First Acer-branded smartphone a Glofiish DX900 rebadge?

There’s bound to be more, but the first leaked Acer handset expected to be unveiled at Mobile World Congress is no more than a rebadge of a device obtained through its acquisition of E-Ten. The Glofiish DX900 was announced in mid-2008 with dual-SIM support, GPS, a 3 megapixel camera, and a 2.8-inch VGA touchscreen riding a Windows Mobile 6.1 OS — that all stays the same. In other words, if the leak is accurate, then this particular device will see a new logo and that’s about it. Still, the MWC invite specifically said “smartphones launch” so we’re not corking the fat lady just yet.

Acer confirms plans for Linux, SSD-equipped 10-inch Aspire One netbooks

It wasn’t making any promises on launch day, but Acer has reportedly now confirmed that it will indeed be offering both Linux and SSD options on its new 10-inch Aspire One netbook, though you won’t be able to get either option right out of the gate. Expectedly, the Linux distribution on tap is Linpus Linux, and it looks like the only SSD option will be a 16GB drive — no word on pricing for either, unfortunately. There’s also no firm word on a released date, though it’ll apparently be some time after the mid-February roll out of the Windows XP-equipped model.

Acer uncages AMD-powered Ferrari 1200 ultraportable

Wow, has it really been almost a year since Acer’s Ferrari 1100 ultraportable was released from the garage? Believe it or not, the proper successor to the aforesaid machine is just now getting its inspection sticker, and it’s apparently planning to hit the streets of Britain in the near future. The Ferrari 1200 arrives with an elegant LED-backlit 12.1-inch panel, a carbon fiber cover, a unique ventilation design that “echoes the exhaust pipes of F1 cars” and an “anodized-metal touchpad that resembles the brake and acceleration pedals of a Ferrari car.” Corny? Sure, but it’s good to know you aren’t paying a premium for a logo and nothing more, right? At any rate, you’ll also find a bundled BT wireless mouse, an optional Xpress VoIP phone, WiFi module, an AMD Turion X2 Ultra CPU, up to 4GB of DDR2 RAM, a SATA HDD and a fingerprint reader for good measure. Mum’s the word on pricing / availability, but we’d bank on “expensive” and “soon.”

Acer Launching Smartphone Feb. 16th

acersmartphoneinvite.jpg

Get ready Barcelona. Acer sent out a press invite this week letting the world know that it’s using this year’s Mobile World Congress to launch their new smartphone line.

Acer bought Taiwanese mobile manufacturer E-Ten last March; they made a line of Windows Mobile phones called Glofiish that pretty much nobody in North America owns. Mobile analyst Sascha Segan tried to review one once, and it gave him an electric shock. That pretty much put him off E-Ten. Acer, of course, has a much better reputation for quality.

In April, Acer president Gianfranco Lanci said he was aiming for smartphones to make up 10 percent of his company’s revenue, and that he would look for carrier partners to sell his phones. Combined with Acer’s strength in PCs in the US, that may mean their devices are coming to these shores. We’ll have more details on Feb. 16.

Acer smartphone launching February 16th, everybody flamenco!

Shortly after Acer snapped up E-Ten last year it’s been making public and private mention of plans to launch an Acer-branded smartphone. Now we’ve got a date: February 16th at the big Mobile World Congress cellphone event in Barcelona. We’ll be there so let’s call it a date, deal? Iaaaaiaiaiiaa!

Acer’s 10-inch netbook gets model numbers, release date

The world’s been waiting for details on Acer’s up and coming 10-inch Aspire, and we just got ’em in our hot little hands. The Aspire One D150 lineup hits the streets of France beginning in February with the D150-0B. This €329 ($425) netbook sports a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, 1GB memory, 160GB hard drive, a 10.1-inch (1024 x 600) display, and a 3-cell battery. Then in March, the D150-1B makes its appearance. An enhanced version of the D150, this device is otherwise identical, save a 6-cell battery that should be good for up to 7 hours — the battery upgrade will set you back a cool €349 ($450). Lastly, the D150-2BG will be rocking an Intel Atom 1.66GHz N280 processor and sports integrated 3G quadband UMTS/HSDPA mobile broadband, and the 6-cell battery. Also available in March, this one has a price tag of €449 ($575). No word on a domestic street date, but you’ll know as soon as we do.

Acer patent application reveals a MID-filled future

Now that the netbook sector is good and saturated, Acer is carving out a spot for itself in the entirely less crowded MID market. Or, at least that’s the impression we get from its most recent patent application. The image you see above is about it for details, though it’s fairly safe to assume that an Atom (or similar low-power CPU) will be housed within. Who knows, maybe we’ll get a peek of this critter for real at CeBIT — you can bet we’ll be looking.

[Thanks, Chris]

Gateway ZX2300 all-in-one looks to give Eee the bum’s rush

In a move that Acer is hoping will both increase its subsidiary’s status in its native country and give the Eee Top a run for its money, Gateway’s new all-in-one PC is set to hit Taiwan sometime in the near future. The Windows XP Home-based ZX2300 rocks an 18.5-inch screen up front with a 16:9 aspect ration and a 1366 x 768 resolution. Under the hood you can expect to find an AMD Athlon 2650e processor with 1GB memory, 160GB storage, Wi-Fi, webcam, and a Lightscribe DVD burner. No word on a street date, but lucky folks in Taiwan can expect to pay $17900 (NT) — roughly $530 (US). Full specs after the break.

Rumor: 10-inch Acer Aspire One to replace 8.9-incher

We’re hearing some murmurings today that Acer’s planning on replacing its current, 8.9-inch Aspire One with the previously seen 10.1-inch Aspire One (the 103), phasing out the former. The new model will pack a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, and 1GB of RAM, optional 3G, SDHC card slot, and 3 USB ports — relatively standard fare, to be sure — though it’s going to come in a few sexy colors we sure do like the looks of Sure, Digitimes (the source of this rumor) isn’t necessarily the most reliable paper we read in the morning with our coffee, but this particular tidbit doesn’t strike us as terribly far-fetched. We’ll have to (reportedly) wait until sometime in the second quarter to find out for sure, though. In the meantime: calm down.

Update: This worst-kept secret is now official, with Acer confirming plans to release its rumored 10-incher, but not saying just when or for how much. The confirmed specs are exactly what we expected — go figure.

The 10-inch Acer Aspire One takes some beauty shots

Sure, the 10-inch Acer Aspire One isn’t what you’d call classified material, but most of the leaked pictures we’ve seen so far have been pretty low-rent — so this latest batch of leaked photos showing the Atom-powered netbook all gussied up for the camera might stir some deeper feelings in that cold heart of yours. It looks like we’ll be getting multiple colors in addition to that new non-stupid trackpad button layout, so that’s fun — we’re quite taken with the red model here. Now if Acer would just hurry up and tell us what we already know. More shots at the read link.
