after the break, with a Yahoo search widget clearly on display.

Update 2: Now official, dubbed the Photosmart eStation AIO, and unless our eyes deceive us, we definitely spotted an Android lock screen and status bar. All for $399. There’s a partnership in place with Yahoo, including numerous widgets (we’ve spotted search and weather so far). Something tells us there won’t be another search option, but we’ll find out for sure and let ya know. It’s currently being demoed live on stage. Google Calendar is there, as is a web browser.
