Adidas Social Media Shoe concept moves tweets to the track

Adidas is known for making connected shoes — but never quite as linked-up as a Nash Money concept making its appearance late into the London Olympics. The Social Media Barricade weaves the guts of a phone and a basic two-line LCD into a running shoe, letting the footwear take Twitter updates very literally on the run through a public account. Even the signature Adidas stripes change their hue through remote control. Before anyone gets visions of athletes checking congratulatory tweets after the 100-meter sprint, just remember that it’s an idea rather than a production blueprint: although Adidas is quick to call the Social Media Barricade the “future of athlete connectivity,” the only athletes putting eyes on a pair right now are those swinging by the Olympics’ media lounge for interviews. Knowing this, we can still imagine some future shoes padding runners’ egos at the finish line during the 2016 Rio games.

Adidas unveils the Social Media Shoe for tweeps

German sports clothing manufacturer Adidas is infusing technology into its 60-year old sagacity by introducing a shoe that can receive tweets. Just in time for the London Olympics, Adidas decided to revamp the adiPower Barricade shoe by turning it into a Social Media Shoe. Adidas has outfitted the 2012 Adidas Barricade tennis sneaker with an Arduino unit, an external LCD to display information to user, and a customized software that polls the Twitter APIs to share specific data on the shoe screen.

The Social Media Shoe also features an LED lighting embedded into its three stripes, with its colors controllable by a remote control. Adidas said that the “teched-out” shoe is now displayed at the Adidas media lounge. Man, you can even send your tweets to @adidasbarricade and see if it tweets back. Adidas is planning to mass produce the shoe sometime in 2016. “You’ve got fans tweeting athletes, athletes tweeting fans, and to top that, you have an Adidas sneaker that lets you tweet an athlete while they’re on the court. In 2016, every athlete might have a shoe like this,” Adidas said. Check out the video after the break.

Adidas miCoach Elite System set to equip all MLS teams in 2013, creates world's first 'smart league'

Today was yet another marvelous day for football buffs everywhere, as Adidas and MLS have announced Major League Soccer will be the first intelligent circuit on the globe. Having already planned an official debut for the German company’s Elite System, now the pair’s made it known that the wearable technology is going to be expanding well beyond next week’s All-Star Game and into the MLS 2013 season. To refresh your mind a bit, the miCoach Elite System tracks an array of instrumental player data, such as speed (even if painfully slow like the Rio Ferdinand of late), acceleration, position, heartbeat and even the intensity of play — which is then pushed instantly to, you guessed it, a coach’s miCoach-equipped iPad. Adidas didn’t mention when, or if, the Elite System will be adapted elsewhere, so we’ll have to wait and see how long it takes others to join the “smart soccer” fun.

Increasingly, the image of a “sports nerd” is a pasty weakling with a laptop and a spreadsheet. It’s Moneyball’s fault, or something.
