Doing a Lady Gaga: Wear Unicorns and Cupcakes on Your Eyelashes

I personally find Lady Gaga to be weird, but I guess embracing our differences is a big part of the image that she’s trying to project to fans and non-fans. It seems like she’s encouraging a whole range of other people, too. I doubt this wacky eyelash jewelry would’ve seen the light of day if it weren’t for her and her eclectic fashion sense.

Unicorn LashesI’m a true-blue girly-girl at heart but I can’t imagine putting on these unicorn-y eyelash jewelry on my eyelids. These false eyelash accessories are handmade with glass beads and ultra-fine beading wire by Natalie of EyelashJewelry. While I admit that they’re appealing in a very weird way, they also look like they could be pretty uncomfortable to wear.

The unicorn lashes actually sold just a few days ago, but you can check Natalie’s storefront for plenty of other whimsical designs if false eyelashes like this are your thing.

Samsung reveals TV and audio accessories galore at CES 2013

Samsung knows there’s more to a home entertainment room than a big screen TV alone, and the company has a bevy of new A/V kit for CES 2013 including home theater systems, Blu-ray, and the wireless speakers. Those looking for the complete surround sound experience have the Samsung HT-F9750W Home Theater System to consider, offering 1,330W of 7.1-channel surround sound (and virtual 10.1-channel support thanks to the DTS-Neo Fusion codec “upscaling” from 5.1- or 7.1-channel source material). It uses a vacuum tube and digital amp combo for sound as well as a 4K scaler processor and de-blocking algorithm for video – running on a 900MHz dualcore – together with the same AllShare streaming support as Samsung’s Smart TV line-up over the integrated WiFi connection.

There are two HDMI inputs and Bluetooth, while the bundled speakers include two towers and a rear wireless unit. All get Ceramic Polypropylene Injection Diaphragm spacer cones, for what Samsung promises is an improvement in audio response times.

If that’s too big for you, the Samsung HW-F750 Soundbar also features a vacuum tube and digital amp comp, with 310W out of 2.1-channels and support for virtual surround sound. A wireless subwoofer keeps the bass end happy, and there’s 3D Sound Plus processing which matches the virtual surround sound depth with the depth of 3D images on-screen. Bluetooth streaming supports mobile devices and certain Samsung TVs.

Also toting Bluetooth is the Samsung DA-F60 Portable Wireless Speakers, using aptX for higher quality streaming (with compatible source devices, such as Samsung’s more recent smartphones) and NFC for easier pairing. It also supports streaming from select Samsung TVs.

DA-F60

While streaming from Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Video on Demand, and other online sources has been built into Samsung’s Smart TVs for some time now, the company also has a new Blu-ray player for CES. The Samsung BD-F7500 can upscale to 4K resolution, and features integrated WiFi for AllShare streaming from mobile devices. It can also stream to a Samsung phone or tablet, thanks to Smart View support. Inside there are two 900MHz dualcore processors, and 7.1-channel analog audio outputs.

Samsung BD-F7500

The Samsung HT-F9750W Home Theater System, HW-F750 Soundbar, DA-F60 Wireless Speakers, and BD-F7500 Blu-ray player all will go on sale in the first half of 2013, with pricing to be confirmed.

Drift unveils new shoulder mount for action cams

Drift Innovations, the company behind a small line of unique action camcorders, has announced a new shoulder mount and harness system that lets extreme-sport athletes record point-of-view video without having to hold the camera or mount in on their helmets. The shoulder harness is easy to put on and even easier to take off.

Text

The position of the shoulder mount allows the wearer to place a Drift camera either forwards or backwards, depending on the perspective you want to go after. The harness is made so that users can record smoother, more aesthetically appealing filming angles — Drift says that the harness allows the camera to naturally follow the movement of the body to help eliminate undesired shaky footage.

The harness contains a “non slip” silicone banding to prevent it from sliding out of place while in use, and high-strength polymers were used to make the harness durable and long-lasting, and the buckles and locks are easy to adjust, allowing for quick and painless adjustments in the heat of the moment.

The harness is on sale now for only $39, which is certainly a decent price for a quality shoulder harness like this one, and it works on all of Drift’s cameras, including the Drift HD, the Drift HD 720, and the company’s newest camera, the Drift HD Ghost.

Mad Catz teases GameSmart mobile gaming peripherals for CES 2013

It looks like Mad Catz will have some special treats in store for CES this year. The company is teasing a new line of mobile gaming peripherals called GameSmart, and will consist of a full line of mobile gaming devices that include game controllers, mice, keyboards, headsets, and other specialty controllers.

Screen Shot 2013-01-04 at 10.07.36 AM

According to the landing page, the devices are “designed to work seamlessly and wirelessly with a wide array of devices and platforms,” and will connect to existing devices via Bluetooth. The peripherals will work with laptops, tablets, and smartphones, and will utilize Bluetooth Smart technology.

The company says it’ll include an app to add functionality to the peripherals, and they also expect the tech to help game developers bridge differences between platforms by offering standardized controllers. Although Mad Catz is waiting until CES to unveil these GameSmart gamepads, keyboards, mice, and headsets, the company says the hardware won’t launch until shortly after its unveiled.

Unfortunately, Mad Catz aren’t providing any photos of the new devices — not even a quick tease other than an outline of a generic-looking game controller, which looks an awful lot like an Xbox 360 controller. So it looks like we’ll be waiting until next week before we’ll see what these new mobile devices will look like.

G-Form drops an iPod touch in a case from 100,000 feet, rivals Felix’s antics (video)

GForm drops a caseprotected iPhone 5 from 100,000 feet, rivals Baumgartner at his own game video

Just because Felix Baumgartner set records by jumping from 128,000 feet doesn’t mean he has a lock on stratospheric freefall stunts: see G-Form’s latest video (after the break) as proof. In keeping with the tradition of launching a case line and then subjecting it to abuse on camera, the company dropped a new Xtreme iPhone 5 case from a balloon that reached 100,000 feet before it and its payload — which actually happened to be a 5th gen iPod touch — fell to the Nevada desert. Not surprisingly, that we’re hearing about the story means the drop went as planned — apart from needing some time to warm up after a plunge through -60F skies, the MP3 player emerged in fine shape. Is the freefall a publicity play that won’t affect how anyone uses an Xtreme in real life? You bet. Still, it’s one of the more dramatic drop tests we’ll witness, and evidence the case can take some exceptional abuse; after all, it’s not every day that our mobile devices reach terminal velocity.

Soundmatters Dash7 portable Bluetooth speaker to debut at CES 2013

We’re just a few days away from the start of CES 2013, and we can barely contain or excitement. That’s because this nifty little speaker will be making an appearance on the show floor next week. It’s called the Dash7 from Soundmatters, and it’s a small, portable Bluetooth speaker about the size of a typical smartphone.

soundmatters-dash7

The speaker boasts pristine omnidirectional sound and is also bundled with an angled stand for direct on-axis listening. It weighs just over 7 ounces, and it stands about 0.75-inches tall. Essentially, it’s designed to be nestled below your smartphone or tablet without restricting the view.

Plus, the Dash7 is incredibly slim for a speaker, making it easy to slip inside of a pocket or a laptop bag. Like the Jawbone Jambox, the Dash7 uses some clever tricks to boost its sound, mostly a tweeter/woofer combo and a moving battery for improved bass. It certainly can’t compete with a dedicated home stereo, but it’s designed to improve the sound coming from your smartphone or tablet anyway.

The Dash7 will be rolling out in late January and early February in a handful of colors, including red, white, black, and silver, and if you think this is the right Bluetooth speaker for you, you better come prepared with a fat wallet, since pre-ordering one now will set you back $219, and it comes with a $249 MSRP.

US retailer pegs Nexus 7 dock release for January 10th, we remain wary

US retailer pegs Nexus 7 dock release for January 10th, we remain wary

ASUS’ official dock for the Nexus 7 has been an elusive beast, to put it mildly: Americans, at least, have had to sit tight for half a year if they weren’t content with third-party hardware. We just might be reaching the end of that road, if B&H is right. The retailer is listing the audio-capable cradle as arriving January 10th for $40. The accessory could be tantalizingly close as a result, although we’ll believe it when we’re charging our tablets — we’ve seen as many retailers take stabs in the dark on release dates as those that use real information, so we may still be left waiting in a week’s time.

Samsung offers free Flip Cover and TecTiles for GS3 and Note II owners

Samsung has launched a promo to help Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II owners beat the post-holiday blues, with the promise of a free Flip Cover and free NFC TecTiles in return for registering their device. The offer, available to Samsung owners in the US, requires users to register their handset on the company’s Facebook Owner’s Hub, with a “customized care package” of accessories in return.

samsung_flip_case_tectiles

The Flip Covers for the Note II and Galaxy S III are Samsung’s official folio-style protection for the handsets. They involve replacing the battery cover, and have an attached flap – available in different colors – which covers up the display. Earlier this year, Samsung began offering holiday bundles for the GSIII and Note II, though they were priced from $39.99.

As for the TecTiles, they’re adhesive NFC tags which allow the handsets to be easily set into different modes – such as silent, or driving mode – by tapping them on the stickers. They can also be set to load apps or specific webpages, so if you always run the Sonos controller app when you walk in the front door, you can have a TapTile on the doorframe to trigger it automatically.

Of course, in return for the “care package” you’ll be giving Samsung some extra personal details, including your basic Facebook information – name, gender, any networks you’re in, your list of friends, and other public information on the social site – and your email address. If you’re happy with that, you can find more details – and a link to the Samsung Owner’s Hub – here.
