Chalk one up for atomic force microscopy. As detailed in a paper published recently in the journal Science, researchers in China have used the imaging technique (as opposed to scanning tunnelling microscopy) to capture an image of a hydrogen bond for the very first time. As io9 explains, hydrogen bonding is common in nature — responsible for the properties of water and the link between the two strands of DNA’s double helix — and it’s something that chemists have long been able to visualize, albeit only on a theoretical level. According to Chemistry World, while there remains much to learn about the nature of hydrogen bonds, the researchers hope that this latest development will help lead to atomic force microscopy (or AFM) being used as a routine tool to examine molecules and offer a clearer picture of them.

The New York Public Library recently discovered a treasure trove of video games in its archives created by psychedelic evangelist Timothy Leary. Over 375 floppies (talk about flashbacks) containing a “dozen or so” games developed by the LSD-advocate in the ’80s — some are playable via emulation — are now on display in the library’s rare books and manuscripts division, according to The New York Times. The good doctor’s digital works had a self-help bend to them, advocating self-improvement by interactive means as opposed to pharmaceuticals, and apparently recreational drugs as well. If you fancy yourself a cyberpunk, Leary also had an in-progress project based on William Gibson’s Neuromancer, replete with writing by William S. Burroughs and a soundtrack by Devo. He had more than just prototypes, too: His Mind Mirror was commercially released in 1985 and sold 65,000 copies for publisher Electronic Arts. Orbital Sciences becomes second private firm to resupply the ISS

More than four years after winning a contract (along with Space X) to resupply the International Space Station, Orbital Sciences has finally docked its Cygnus capsule with the space outpost. The achievement makes it the second private outfit to have run a resupply mission to the station, with Musk and Co. beating them to the punch last October. Achieving the rendezvous with the ISS didn’t go without a hitch, however: a data format bug delayed the planned September 22nd berthing until a software fix was applied. Once Monday morning rolls around, the craft’s hatch will be opened to reach 1,300 pounds worth of supplies, which include clothing, food and student experiments. In 30 days’ time, the cargo vessel will detach and head for a destructive reentry over the Pacific Ocean.

International science panel 95% sure global warming is humans fault, urges 'substantial and sustained' greenhouse gas reduction

Global warming is almost certainly the fault of human beings, a new report by the United Nations climate panel states. It offers 95 percent certainty of that assertion, based on “some 2,500 pages of text and…millions of observations and over 2 million gigabytes of numerical data from climate model simulations,” and it cites over 9,200 scientific papers (75 percent of which are from the last three years). The report also suggests “substantial and sustained” efforts to reduce greenhouse gas production; greenhouse gases (everything from water vapor to nitrous oxide) are the primary cause of the greenhouse effect, which destroys the Earth’s protective ozone layer.

Carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide are the main culprits causing the Earth’s ozone to deteriorate. CO2 levels have risen by 40 percent “since pre-industrial times,” much of which was absorbed by the Earth’s oceans (about 30 percent), resulting in rising acidity levels. Moreover, due to that absorption, the oceans — specifically the upper ocean (0 to 700 meters) — have been warming since the 1870s.

As one might expect, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (the UN’s climate change panel) suggests a greener lifestyle worldwide to help roll back the compound effects of global warming. A Tesla for each of us, perhaps? But even if we all go super green and massively cut back on greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, it sounds like humanity won’t see the positive for quite some time. “As a result of our past, present and expected future emissions of CO2, we are committed to climate change, and effects will persist for many centuries even if emissions of CO2 stop,” co-chair Thomas Stocker says.

NASA’s Curiosity finds two percent of Martian soil is composed of water

We already knew Mars was blanketed in ancient riverbeds, which points to the existence of water in the distant past. What we didn’t know, however, is that H2O exists on Mars in the here and now — albeit embedded in Martian soil. A paper recently published in the journal Science revealed that as much as two percent of dirt from the Red Planet contains the precious liquid. The Curiosity rover gathered samples of the sand from the “Rocknest” area near the Gale Crater back in August of 2012 and delivered it to the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument inside its belly. After heating the sample to around 835 Celsius, SAM was able to detect a surprising amount of carbonate materials, which are formed in the presence of water.

Laurie Leshin, dean of science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the study’s lead author said the findings are conclusive: “If you took about a cubic foot of the dirt and heated it up, you’d get a couple of pints of water out of that — a couple of water bottles’ worth that you would take to the gym.” Another SAM discovery is a mineral called perchlorate that could interfere with thyroid functions if ingested. Still, if we could work around that, the findings could prove tremendously useful for future Mars explorers. “When we send people,” Leshin said in the paper, “they could scoop up the soil anywhere on the surface, heat it just a bit, and obtain water.” We’re likely years away from having fishing expeditions in Mars, of course, but this does soften the blow about the possible lack of life.

Previously, free rein to explore the labyrinthine laboratory that is CERN has been granted only to the lucky, or those with four degrees and an aptitude for finding theoretical particles. That changes today, however, as anyone can now explore the home of the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva, Switzerland through Google Street View. All the imagery was captured back in 2011, but it’s finally been stitched together, allowing you to wander freely around the site of the famous particle accelerator and learn a little about its experiments. Texas A&M researchers concoct nanoparticles to soak up crude oil spills

The 2010 Deepwater Horizon may be forgotten to many, but remnants of its destruction still remain in the Gulf of Mexico. Mercifully, it appears that researchers at Texas A&M University “have developed a non-toxic sequestering agent-iron oxide nanoparticles coated in a polymer mesh that can hold up to 10 times their weight in crude oil.” In layman’s terms, they’ve engineered a material that can safely soak up oil. As the story goes, the nanoparticles “consist of an iron oxide core surrounded by a shell of polymeric material,” with the goal being to soak up leftover oil that isn’t captured using conventional mechanical means. The next step? Creating an enhanced version that’s biodegradable; as it stands, the existing particles could pose a threat if not collected once they’ve accomplished their duties.

86,000 square miles of Great Britain meticulously recreated in Minecraft

There are those with free time, and then there’s Joseph Braybrook. This fine bloke managed to recreate some 86,000 square miles of Great Britain within the Minecraft universe, and moreover, it took but a fortnight to concoct. Further justifying his work as more than goofing off, he used Ordnance Survey terrain data in the world’s construction, leading Graham Dunlop, OS Innovation Lab Manager, to proclaim the following: “We think we may have created the largest Minecraft world ever built based on real-world data.” The new universe contains over 22 billion Minecraft blocks, and once players have downloaded the 3.6GB file, they’re free to build at will. Just don’t go planting any US flags — that’s just downright rude.

Remember Bot & Dolly’s awesome Kinetisphere from Google I/O 2012? Today the San Francisco-based design and engineering studio released Box, a film of the first ever synchronized live performance featuring projected 3D computer graphics, robots and actors. Imagine two Kuka industrial robots moving walls around and a projector displaying CG onto them in complete sync. Add a second projector aimed at the floor. Now introduce an actor and capture the entire scene with a 4K camera mounted on a third Kuka robot in sync with the other two. The result is a mind-blowing experience that takes CG into the real world. Flat walls transform in to 3D cubes, objects levitate and teleport — it’s magic.

In fact, it’s even more impressive in person. The company believes that “this methodology has tremendous potential to radically transform theatrical presentations”. We briefly talked with Tarik Abdel-Gawad, Creative & Technical Director and Bradley G Munkowitz, Design Director (of Tron fame) about the technology behind the performance. The project uses two IRIS and one SCOUT robotic motion control platforms (based on Kuka robots) plus two powerful high-resolution projectors. Bot & Dolly’s in-house software, which integrates with Autodesk‘s Maya, is used to synchronize and control the performance. As such, the work serves “as both an artistic statement and technical demonstration.” See the video for yourself after the break.
