Acer intros Aspire X1700 SFF PC, 23-inch H233H 1080p LCD monitor

Looks like Acer‘s expanding its small form factor PC family once more, and this time it’s the Aspire X1700 slotting itself in between the X3200 and X1200. Measuring in at 10.4- x 4- x 14.4-inches, the mini PC includes a 2.4GHz Intel dual-core E2200 CPU, 4GB of DDR2 RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 7100 graphics, nine (yes, as in the number prior to ten) USB 2.0 sockets, a multi-card reader, 640GB SATA II hard drive, dual-layer DVD writer, an HDMI socket, eSATA port and a USB keyboard / mouse combo to boot. In somewhat related news, Acer is also choosing today to introduce the H233H 23-inch display, which touts a 1,920 x 1,080 native resolution, 5-millisecond response time, 300 nits of brightness, 160-degree viewing angles, twin 1.5-watt speakers and a maximum contrast ratio of 40,000:1. Both products should be available as we speak for $479.99 and $229.99 in order of mention, but it’s on you to hunt down a reseller. Full release is after the break.

Acer’s 10-inch Aspire One 103 in photos

Acer’s 10-inch Aspire One isn’t exactly a secret, but we haven’t seen straight-on pictures of it yet — and glory be, it looks like the rumors of a revised trackpad button layout were true. Not only that, but it’s a multitouch model, so you’ll be ready for the Windows 7 party. Nothing spectacular other than that — you’re looking at a pretty standard 1.6GHz Atom, 1GB of RAM, optional 3G, SDHC card slot, and 3 USB ports. More pics at the read link.

Worldwide PC Growth Has Worst Growth Rate Since 2002, Says Gartner

gartner-logo.jpg

As if we didn’t have enough already, here comes some more bad tech news.

Tech research company Gartner said Wednesday that during the fourth quarter of 2008, the worldwide PC industry suffered its slowest growth rate since 2002. Gartner reported that worldwide shipments of PCs totaled 78.1 million units, which was just a 1.1 percent increase from the fourth quarter of 2007.

The region most affected by the recession in terms of PC growth was Asia/Pacific, which “recorded the worst shipment growth since Gartner started its PC statistics research,” said Mika Kitagawa, principal analyst for Gartner’s Client Computing Markets group. Comparatively, in the U.S., the PC market declined 10 percent, which is the worst shipment decline since the last U.S. recession in 2001.

The biggest winner in this time period was Acer, which continued to show incredible growth with PC shipments growing 31.1 percent worldwide and 55.4 percent in the U.S.

The biggest loser was Dell, which declined 16.4 percent in the U.S., where it leads the region for computer shipments.

Acer kicks out TravelMate 6593, 6493 laptops for the corporate set

As you may or, more likely, may not, remember, Acer introduced a pair of TravelMate 6593 and 6493 laptops way back in July of last year, but it looks like the company isn’t one to let a good model number go by the wayside, and it’s now rolled out some new, seemingly updated models aimed specifically at corporate customers. From the looks of it, the new models will also only be available in some stock configurations, with the 15.4-inch TravelMate 6593 packing a Core 2 Duo T9500 processor, 4GB of RAM, the usual integrated Intel graphics, and a 250GB hard drive, while the 14.1-inch 6493 comes equipped with a Core 2 Duo T8300 processor and 3GB of RAM, along with mostly similar specs across the board. You”ll also be able to pair each with an ezDock II or ezDockII+ and, yes, you can get your hands on ’em right now (for between $1,099 and $1,499).

More 10-inch Acer Aspire One rumors trickle out

We’d already gotten a solid word from Acer Taiwan president Scott Lin that there would indeed be a 10-inch Aspire One in early 2009, and now we’ve got some purported pictures and informations to chew on. According to the Aspire One fan-blog macles*, the upcoming revision will come in white, black and red flavors, with a 10.1-inch screen (at the same 1024 x 600 resolution of the existing model) and options for 3G and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR. Perhaps most exciting — to us non-mutants, anyways — is the removal of those pesky trackpad-flanking mouse buttons, with a regular-looking button below the trackpad instead doing the honors. Less exciting, however, is the purported lack of Linux and SSD SKUs. The laptop also dropped its Storage Expansion slot in lieu of a good old-fashioned multi-card reader. All-in-all, it sounds like some very mainstream tweaks to an already ultra-popular netbook, and we can’t fault Acer for that. Word is the new Aspire One will be landing in February, no mention of price just yet.

Acer’s quad-core packing Aspire 8930G hits the streets, guns blazing

Acer’s just updated their 8930G gaming line, adding the 8930-7665 to its arsenal. This 18.4-inch beast boasts Intel’s new (and surprisingly affordable) Core 2 Quad Mobile Q9000 CPU, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, a 500GB 7200 SATA hard drive, and NVIDIA GeForce 9700M GT graphics with 512MB of dedicated video memory. Other than that, it’s identical to previous 8930G models. Sure, it’s a little extreme, but hey — why not? It’s available now, if you’re willing to drop $1800.
