Amazon takes Maps API out of beta, cautiously steps out of Google’s shadow

If Amazon has its way, Google Maps on your Kindle Fire won’t be the default option for much longer. Back in September, the online retail giant introduced a beta version of its Amazon Maps API to see if it could go the Apple route by fleshing out its own maps platform. Now it’s ready to take the API out of beta after several months of testing and a lot of developer interest — Hipmunk, Evernote, Trulia and Zillow have already integrated it into their Kindle Fire apps. The API currently features interactive maps and customized overlays, and is now a part of the Amazon Mobile App SDK. It’s early days yet for the mapping service and we’re sure it doesn’t have the bells and whistles of the one from Mountain View, but this does mean a further step toward differentiation from the Big Goog. Let’s just hope this turns out better than iOS6 Maps and no one comes to regret it.

Amazon Appstore for Android rolls out in Japan

The Land of the Rising Sun has had its first taste of the Amazon Appstore for Android, which means that its customers based in Japanese (and who are able to read Japanese in that part of the world, of course) are now able to gain access to a slew of apps as well as games on their Android-powered device – be it smartphones or tablets. Today’s announcement would deliver features such as localized content and a localized mobile store, the hugely popular Amazon Appstore features like the “Free App of the Day”, and the ability to purchase an app or game just once, followed by enjoying it across a variety of Android-powered devices including Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD tablets.

Not only that, Amazon marches onward, developing a valuable marketplace so that developers are able to build, market and monetize apps and games, while offering access to the Amazon Web Service platform, in addition to new audience engagement features alongside GameCircle APIs, awareness-building programs like Free App of the Day, and In-App Purchasing and Subscriptions.

Amazon Appstore continues Amazon's bid for global dominance with expansion into Japan

Move over various European countries — Japan’s the latest region to receive Amazon’s Android “Appstore” (no, that isn’t a word). The store went live today in Japan, bringing with it all you’ve come to expect from Amazon’s virtual mobile store: Angry Birds, Facebook, and much, much more. Also in-tow is Amazon’s “Free App of the Day” initiative, and a variety of unique app selections from Japan-specific developers like Square Enix and NTT Docomo. The Japanese version of the Appstore features the same cross-device functionality found in other regions, meaning one app purchase suffices for all your Android devices. Amazon isn’t saying if any major, expected apps are missing from the store, and our Japanese isn’t so hot, so we’d appreciate you letting us know if you spot any major whiffs in the selection department.

Amazon Appstore hits Japan

Amazon’s Appstore has gone live in Japan, giving Japanese users the chance to download Android apps to their smartphones, tablets, and new Kindles. The store will include the same apps as available elsewhere in the world, as well as Japan-specific titles from regional carriers and developers.

As before, the WhisperSync service will mean that apps bought on one device can be downloaded and used on other devices logged into the same Amazon Appstore account. There’s also 1-Click payment support and a Free App of the Day.

Developers, meanwhile, will be able to use Amazon’s GameCircle system, with leaderboards and social gaming support, as well as in-app purchasing. There’s also a subscriptions option for digital magazines and newspapers.

Amazon put the Kindle Fire up for preorder in Japan for the first time back in October, as well as the Kindle Fire HD and the Kindle Paperwhite. It also added a fair sized chunk of Japanese-language content: 50,000 Japanese-language ebooks, plus over 15,000 manga titles.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: November 27, 2012

Welcome to Tuesday evening everyone! This afternoon we heard that Apple’s Richard Williamson has been ousted in an iOS Maps switch-up, while Nintendo confirmed the rumored Wii Mini – but it’s only coming to Canada and won’t have Internet capabilities. Microsoft has sold 40 million Windows 8 licenses since the OS launched last month, and even managed to sell 750,000 Xbox 360s during the week of Black Friday, despite the fact that the console is viewed as aging hardware by many.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2012 turned out to be the best ones ever for Amazon’s Kindle family of devices, and Evernote Clearly has added text-to-speech for its premium members, which is a pretty awesome new feature if you ask us. Gmail has added support for 10GB attachments so long as those attachments are stored in your Google Drive account, and Outlook.com was able to boast 25 million users today, with Microsoft telling us that an Android app is on the way.

We heard today that Foxconn might be manufacturing Microsoft’s rumored Surface phone, and Apple reassured everyone today that the new iMac is still on track to launch later this month (November 30 to be exact, which is right around the corner). Cyber Monday sales topped a whopping $2 billion this year, and we learned that Nintendo TVii will be launching in Japan on December 8, which leads us to believe that it won’t be long before the service is available in the US and Europe.

HP and Nomadix have settled their patent lawsuit, while Nintendo launched new nostalgia-fueled DLC for New Super Mario Bros. 2. Fans are petitioning Rockstar to release Grand Theft Auto V on PC, and indie hit Super Hexagon is now available on Steam. Microsoft might be opening its first retail store in Europe as early as next year, the NYPD is building a database of calls made with stolen phones, and Rdio has been updated on iOS and Android with an entirely new UI.

Finally tonight, we have a couple of reviews for you to check out. Vincent Nguyen delivered his review of the new Jawbone UP earlier today, while Chris Burns takes on Hamilton’s Great Adventure THD for some mobile gaming goodness. That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, enjoy the rest of your night folks!

Foxconn reportedly making Microsoft’s Surface phone

With Windows Phone 8 getting so much attention around the Internet, it’s only natural that rumors of a Microsoft-branded smartphone are beginning to pop up as well. We heard about a Microsoft smartphone earlier this month, but now the phone has crept its way back into headlines, with DigiTimes reporting that infamous manufacturer Foxconn will be making the new device. The phone will apparently be set to ship in mid-2013, so if it actually exists, it may not be much longer before we get official confirmation from Microsoft.

With Surface marking Microsoft’s first foray into the tablet space, it isn’t hard to imagine the company making the jump to smartphones too. Windows Phone 8 on a Surface-branded smartphone seems like something too appealing for Microsoft to resist, so we wouldn’t be all that surprised to learn this rumor is true. Specifically, Foxconn International Holding is said to be putting this phone together, but neither it nor its parent company, Foxconn Electronics, would comment on the rumor.

In an interesting twist, Foxconn International Holding is said to be manufacturing an Amazon phone as well. We heard rumors of an Amazon phone earlier this year before the company unveiled the Kindle Paperwhite and the Kindle Fire HD, but Amazon was quick to quash those whispers. Maybe Amazon was simply lying so it could reveal such a device at a later date?

The report from DigiTimes doesn’t mention anything about technical specifications, but it does say that both phones should be shipping in mid-2013. It also claims that initial shipments of both devices will be limited, but other than that, we’ve got nothing else to share. Looks like this is another one to toss on the ever-growing rumors pile until either Amazon or Microsoft share some official details. Stay tuned.

Amazon boasts “best ever” Black Friday and Cyber Monday for Kindle family

Amazon had some pretty sweet deals going on all weekend long, starting on Black Friday and ending on Cyber Monday. One of the best that we found on Amazon’s products was the $130 Kindle Fire deal — down $30 from its original price. The company boasts that “Cyber Monday 2012 was the biggest day ever for Kindle sales worldwide.”

Collectively, Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2012 “were the best ever for the Kindle family.” The company had more than doubled last year’s sales numbers, and while they don’t disclose any specific figures, it’s not too hard to believe. The $130 Kindle Fire deal was simply too good to pass up for a lot of people.

Amazon did release a couple of statistics and facts that might prove interesting for you. First of all, the top four spots on the worldwide Amazon best sellers list are Kindle ereaders and tablets. Also, Amazon claims the Kindle Fire HD to be the most gifted and most wished for product on Amazon since its launch.

Sadly, the Kindle Fire deal is over, and you’ll have to go back to paying at least $160 for the last-generation tablet, but that’s still a decent price. However, for just a bit more cash, you can pick up the newer Kindle Fire HD for only $200. That’s probably a better bet if you’re wanting to get the latest and greatest.

Microsoft And Amazon Smartphones Coming?

It was rumored that Microsoft might be looking into churning out additional hardware, especially after they have had done a pretty good job with the Windows RT tablet, although sales of that tablet seemed to fall short of Microsoft’s expectations. Having said that, the new hardware that Microsoft could possibly work on is unsurprisingly, a Windows Phone 8-powered device, as this segment of the market does seem to offer more promise compared to the tablet niche. It would seem that should a Windows Phone 8 handset from Microsoft surface (heh, sorry about that, I could not resist the pun), it would carry a similar Surface branding.

The Wall Street Journal, as we mentioned earlier, did say that Microsoft is working with Foxconn to realize a smartphone that would fall under the 4” or 5” screen size category, not to mention the possibility of Amazon also working with Foxconn for a smartphone that they can call their very own. Well, what will we have next from Amazon and Microsoft? Only time will tell.

Amazon declares ‘best ever’ Black Friday and Cyber Monday for Kindle family

Pick up a holiday Kindle over the weekend? According to today’s Amazon announcement, the chances are pretty good that you did. The mega-retailer sent out a note today calling Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2012 “the best ever for the Kindle family.” In fact, Monday was reportedly the biggest day ever for worldwide Kindle sales, thanks in part to a sale on the Fire. Amazon says it has “more than double[d]” last year’s numbers. The line, which currently includes the entry-level Kindle, the Paperwhite and the Fire, among others, has also been eating up a good chunk of the site’s worldwide best seller spots. Let’s Just Assume Amazon Has Sold, Like, Eight Kindles

There’s no doubt that Amazon sells a lot of Kindles; it’s the most popular product on a site that sells many very popular things. But we’re five years into the Kindle Age, and we still don’t have a single firm sales number to pin on them. Come on, guys! Let us quantify how impressed we are! More »
