As if there weren’t enough real jellyfish around to trigger our thalassophobia, researchers at Virginia Tech have created Cryo — an eight-armed autonomous robot that mimics jelly movement with the help of a flexible silicone hat. The man-sized jellybot altogether dwarfs previous efforts, hence the upgrade from small tank to swimming pool for mock field tests. And unlike the passively propelled bots we’ve seen recently, Cryo runs on batteries, with the researchers hoping to better replicate the energy-efficient nature of jelly movement to eventually increase Cryo’s charge cycle to months instead of hours. That’s also the reason these robotic jellyfish are getting bigger — because the larger they are, the further they can go. Potential uses include ocean monitoring and perhaps clearing oil spills, but the US Navy, which is funding the work, sees an opportunity to recruit jellies for underwater surveillance — a job the researchers say is suited to their natural-looking disguise. NOvA neutrino detector captures cosmic rays in 3D, aims to unlock the mysteries of the universe

All apologies accepted if you mistook that image above as cover art for Daft Punk’s new album — it’s not (although the duo should consider it.). That Tron-ish, equalizer-like graphic is actually a 3D representation of particle activity left behind by cosmic rays interacting within NOvA, the Department of Energy’s under construction neutrino detector. It’s the first such visual record made possible by the University of Minnesota-operated facility that, when completed, will extend for more than 200 feet underground in an area near the Canadian border and endure regular bombardment by a controlled stream of neutrinos. Beyond its obvious visual appeal, data like this should give physicists at the DOE’s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory insight into the nature of neutrinos (some of which are said to have been issued from the Big Bang) and, by extension, the origins of our ever-expanding universe. For now, though, the project’s still in the baby steps phase — only 12 feet of the detector (the currently operational portion) has been successfully built out — so the reality-shattering, scientific epiphanies will have to wait. Until then, it’s all still life as we safely know it.

Lockheed Martin's technology hub brings startups closer to government needs

Wondering who would be the first to concoct a Kickstarter for governmental wishes? We suppose it’s Lockheed Martin. Today, the aforementioned outfit has launched an initiative “aimed at expanding its collaboration with Silicon Valley companies to meet the diverse technology needs of the federal government.” Called the Lockheed Martin Silicon Valley Alliance, the hub will reportedly “provide the federal government with greater visibility into innovative technology solutions developed locally,” even going so far as to suggest that a game developer could use their resources in order to improve the realism of a military simulation system. It sounds as if Lockheed will end up being the middleman between aspiring companies and entities like the Department of Defense and NASA, essentially ensuring that whatever is built meets federal requirements. Those interested in venturing down such a rabbit hole can give the source link a look, but as always, we’d caution you to register at your own risk.

DIY theremin goggles marries the art of noise with steampunk style

Sometimes annoying just isn’t annoying enough. For DIY enthusiast and self-described “maker of awesome” Sarah Petkus, the incentive to irk was merely a happy by-product of her latest goggle design. The steampunk-ish effort, chronicled on Petkus’ blog Robotic Arts, combines some artfully arranged scrap metals with an integrated optical theremin that lets the wearer manipulate an incredibly unpleasant tone just by waving their hands and adjusting the amount of light fed into the sensors. Since the volume control and speaker are housed inside the eyepieces, the goggles are little more than a head-mounted accessory. But that shouldn’t stop cosplay types (or sociopaths) from strapping on a set and tweaking the nerves of unfortunate passers-by. That’s if Petkus gets around to selling the “eyewear.” For the public’s sake, we hope this inventive mod remains a one-off. Super Mario Spacetime Organ lets you remix the plumber’s world

The game may be pushing 30, but we get the sneaking feeling that the world has only scratched the surface of the original Super Mario Bros’ gameplay potential. Chris Novello certainly offers a fairly compelling case for this, in the form of the Super Mario Spacetime organ, a strange and wonderful concoction that utilizes a homebrewed Illucia patchbay and the lovely Madrona Soundplane music controller, which let him play the Mushroom Kingdom like a musical instrument. Watch the video below as he manipulates the RAM to make Mario fly and jumps through the “Super Mario time machine” on the Soundplane’s x-axis. It’s not the most musical thing in the world, and certainly not for those who are sensitive to flickering chaos, but it does put those old Game Genies to shame. It also serves as a pretty novel use for a couple of rubber band balls.

Recyclable organic solar cells: a clean fuel future made possible by trees

You don’t have to know Shel Silverstein to know that trees are exceptionally giving. They’re responsible for our homes, paper, air, furniture and, now, energy — the “clean” kind, that is. Researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology and Purdue University have jointly devised a patent-pending method to build organic solar cells using plant-derived substrates. Known as cellulose nanocrystal substrates (or CNC), these solar cells benefit from being truly disposable, eliminating the waste that results from the use of alternative materials like petroleum or glass. The CNC-made cells are not only transparent enough to allow light to pass into an embedded semiconductor, but they also dissolve when submerged into water, thus earning the esteemed recyclable distinction.

Although this is undoubtedly a breakthrough for clean energy tech, it’s by no means a near-future reality. Apparently, current cells can only yield a 2.7-percent conversion efficiency rate, which falls far below the 10-percent threshold met by rival fabrication methods (i.e., petroleum and glass). So, there’s still significant work to be done before the team can improve production and achieve parity with those less “recyclable” options. Until that time, consider this a comforting reassurance that a clean fuel era is well within reach.

The team at Breakfast NY never leaves us hungry when it merges the digital and physical worlds — and this time it’s created something that hits it out of the park for the start of this year’s US baseball season. Here at the Major League Baseball Fan Cave in downtown NYC, the team has just unveiled its space program-inspired Mission Control Center. As creative director and co-founder Andrew Zolty explained, “the idea is try and pull in pretty much everything you can possibly imagine that’s going on during the 2013 MLB season, and do it in a way that feels reminiscent of NASA’s control room: Mission Control.”

The 20-foot-long installation houses two sets of 15 small screens (roughly eight inches each), broken up in the middle (one side for the American League teams and the other for the National League teams) by a large LCD and a consumer-grade webcam. Below the screens you’ll notice a plethora of switches with LEDs, info lights and a trio of odometers. Both sides feature three rows of five screens, each pertaining to one of the 30 MLB teams and their stadiums. At the flick of a switch, the screens display real-time connected data like recent Foursquare check-ins, weather, Facebook likes and Instagrams, along with team stats and facts and more for each individual stadium at once.

Those smaller screens, by the way, are actually physically modded Android-tablets — unfortunately, Breakfast wasn’t at liberty to tell us exactly which kind they are. Essentially, they are all running custom apps, with support from MLB.TV to pull real-time, live streams from each stadium in the league. In total, we’re told that 13 APIs and seven languages of software work in conjunction to makeup the Control Center. The setup will also allow players visiting the Cave to have live chats with with roughly 10 fans at a time who participate from MLB’s site (sort of like Google+) — of course, the chats allow an essentially unlimited number of spectators. AIA crowdfunds a space program ad that would run in front of Star Trek (video)

Aerospace industry wants a NASA ad in front of Star Trek, prefers real space travel video

As a federal agency, NASA can’t run commercials — a problem both for rallying broader public support and fostering the next generation of astronauts. The Aerospace Industries Association has both cultural and very practical reasons for improving that public awareness, so it’s taking the unusual step of crowdfunding an ad purchase to get the American space program in front of as many eyes as possible. The project would cut a 30-second version of NASA’s We Are the Explorers promo (after the break), minus the administration’s official endorsement, and run it in at least 50 major movie theaters for eight weeks following the launch of Star Trek Into Darkness on May 17th. The crowdfunding is ostensibly to demonstrate our collective love of space, and would directly translate any money raised beyond the $33,000 goal into ads for more theaters. A cynical industry move? Maybe — but we won’t build starships without a public that’s interested in seeing them beyond movie screens, which makes the ad a noble enough cause in our minds.
