Despite what the economists have told you, not every part of the world is doing well, and despite that, some of us do want to own a tablet for us to while our time away. Well, Amazon has heeded that call, and just in case you are unable to purchase one of their recently announced higher end Kindle Fire HDX models with LTE connectivity, you might want to settle for something which is pretty proficient at what it does best without burning too large a hole in your pocket along the way. We are referring to the all new $139 Kindle Fire HD, where it will arrive in a slimmer as well as lighter form factor amongst other features.

The new Kindle Fire HD will also provide you with access to the exclusive benefits of the Amazon ecosystem, where among it will include the likes of Prime Instant Video, Kindle Owners’ Lending Library, Kindle MatchBook, AutoRip, and the world’s leading digital catalog with over 27 million movies, TV shows, songs, apps, games, books, audiobooks, and magazines.

Despite the relatively affordable price in comparison to its rivals, the Kindle Fire HD is not one that comes with less inferior hardware. No sir, the display itself, while not Full HD, delivers 1280 x 800 resolution and 216 pixels per inch, while a dual-core 1.5 GHz processor gets things done in a jiffy. Your ears too, will definitely be able to appreciate the dual stereo speakers with Dolby Digital Plus audio, where all of that has been crammed into a new slim chassis so that it resembles that of the new Kindle Fire HDX.

With dual-band Wi-Fi, it should not be an issue for you to experience fast streaming, downloads, and web browsing, while the operating system which the Kindle Fire HD runs on would be Fire OS 3.0 “Mojito” that will arrive with hundreds of new and upgraded features, platform updates, and Amazon-exclusive services. Amazon has already started to take pre-orders for the device, and shipping for the Kindle Fire HD will begin this October 2nd onward.

It’s no surprise, of course, that the Kindle Fire HDX was the thing Amazon wanted to shout about from the Seattle mountaintops today. But Jeff Bezos had another little surprise up his impeccably tailored sleeves — a surprise that makes the $229 HDX look downright extravagant. A warm (if decidedly overcast) Pacific Northwest welcome to the new Fire HD. Well, “new” is perhaps not entirely accurate. This Kindle shares a lot with its predecessor, though there are some notable changes. Namely, the body. See, if we’re strictly talking form factor here, this guy is a dead ringer for the 7-inch HDX. Inside, however, you’ll find last-gen processing power: a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, and on the front, the same old 1,280 x 800 display. Still, not too shabby for $139 — that’s $60 less than the last version cost moments before this post went up.

That price also gets you access to Fire OS 3.0, aka “Mojito,” Amazon’s latest sugary rum of an operating system. Naturally, some of the new features just won’t work on this hardware — things like Mayday, which requires a microphone for use. Like the HDX, this slate plays nicely with those neat new Origami covers. You can pre-order one right this second, but you’ll have to hang on until October 2nd before it actually starts shipping.

One of Amazon’s subtler but potentially valuable promises for the Kindle Fire HD was its Kindle FreeTime mode — a fenced-off world that would give kids a simple place to play and their parents the confidence to step away for a few precious minutes. It wasn’t part of the initial launch, but a new update to the 7-inch model is rolling FreeTime into Amazon’s latest tablet. The upgrade gives as much flexibility as Amazon promised, letting adults introduce filters as well as cap the time their children spend with different kinds of content. Most of the remaining updates pertain to general fixes; that said, we imagine that most parents won’t mind the narrow focus once they know Junior can’t watch Kill Bill.

We were worried there, for a minute. After code explorers found that Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD 7-inch had both a locked bootloader and extra security measures, there was a brief concern that the pseudo-Android tablet might be very tough to hack. As it turns out, there was no reason to lose faith. Hashcode, Justin Case, Reverend Kyle and Sparklym3 from the XDA and RootzWiki forums have successfully rooted the smaller Kindle Fire HD in a repeatable form, giving anyone courageous enough to load ADB the control they want over the tablet they bought. Just remember the usual caveats if you choose to dive in: while the root isn’t a lengthy process, as you’ll see in the video after the break, there’s still the ever-present risk of bricking the device should something go wrong. Having seen what can be done with the original Kindle Fire after a little tinkering, we’re intrigued as to what happens with its more capable sequel.

Sure, you can certainly snag one of those shiny new Amazon slates straight from the source, but if that famed, speedy shipping isn’t your style, then a trip to the nearest Staples would be recommended. The “That Was Easy” retailer announced earlier it’s now inviting all parties interested in picking up an all-new, 7-inch Kindle Fire HD, a revamped Kindle Fire or that $69 Kindle to visit its brick-and-mortar stores — where, starting today, folks will be able to buy any of the aforementioned devices. While these Kindles can be found listed on the Staples website (see below), the company didn’t mention whether it actually plans to sell them online — perhaps they’re just there in case you’re in need of a little bit of guidance.
