Getting out of bed is the worst. And anyone who says they don’t mind waking up can just leave now. Some of us are employing desperate measures to get going every morning, and a manipulative/verbally abusive alarm clock sounds like just the thing. The makers of the CARROT To-Do
There are alarm clocks that wake you gently, and there are others that torture you to get you out of bed. The Carrot Alarm iOS app on the other hand will make you wake up so you can hang out with a GLaDOS clone. How GLaDOS-y is Carrot? She says she kills a kitten everytime you hit the snooze button. I’m not kidding. I hope she is.
Carrot’s clock is easy to use. It’s the alarm part that makes her special. And by special I mean evil. After greeting you with her cold voice, she’ll make you play a minigame before she turns the alarm off. But she has a good side too. As you use Carrot, you earn points that unlock additional sound bites and music.
Carrot is lurking at the iTunes App Store. Pay $0.99 (USD) to let her invade your life.

tim-E iPhone Alarm Clock
Posted in: Today's ChiliWaking up to go to work or school sucks. We all know it, and no one likes it. Except for your mean boss, he likes getting up and going to work because he’s mean. For the rest of us normal folk, getting out of bed is a chore – and if you have kids, you know firsthand that getting your kids up is an even bigger chore. This is where a cool alarm clock that’s on Kickstarter called tim-E comes in.
tim-E is an alarm clock that’s designed to dock your iPhone or iPod Touch into a robotic body. The screen of your iPhone or iPod becomes the face of the robot and it gives you several ways that you can be woken up. The device can wake you to a normal alarm in the form of buzz or using a song from your device, all the time dancing around and bobbing its head.
You can also be awakened to the weather report or the day’s traffic report. tim-E will also give you voice reminders to do things the next day before you go to sleep and can even wake you with a brainteaser to ensure you don’t fall back asleep. Of course, this is all done with a certain amount of attitude waking you with phrases like “Hello, lazybones! Time to get up!”
If you want your own robot alarm clock you’ll need to pledge $60(USD) or more. It’s definitely kind of annoying, which is exactly what you need from an alarm clock.
Sure, alarm clocks are a dime a dozen these days – and many people even use their mobile gadgets instead of a traditional alarm. But if you’re looking for a truly geektastic looking alarm clock, you’ll want to check out the Xronos.
This custom-built alarm clock has a unique style that would look perfect in a home game room or a geeky bedroom. It’s got a large LED dot-matrix display that can display time in green, red or orange, as well as in several fonts. Adding to its gamer style is the fact that it’s programmed and snoozed using real arcade buttons. The clock offers both 12- and 24-hours modes and can also speak the time or date, as well as provide audio feedback when setting the time. You can even set independent alarms for each day of the week.
In addition to offering alarm functionality, the Xronos offers a built in temperature sensor. And since it’s built on the open source Arduino platform, you can customize the programming to your liking. But the customization doesn’t end there. Alarm sounds are stored on a MicroSD card, you can change those if the 10 built-in sounds don’t entice you to get out of bed.
You can check out the Xronos clock in action in the video clip below:
If you like what you see, head on over to Len’s Digital’s Etsy shop, where you can order the Xronos clock for $200(USD).
A couple of years ago we saw a concept for a diabolical alarm clock. The idea was that a desperate late sleeper would willingly place a banknote on the clock, knowing that the clock will shred the money if he doesn’t wake up when the alarm goes off. And now the concept has been turned into reality, by a tinkerer named – I am not making this up – Rich Olson.
Rich made the clock using a SparkFun ClockIt and a USB-powered paper shredder. Rich is quite merciless too – the clock waits less than 10 seconds after the preset time before it starts shredding your money:
Note that destroying money is illegal in many countries. So if you’re going to make your own shredding alarm clock, why not tape your pinky finger to it instead? That’ll be way more effective at waking you up. Just kidding.

Flip Alarm Clock
Posted in: Today's ChiliWaking up in the mornings can be rather difficult to do, especially when you happen to have a sleepless night before that. Of course, it does not help that you have a highly stressful job to attend to each weekday. I suppose having the right kind of alarm clock might do the trick, as some of us tend to sleep through the ringing of the alarm. Enter the £28.99 Flip Alarm Clock, which as its name suggests, is flippin’ brilliant, coming in blue, lime, purple, and red colors.
The Flip Alarm Clock is so easy to use, that it does away with the need for complicated settings and control panels. Not only that, it comes in a lightweight and colorful form factor, making sure that things remain simple at all times. Sporting a big bold design, there will be a couple of sides to this timepiece, which have been embossed ON and OFF for obvious reasons, so all you need to do is flip it to the side that you want, as the bits and pieces within will then be able to tell just which way it is facing, and alert (or not) you as requested.

Korean developer Delight Room has contributed another weapon in the never ending battle to get us out of bed. Sleep If U Can is an alarm clock app for both iOS and Android devices. It has a mode that requires you to re-take a picture before it shuts down. The idea is for you to take a picture of something that’s far away from your bed, so you’ll have to get up to shut the alarm in the morning.
It’s actually smart enough to force you to take a picture of the correct object, so unless you have a similar object lying next to your bed, you’ll have to get up.
Sleep If U Can is available on both the iTunesApp Store and the Google Play store for $1.99 (USD). I wonder what would happen if you set a picture that you can never take again, like some random stranger or a cloud.
