Interested in upgrading your eyeballs? Well, a team of DARPA-funded researchers led by Joseph Ford of UC San Diego recently published a proposal for a new type of telescopic contact lens in Optics Express. Designed for people with age-related macular degeneration, the lenses are only 1.17mm thick and can magnify images up to 2.8 times. Their layered construction admits light near the outer edge of the lens, bouncing it across a series of tiny aluminum mirrors before transmitting it to the back of the retina, kind of like the origami-optics lens. Telescopic sight can be toggled on and off by using a pair of 3D glasses to switch the polarization of the central part of the lens. It sounds promising, but the lenses — pictured after the break — currently have some obstacles, like gas-impermeable materials unsuitable for long-term wear and sub-par image quality. Eyebrows in the way? Singe them off with Adafruit’s DIY flame organ, debuting just in time for the holiday weekend. If fireworks aren’t enough to put the sizzle in your Independence Day party, all you need to light up your very own MIDI instrument are a few relays, solenoid valves, a digital music workstation (Adafruit recommends Livid Instruments’ BASE paired with Ableton Live and Pure Data) and a blatant disregard for your own mortality. The official tutorial is still in the works, but you can watch the flame organ blaze with a patriotic tune after the break. If you’re brave — or foolish — enough to attempt to build one of your own, just promise us that you won’t drink and DIY.

Planet Labs’ fleet of 28 tiny satellites will send back aerial shots for cheap

With the goal of capturing frequent snapshots that show the planet’s changes in real-time without breaking bank, California company Planet Labs has revealed its plan to launch 28 teensy satellites called “Doves” to space. Existing imaging satellites are extremely expensive to make and usually capture huge pictures that take days to send back. Each Dove, however, consists of relatively affordable 10-centimeter-wide Lego-like building blocks called CubeSats and will quickly beam back mid-res photos. The firm has yet to mention how many CubeSats will go into each Dove, but the two test satellites launched in April (see sample images they took at the source below) had three pieces each. If everything goes off without a hitch, the fleet could be orbiting the Earth at a low altitude as soon as December. Once operational, we can use the pictures they send to update online maps and monitor melting ice caps, deforestation, or even traffic jams.

Japanese robots Kirobo and Mirata set to be launched, literally

Don’t get excited about buying the new robots created by Japanese company Dentsu in conjunction with Toyota and the University of Tokyo — they won’t be hitting stores anytime soon. However, do get excited that one of them, namely the white-helmeted droid Kirobo (shown above, left), will actually be launched into orbit as part of a Japan Space Agency mission to the ISS on August 4th. In fact, he and his backup Mirata were endowed with voice recognition, natural language processing, speed synthesis, realistic body language and facial recognition for that very reason. They’ll be participating in the “world’s first conversational experiment” between people and robots in space, while also mixing it up with kids on earth with educational activities. Hopefully, the astronauts won’t give Kirobo any HAL 9000-like control of the station, though the cute ‘bots seem malice-free, saying they “wanted to create a future where humans and robots live together and get along.” Check it out for yourself in the video after the break.

Inductees to 2013 Internet Hall of Fame revealed, class includes 32 new members

Over the course of the past 12 months, the internet has witnessed negotiations between big-name sites, taken us inside the minds of social media innovators, and even given us a front row seat to what could be the biggest privacy-related story of the decade. Thus, it should come as no surprise that the Internet Society decided to debut its Internet Hall of Fame in April of last year, bringing on influential people like Vint Cerf and Al Gore as part of the first set of inductees. Now, it’s time for the Class of 2013 to shine, one which ushers in 32 new members who will join the Father of the Internet and former US Vice President in the list of illustrious names “instrumental in the early design and development” of the web.

This year’s individuals include the late Aaron Swartz under the Innovators category and more than 30 others spread across the Pioneer Circles and Global Connectors sections. President and CEO of Internet Society, Lynn St. Amour, tells us this is a way to celebrate the accomplishments of these visionaries, adding that she and her organization are always working with the utopian belief of everyone wanting to “participate fully in making the internet a platform that will continue to encourage innovation, communication, commerce, and social interaction for the benefit of people all around the world.” The 2013 Hall of Fame ceremony’s due to take place August 3rd in Berlin, Germany, but since we have the inductee list in the PR after the break, that means you won’t have to wait until then to find out who made it in.

Mad scientists turn roaches into cyborgs, control them with Kinect, laugh at nature

We’d love to tell you that the researchers at North Carolina State University aren’t monsters who implant circuits on living things so that those living things do their bidding, but we’d be lying. They totally do that, roaches are their primary victim, and now they’re using Microsoft’s Kinect to help them control the insects. Sure, why not!

As Dr. Alper Bozkurt of NCSU says in today’s new release, “Our goal is to be able to guide these roaches as efficiently as possible, and our work with Kinect is helping us do that.” Apparently the researchers are employing Kinect for data collection as well, determining how effectively the cyborg survivors respond to electrical impulse-motivated control. They say the end goal is to use the partially mechanized arthropods to, “explore and map disaster sites.” For now, there’s some very weird stuff happening in North Carolina. The Engadget Show 44: Education with Google, OLPC, Code.org, LeapFrog, SparkFun, Adafruit and more

It’s time to rethink the way our children learn. It’s all a bit overwhelming, attempting to restructure the age-old classroom model, particularly in a system as bogged down in bureaucratic red tape as education. This month, however, we packed up our things and toured the country to find out how educational institutions are adopting new models to help reinvent the learning process — rather than sitting idly by, waiting for the system to change around them. Naturally, technology is playing a huge role in that shift, moving from models of teaching to models of learning, where students can explore, express themselves and learn at their own speed.

We kick things off in Chicago, where Jackie Moore, a former systems programmer, is teaching inner city students how to build robots in a shopping mall basement at LevelUP. Next up, we head Miami and California, to see how technologies like the iPad, Google Chromebook and One Laptop Per Child’s XO laptop are being implemented in three schools, including interviews with educators, students, OLPC CEO Rodrigo Halaby and Google director of product management, Rajen Sheth. We’ll also talk to component retailers SparkFun and Adafruit about the initiatives those companies have implemented to help kids learn electronics at an early age, and then we sit down with American Museum of Natural History president, Ellen Futter, to discuss the ways the New York City institution is redefining itself for the 21st century.

We’ve also got an interview with Ali Partovi, a serial entrepreneur, who is working to make computer science an essential part of the elementary-level STEM program, through Code.org. Richard Culatta, the acting director of the US Department of Education’s Office of Educational Technology discusses how devices can help target the learning process for individual students and LeapFrog CEO John Barbour tells us how his company is rethinking the educational toy. All that plus prognostications from John Roderick and some really sweet moose dioramas can be yours to enjoy after the break.

Astronomers find three planets in Gliese 667C's habitable zone

Astronomers have a good day when they detect one planet inside a star system’s habitable zone. A mostly European team of researchers must be giddy, then, as it just found three of those ideally located planets around Gliese 667C. The group has combined existing observations from the ESO’s Very Large Telescope with new HARPS telescope data to spot the trio of super-Earths, all of which could theoretically support liquid water. As long as the discovery holds up, it may have a big impact on exoplanetary research: it shows both that three super-Earths can exist in one system and that more than one survivable planet can orbit a low-mass star. We can only do so much with the findings when Gliese 667C is 22 light-years away, but it’s good to learn that space could be more human-friendly than we once thought.
