Acer Aspire R7 Star Trek Limited Edition Laptop: Kirk to Ivy Bridge, Beam Me Up!

Acer has unveiled a Star Trek themed notebook that looks stunning. In fact, it looks like it came right from the bridge of the rebooted Enterprise. The Acer Aspire R7 Star Trek Limited Edition. It kind of looks like the Enterprise herself when opened up halfway.

Star Trek Acer
This special edition notebook features a stainless steel Star Trek logo emblazoned on it too just so you get the point. The R7 also features a repositioned keyboard and trackpad and a high-definition touchscreen mounted on a “revolutionary ‘Ezel’ hinge” that allows it to flip, reverse, lie flat or float – though you don’t need the Star Trek edition to get this feature.

Acer has created only 25 of them and they will be auctioning a single unit off, with the proceeds going to two charities, The Mission Continues and Save the Children.

The computer comes with a Star Trek Into Darkness film poster signed by the cast, special content like wallpapers and videos from the movie, a soundtrack, a download of Star Trek: The Video Game, and Star Trek packaging.

Computex 2013 wrapup Windows 8, tablets, Haswell, highres displays, earthquakes and more!

This year’s Computex certainly didn’t come and go quietly. From a 6.5-magnitude earthquake shortly after landing in Taipei to tons of tablets, smartphones, Haswell systems and more peripherals than you can shake a Taiwan dollar at, this has been one whirlwind week of hot and humid adventure. Unlike other shows abroad, this country’s massive computer exhibition is only growing in importance, as more manufacturers from both East and West choose to announce products and services here in the Republic of China.

The week was filled with unveilings both revolutionary and evolutionary — from quirky to crucial, there was a lot to take in. You’ll find many of our show picks at our Computex 2013 event page; there are dozens upon dozens of articles, hands-on videos and photo galleries to sift through, so set aside some time over the weekend and dig on in. Acer shows off Aspire R7 Star Trek edition, we go eyes-on at Computex

Acer shows off Aspire R7 Star Trek edition, we go eyeson at Computex

No, we’re not making this up. We’ve always thought the Aspire R7 bore an uncanny resemblance to the USS Enterprise, and now it appears that Acer’s officially in on the fun, too. Our friends at Engadget Chinese stumbled upon a new version of the starship-esque convertible at Acer’s Computex booth today — the company manufactured just 25 of these special-edition notebooks, one of which it plans to offer up on eBay from June 14th through the 24th, with all proceeds going to charity. This variant is unique enough for us to look past the device’s shortcomings, and perhaps place a bid of our own. Star Trek (and industrial design) fans can get their fix in the eyes-on gallery just below.

Acer Iconia W3 is first 8” Windows 8 tablet

Computex 2013 is a platform for where companies take the opportunity to roll out their latest hardware as well as perform groundbreaking announcements, and Acer, who hails from Taiwan, decided not to lose this opportunity to make a splash in their own backyard by announcing what is the first 8.1” tablet in the industry that runs on the Windows 8 operating system – and it is known as the Acer Iconia W3. With the Acer Iconia W3, you are sure you will be able to enjoy portable entertainment as well as full PC capabilities, all controlled via a single hand, now how about that? In order to up the productivity ante, Acer has also ensured that the Acer Iconia W3 would come pre-loaded with the Microsoft Office Home & Student 2013 without requiring you to fork out an extra cent. This is generous on Microsoft’s part, but there is a method to this madness, too, since those who are weaned on the Microsoft Office environment would want to use the software the next time they graduate and enter the working world, where they might need to purchase the full copy then – helping Microsoft earn some more money along the way.

It is said that the Acer Iconia W3 is able to deliver an unprecedented tablet experience, where it boasts of a design that is compact enough to be used comfortably with just one hand, regardless of whether you are using it to read or to browse the Internet. The 8.1” display is more than adequate to handle all your entertainment and desktop applications, and it does not matter whether you are a professional, student or family, the Acer Iconia W3 suits just about all of you just fine.

The entire shebang was specially designed with productivity in mind, where it tips the scales at a mere 1.10 pounds, and measures just 0.45” thin, making it a snap to tote around anywhere you like. The Acer Iconia W3 would be able to be paired to an optional full-size Bluetooth keyboard which would be able to hold the tablet upright whenever you need to type, as well as allowing you to dock it to the tablet conveniently so that it lays flat for easy screen-protected transportation. It is said that the keyboard itself mirrors the size of those that can be found on larger 13.3” notebooks, making it comfortable to use even for long hours of typing on end. Running on an Intel Atom processor, the Acer Iconia W3 has up to 8 hours of battery life on a single full charge, where it is accompanied by a 720p resolution LED display, front- and rear-facing 2MP webcams, micro-HDMI and microUSB connectivity, and will arrive in 32GB or 64GB configurations which can be further expanded via a microSD memory card slot.

Acer upgrades its PCs with Haswell, new models include the Aspire V7 Ultrabook

Acer upgrades its PCs with Haswell, new models include the Aspire V7 Ultrabook

This is hardly the biggest Acer news of the week (that would be this, this and this), but it’s worth a PSA nonetheless. Now that Intel’s formally unveiled Haswell, Acer announced it’ll be refreshing much of its PC lineup with those fourth-generation chips — 23 notebooks and six desktops, to be exact. Obviously, that includes too many models and configurations for us to discuss today, but Acer did say the updates will span the S7, M, V3, V5, V7 and E Series laptop lines, with prices ranging from $600 to $1,600. On the desktop side, the changes are limited to AT3-605 series and the Predator AG3-605 series, with prices running the gamut from $700 to $1,500.

If there’s one model that caught our eye, though, it would be an Ultrabook from Acer’s recently announced Aspire V7 series. The V7-482PG-9884-U (how’s that for a name?) has 14-inch IPS display, a Core i7-4500U processor, a 4GB NVIDIA GeForce GT750M GPU, 12GB of RAM and a 1TB HDD. That’ll be available this month for $1,300, putting it squarely at the high end of what Acer has to offer.

Acer Aspire S7 Ultrabook announced

Every company needs a flagship device to keep it going, never mind that the flagship device is never going to sell as many units as their “bread and butter” models so to speak. For instance, Mercedes Benz has their S Class range that is the epitome of luxury for the brand, while BMW has their 7 Series. When it comes to the world of Ultrabooks, Acer’s previous champion, the Acer Aspire S7 has proved itself to be more than a decent performer, especially with its 180-degree display capability. Well, Acer has taken the opportunity this time around at Computex 2013 in Taipei to unveil a next-generation version of their 13.3-inch Aspire S7 Ultrabook which will not only retain the celebrated characteristics of its predecessor, but the brand new Aspire S7 will also introduce improved battery life for all-day computing, a refined electroluminescent (EL) backlit keyboard that delivers a more natural typing experience, and 2nd generation Acer TwinAir cooling that runs quieter than ever before, in addition to having wireless display (WiDi) technology which will offer big-screen entertainment and productivity.

The Acer Aspire S7-392 will boast of Acer’s first 10-point touch WQHD display, where it will be accompanied by IPS technology that squeezes out an extremely impressive 2,560 x 1,440 resolution into a 13.3-inch screen. Not only that, your eyes ought to enjoy consistent and accurate colors at viewing angles up to 170 degrees on the IPS display, and it even comes with the touch benefits that are offered by Windows 8, with the ability to option up the touch-enabled screen on the S7 to a full 180° for those moments when you want to make a presentation across the table.

Other hardware specifications include dual-array microphones, Acer’s proprietary PurifiedVoice technology, a 4th generation Intel Core processor and a RAID 0 solid state drive for fast wakeup and read/write times. The entire shebang tips the scales at a mere 1.3kg, and it measures just 12.9mm thin, being made out of premium materials and features a dual-torque, T-shape hinge frame design that delivers wobble-free touch use. With a Gorilla Glass 2 surface that is smooth to the touch, this Aspire S7 Ultrabook is definitely a thing of beauty, where prices will start from €1,450 onwards this July.
