Apple refreshes the MacBook Air with Haswell CPUs, longer battery life, new models available today from $999

Each June, just like clockwork, Apple refreshes its MacBook Air line — sometimes with a new design, and always with brand new processors. Well, today is June 10th, and it’s the start of WWDC, which means it’s time to bring out the 2013 models. The company just unveiled the new 11- and 13-inch Airs, both of which step up to Haswell CPUs and 802.11ac WiFi, and also promise significantly longer battery life. In particular, the 11-inch model claims nine hours of runtime, up from five, while the 13-incher is said to last 12 hours (up from seven). As for processing performance, you get fourth-generation Intel Core i5 and i7 processors, along with Intel HD 5000 graphics, which should translate to 40 percent faster graphics, according to Apple.

The one thing we can’t glean from Apple’s brief tease at WWDC is whether these new models boast higher-res screens than the previous-generation models. (We feel like Apple would make that clear if that were the case, no?) On the plus side, both models now come standard with 128GB SSDs (as opposed to 64 gigs on the 11-inch model). They’re available today, with the 11-inch version still priced from $999, and the 13-incher starting at $1,099.

Update: The Apple Store is once again live, which means we’ve had a chance to look at the product page for the new MacBook Air. As we suspected, the screen resolution has not changed.

Twitter narrows TweetDeck AIR and mobile app shutdowns to May 7th

TweetDeck for Android RIP

Twitter has been warning for weeks that it would shut down TweetDeck’s AIR and mobile apps sometime in early May, but it didn’t say exactly when loyalists would finally have to move on. The company now has a firm date: May 7th. In just over two weeks, Twitter will both pull the apps from their respective stores and stop existing installs from working as the service’s version 1.0 API rides into the sunset. While the persisting native and web-based desktop apps will lessen some of the sting, we’d suggest that you pay your last respects if you have fond memories of TweetDeck’s early apps.

This Isn’t an Alien Invasion… They’re Just Smog-Cleaning Robot Jellyfish!

Most modern cities have bad air, it just comes with the fact that when people live very close together, and they have a lot of cars and industrial complexes, they pollute the environment. Heavy traffic doesn’t help at all, and that’s why this unusual new kind of structure has been conceived to help clean things up.

robotic jellyfish pollution ph conditioner skyscraper

The PH Conditioner Skyscraper is a concept for a large-scale floating pollution-combating platform that aims to manage the effects of acid deposition due to pollutants, and turn them into reclaimed water as well as chemical fertilizer.

While this might look and sound like science-fiction, designers Hao Tian, Huang Haiyang and Shi Jianwei developed this in the hopes of deploying them in Chongqing, China. The structures look like robotic jellyfish, and the project aims to set them at between 650 to 1,000 feet in height, where most of the acidic pollutants gather. The top of these structures would be filled with hydrogen to provide buoyancy. Porous membranes absorb the pollutants, which are collected and put into a purifier.

It will be interesting to see the impact on large cities if and when this is deployed in China. Personally, I welcome our robotic jellyfish overlords, especially when they come bearing clean air.

Space Invaders Wall Vent Lets Aliens Flow Freely into Your Living Room

Personally, the idea of letting space aliens into my home makes me nervous. I’m not sure if they’d want to do some sort of invasive probing, or just cut my brain open to see what’s inside. Either way, I’d rather keep the invaders out. But if you feel at home with the idea of visitors from another planet hanging out in your space, then you might want to let them in through the air ducts.

space invaders air vent cover

These fun Space Invaders wall vent covers feature cutouts of the entire Space Invaders game field, and are laser cut from plywood by Little Big Laser Design Studio. Though you might need to move your cannon quickly, since it appears you have no defenses left. That could only mean one thing – alien dust bunnies will be coming out of your vents soon!

space invaders laser cut closeup

If you happen to live in a part of the world where wall vents are small squares, like in the UK, you’re in luck. Here in the good old U.S. of A., air registers look completely different. Though even if you don’t use this to cover up your air vents, you could always screw it to the wall and just admire it on its artistic merits. You can find one over on Etsy for £14.99 (~$23 USD) each.

Twitter to drop TweetDeck for AIR, Android and iOS, will also pull Facebook integration

Twitter to drop TweetDeck for AIR, Android and iOS, also pulling Facebook integration

We hope you weren’t overly attached to TweetDeck for Android and iOS on mobile, or AIR on the desktop. Twitter has revealed that it’s sending those birds the way of the dodo: all three will be pulled from their relevant app stores in early May, and they should stop functioning altogether not long after that point. Facebook integration also won’t hang around, the company says. The company argues that web-based versions of TweetDeck (and their native equivalents) will do the job on the desktop, and that expansion of the regular Twitter app should be enough to cover “most” smartphone and tablet users. However, it also acknowledges that there will be at least a few mobile users who’ll have no official recourse for a more advanced experience, especially if they value Facebook. Good thing the company isn’t limiting access to third-party alternatives… wait a minute.

If you’re one of those people that are concerned about the quality of the air you breathe when indoors, Thanko has a new USB-powered air purifier to keep things fresh. The air purifier plugs into the USB port on your computer and slurps up the bad air, filters it, and then spits it back out for you to breathe. The purifier also promises to remove odors.

thanko puri

The device uses a six-layer filter element that can trap particles in the air as small as 0.3 micrometers. To remove smells from the area, the gadget has an integrated ionizer. This USB-powered purifier also has a UV light to help kill any germs and bacteria floating in the air around you.

That means it might help you stave off the flu the guy in the cubicle next to you brought to work. UV light has been used in a hospital settings for years to kill airborne germs and bacteria, and it actually works.

The air purifier sells for ¥5,980 (~$64 USD) and I’ll assume if you live in the US and need one of these, shipping will be very expensive since Thanko is located in Japan.

Dyson Airblade Tap: Wash and Dry

While it’s been designed for use in public spaces, I’m pretty sure that I’d like to have a Dyson Airblade Tap at home. This water faucet is combined with a very powerful hand dryer, which will dry your hands in a matter of seconds.

dyson airblade tap

Anyone who’s ever used a Dyson Airblade knows that they dry hands very quickly, but there’s still the problem of all the water from people’s hands puddling on the floor of the bathroom as they walk from the sink to the dryer. So it’s definitely a smart idea to combine a hand dryer with a faucet, letting you dry your hands without dripping water all over the floor.

dyson airblade tap tech

The Airblade Tap’s fully-integrated 1400W motor is housed under the sink and draws in air through a HEPA filter before blasting it out. It uses photo sensors to detect when your hands are placed beneath the tap or under the drying jets. After washing your hands, it will dry them in just 14 seconds.

The Dyson Airblade Tap will retail for £999.99 (~$1,569 USD). Dyson claims that it can dry the hands of 15 people for the cost of only one paper towel. Now that’s efficient.

Hole-y Air Conditioned Shoes! Now You Can Say Goodbye to Stinky, Sweaty Feet

So these air-conditioned shoes from Chiyoda don’t exactly come with an actual air conditioner, but they’ll have to do for the moment until someone figures out a way to do that. Not like the latter sounds like a very practical idea, but if there’s a market for it, then why not?

Airconditioned ShoesChiyoda’s air-conditioned shoes follow the same concept used by makers of breathable sneakers and running shoes. You’ll find not one, not two, but six air vents on the shoe’s sole to facilitate air movement from your feet to the outside world.

But the added airiness comes with a price: you run the risk of dirtier soles (your actual soles, this time) because of the openings. You’ll also have to wary when it’s raining, because the water will probably creep up the holes and into the shoe itself.

They’re being sold for 7,245 yen (~ $78 USD) on Chiyoda’s site.

Chinese Man Sells Canned Air to Raise Smog Awareness in Beijing

Beijing isn’t doing so hot right now. I don’t mean their weather, and I’m not talking about their economy either. Rather, I’m talking about the alarming reports regarding the state of their smog-laden atmosphere, which news agencies have been covering non-stop since a week ago.

As if that isn’t enough to raise awareness on the situation, entrepreneur-slash-activist Chen Guangbiao is now marketing canned air to fellow citizens with the hopes of creating a bigger buzz about the situation.

canned air 3

Hopefully, the Chinese government will take action – and soon. People have already been advised to stay indoors and wear masks to protect their lungs from the smog. The air won’t clear up on its own if the people don’t do something about it, and from the looks of it, it’s high time they take matters into their own hands.

beijing smog

Going back to Chen and his canned air, it would seem like what he’s selling is more of a novelty than an actual product. I say this because of the variety of canned air he currently has up for sale, like post-industrial Taiwan, revolutionary Yan’an, and pristine Tibet.

Canned Air

Aside from that, Chen claims that his cans of air come with a chip that detects the concentration of negative oxygen ions; when it reaches a certain concentration level, the can’s lid automatically shuts. But at 80 cents a piece, I doubt he’ll be making much of a profit.

But still, the idea and the goal behind the entire project is a commendable one. I just hope it helps drive the point home and that something good and substantial comes out of it.
