AllWinner A20 SoC Is World’s First Dual-Core A7 Chip

AllWinner A20 SoC Is World’s First Dual Core A7 ChipWe have seen a company like AllWinner come out with a mini PC as well as Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich-powered device in the past, but this time around, it will not be something that you plug into your TV, as the AllWinner A20 SoC has been considered to be the first dual-core A7 chip released in the world. Just in case you were wondering, AllWinner has quite a presence in the Android-powered market in China, where they have pinned hopes on the A20 to continue pushing the affordability boundaries while touting to offer up to five times the energy efficiency as well as 50% of a power boost, in comparison to Cortex A8 chips.

To keep the dual-core A7 chip company, we have a dual-core Mali 400MP2 graphical unit chugging along, enabling the unit to play back 1080p video at 30 frames per second, in addition to capturing 720p videos at 60 frames per second. It will play nice with Android 4.1 and 4.2 Jelly Bean versions of the Android operating system, and has integrated an HDMI transmitter, LVDS interface, and TV decoder. When will we see devices that carry the A20 SoC? In due time, methinks.

Velocity Micro unveils tiny Edge Mini desktop, Cruz D610 and Q610 tablets

Velocity Micro was busy this December, and it’s not about to let up with CES right around the corner. At the forefront of its Las Vegas launches is the Edge Mini. While we’re sure some companies might take issue with the PC builder’s claims of having the world’s smallest desktop, there’s no denying that the extra-small Edge’s 4 square inches of surface area and 1.5-inch thickness let it slot easily into a home theater. A Core i3 won’t make the Edge Mini the most powerful tiny desktop, either, although its $499 asking price may not be an obstacle for those willing to buy the PC when it ships next week.

The tablet crowd also gets its fill with a pair of 10-inch Cruz tablets (pictured after the break). The D610 and Q610 respectively use dual- and quad-core, 1.5GHz Allwinner processors that help keep the starting price down to $199, a company spokesperson tells us. Velocity Micro expects both Cruz models to ship toward the end of March with Android 4.1 inside.

AllWinner A10 ARM-Powered Mini-PC Arrives

A number of Android-powered mini-PCs have arrived in the market recently. These PCs feature the bare minimum hardware and are small and light, hence the name mini-PC. Many of these are powered up with ARM chipsets, specifically the AllWinner A10 ARM A8 chipset.

Until now, most of these offerings feature up to 512 MB of RAM which is fairly adequate for a PC of this size. However, a new AllWinner A10-powered machine has taken the ante a bit high on the RAM offerings by featuring 1GB of DDR3 RAM. (more…)
