Those 7mm-thick hard drives you’ve seen in some Ultrabooks are already looking a tad on the chunky side. Western Digital has started producing sample versions of a hybrid hard drive (you’re not yet looking at it here) that measures just 5mm (0.2in) tall, even as it crams in both flash and a 500GB main disk. If you think the slimmer drive is just the ticket for a best-of-all-worlds laptop that’s both fast and capacious, you’re not alone: Acer and ASUS have mentioned their collaboration in the same breath, which may be a strong clue as to where future Aspires and Zenbooks are going. The remaining question is when they arrive. Sampling isn’t the same as mass production, which could leave us with months to go before the 5mm drive lands in future extra-skinny PCs.

Back in July it was reported that Acer had plans to only release Windows Phone 8 handsets in 2013. However according to the folks at Digitimes, Acer’s president Jim Wong told them that they will only be releasing one Windows Phone 8 device in 2013, and 5 Android devices as well. Now as far as the mobile industry is concerned, Acer has been known for their computers and tablets like the Iconia series for example, and not so much their mobile phones. While they have released several in the past, it’s safe to say that they were far from memorable.
According to the report from Digitimes, Acer has plans for high-end devices which will feature Qualcomm’s dual-core CPUs, although come 2013 we have to wonder if dual-core could still be considered “high-end” especially in a market where quad-core smartphones are becoming more commonplace. In any case we’re not sure if Acer’s upcoming smartphones will be able to compete against some of the bigger players in the smartphone market such as Samsung or HTC, but it will be interesting to see what they will be able to offer.

Here comes a new Full HD monitor from Acer, the G236HLbii. Adopting a TN panel, this new 23-inch LED-backlight monitor provides 1920 x 1080 Full HD resolution, 1000:1 contrast ratio, 250 cd/m2 brightness, 5ms response time and 170/160 degree viewing angles, and features both D-Sub and HDMI connectors. We’ve officially entered the final hours of August, and in typical SlashGear fashion, we’re sending thing off with a bang. Today’s IFA adventures didn’t produce as much news as the two days before it, but we still have plenty of hands-on posts for you to check out, just like yesterday. We got to check out a couple of Dell’s upcoming products today, spending some hands-on time with the Dell XPS Duo 12 and the more traditional Dell XPS 10. Dell wasn’t the only one showing off new computers and a tablets today though, as we also have a hands-on with HP ENVY TouchSmart Ultrabook 4, SpectreXT and ENVY x2, along with a hands-on post for the new Toshiba Satellite U920t.
We also got to have a look a bunch of interesting devices and accessories today, ranging from the Lifeproof case for the iPhone4/4S and the Jarba Soulmate to the E-Ink concept phone and the iRobot Scooba 390 and 290. It was definitely an exciting day for new gadgets and devices, so be sure to look through all of those hands-on posts.
The next iPhone made an appearance in some new images today, and in them we get an idea of its measurements. Speaking of rumored iDevices, the iPad Mini has apparently popped in one app developer’s device files, and Apple may eventually face an iPhone 5 stock bottleneck due to a shortage of screens at Sharp. The Nokia Lumia 920 PureView and Lumia 820 Windows Phone 8 handsets suffered a leak today (complete with images of the Lumia 820 Arrow later in the day), and Facebook had to revise its profit forecast by slashing $1 billion from it.
We were introduced to a slew of Windows 8 products today, most of which belong to Lenovo. This includes the Lenovo IdeaCentre A520, the IdeaPad Z series of notebooks, the IdeaPad U510 ultrabook and the Lenovo IdeaCentre B340 and B545 all-in-one PCs. Acer got in on the Windows 8 action as well, introducing the world to the Acer Aspire M3.
It may not be long before your Samsung device can react to your body language, today we seemed to get confirmation that the iPhone 5 is on the way with a new iPhone “recycling” program, and a round of Xbox-branded games have been confirmed for Windows 8 PCs. On the same day that reported images of the next Kindle Fire leaked, we get word that Amazon is planning to announce two new Kindle Fires at its press conference on September 6. The Samsung Galaxy Stellar appears to be hitting Verizon on that same day, and finally tonight, Bethesda has hinted that Skyrim‘s first DLC, Dawnguard, may not make it to the PS3.

Over in Berlin at IFA 2012, the folks at Acer have revealed their next-generation Ultrabook lineup by the name of Aspire M3 touch. This lineup improves on their Ultrabook offerings thus far with a 10-point touch display optimized for Windows 8. The Acer Aspire M3 touch is just 22mm thin and weighs in at 2.3kg, toting with it a frameless 15.6-inch display with full touch capabilities.
Inside you’ll find a next-generation NVIDIA GeForce GT640M GPU, the first in an Acer Ultrabook, and a 3rd Generation Intel Core processor besides. You’ll also get Dolby Home Theater v4 audio enhancements working with what Acer calls “premium” speakers – hard hits and big beats on the way! This unit also has battery power that Acer rates at a full day of productivity and entertainment unplugged.
The Aspire M3 touch has a lovely dark casing made of aluminum alloy and works with a chiclet keyboard including full QWERTY and numeric keypad as well. You’ve got an oversized touchpad for precision control aside from your touchscreen, and the whole device is, again, so thin that you’ll want to bring it everywhere. This unit works with Acer Instant Connect so you can reconnect to access points you’ve got saved up in just 2.5 seconds, and Acer Green Instant-On so you can resume from sleep mode in 1.5 seconds.
This unit is one of several revealed – or presented again – at IFA 2012 in Berlin. In case you haven’t noticed, there are two kinds of Windows 8 devices on display at IFA this week: laptop / tablet hybrids, and already-announced laptops, refreshed to include touchscreens. Acer’s newest two Ultrabooks fall into that second category: the company just announced touch-enabled versions of its Aspire M3 Ultrabook and Aspire V5 thin-and-light. For now, Acer isn’t saying a word about price or availability, so for now you’ll have to be content with a few spec details, all embedded after the break.

As we inch closer towards that October 26th release, the glut of announced Windows 8 devices continues to grow and today is no exception. At Acer’s press conference here at IFA 2012, the company unveiled its new all-in-one PC: the Aspire ZS600. At first glance, the AIO’s adjustable aluminum frame enclosure didn’t much strike us “contemporary” per the company’s claims, as it seemed to blend into the vast array of similar PCs showcased at the booth. And without any available keyboard dock to help us navigate that vibrant 23-inch full HD display, we were left to make use of the screen’s 10-point multi-touch which proved a tad frustrating, bordering on ineffectual — at least on this demo model. We also witnessed a considerable amount of glare in our brief time testing the product, though it’s worth noting we were surrounded by a multitude of showroom lighting.
Powering this multimedia-focused family AIO along is Intel’s 3rd generation chipsets (up to Core i7) joined by Dolby Home Theatre 4.1 for superior sound and AcerCloud for convenient personal media streaming. The company’s offering users the ability to configure it with up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT 640, as well as a generous 2TB SATA hard disk. As far as optical options go, consumers can choose from a Blu-ray player or standard DVD drive. You’ll have to sit tight for this fella to head to market, but rest assured you should see it on retails shelves before year’s end — we hope. While you wait, why not check out our gallery below?

We took a good look at the AcerCloud service early this year and its companion Android handset, the award-winning CloudMobile phone. Now, Acer has launched a beta service in Europe, so buyers of the company’s new laptops and desktop machines over there will be able to try it out for themselves. To get it working, you can install the portal app onto your Android device and Acer PC, allowing you to download images and other files between the pair. You can also send files back to your computer for backup, expanding the storage of your smartphone or slate through your own mini-cloud. Everything will be synced through the service, which will store the data if your home machine isn’t fired up — and transfer everything when it’s alive again. There’s no word on when users will be able to partake stateside, but if you’re across the pond, hit the source link for the mobile app.

It wasn’t long ago that Acer announced the elegantly named Liquid Gallant: a dual-SIM Android handset made for the jetset. And now, here at IFA 2012, we got a chance to spend some time with the device up close at the company’s booth. As single-core handsets go, this one was quite brisk, loaded up with a 1GHz MTK 6575 CPU buffered by 1GB RAM that handled the mostly stock version of Android 4.0.4 with ease. The screen itself was also rather nice, spanning 4.3-inches and delivering a 960 x 540 qHD resolution. Build-wise, this phone is on the bulkier side and definitely gives the impression of having been stacked together in layers. There are some nice flourishes to its design, such as the silvery plastic grill along its back bottom, but that’s about as impressive as this one gets.
As we mentioned earlier, the Liquid Gallant packs slots for two SIMs (which you’ll notice in our gallery below), a 5-megapixel rear camera accompanied by single LED flash and micro-USB port. Internally, the phone also sports 4GB of storage, so you’ll most likely need to lean upon that microSD slot for expansion. Clearly, this isn’t a high-ender, but it doesn’t need to be. With a nearly vanilla Android experience, sturdy though unattractive chassis and appreciable resolution, it’s a considerable option for globe-trotters with less intense mobile needs.
