Amazon deal brings Warner TV shows including Fringe, The West Wing to Prime Instant Video exclusively

The battle between Amazon’s Prime Instant Video and Netflix Watch Instantly continues to heat up, with Amazon following up a slew of rollouts on new devices like the Xbox 360 and the addition of a queue by locking up some exclusive TV content from Warner Bros. According to the press release (included after the break) Amazon’s agreement means episodes of Fringe and The West Wing will be “On Prime Instant Video First” and not on other streaming services for the summer. Stats show and Netflix has repeatedly indicated that subscribers view more TV content than movies on these types of services so content exclusives may become even more important differentiators. Other shows specifically named include Dark Blue, Alcatraz and The Whole Truth, hit up the Prime site to see any other less prominent names that may have escaped mention.

Grace Digital Matchstick targets Amazon’s tablet

The world of tablets can be said to be divided into two camps – one that is powered by the iOS operating system from Apple, while the other will run on the Android operating system from Google. However, there is a niche market which is slightly different – those that make up the Nooks and the Amazons out there. Here we are with a rare moment when there is an accessory which was released just for the Amazon’s 7″ tablet. Calling it the MatchStick, this Grace Digital offering will throw in robust stereo sound to Netflix, Pandora Internet radio, audio books as well as the rest of the multimedia capabilities that the Kindle Fire is able to offer.

Basically, the Grace Digital MatchStick speaker dock for the Kindle Fire is their latest creation which is said to offer millions of Kindle Fire users with a device-specific dock specially for their Amazon tablet. It is available over at Amazon.com at the moment, and it will begin to ship as soon as you place your order.

It its previous life, the MatchStick speaker dock was known as the FireDock, and it was specially engineered for Amazon’s Kindle Fire. The MatchStick will come with the unique USB port, headphone jack and power button. All of those are located right at the bottom of the tablet for easy and convenient access. It must be said that the majority of universal 3.5mm speaker docks will not charge devices while in use, but the MatchStick speaker dock for Kindle Fire does not follow convention, charging while on AC power, in addition to the optional (which is sold separately) lithium-ion battery-pack that paves the way for maximum portability.

It was specially and exclusively sized for the Kindle Fire only, where the rotating cradle is capable of holding the 7″ tablet in a secure manner, while accommodating horizontal and vertical viewing angles.

What If Amazon Did Yesterday Shipping? [Video]

Recent news suggests that Amazon is planning to launch same-day shipping, a first for online retail and perhaps the end of local stores as we know them. But what if Amazon worked out how to bend physics and developed yesterday shipping? More »

Grace Digital’s MatchStick speaker dock for the Kindle Fire hits Amazon

Grace Digital's MatchStick Kindle Fire speaker dock hits Amazon

We heard back in March that Grace Digital’s FireDock for the Kindle Fire would be available in July, and it turns out that was at least partly true. The device is now shipping from Amazon (at a $30 discount of its $130 list price), but it’s been rebranded with the even more Kindle-esque name of MatchStick. It remains unchanged otherwise, though, packing the same rotating cradle designed specifically for the Fire (despite the silver-framed device in the press image above), an aux input for other devices, a pair of 3-inch speakers with a 16 watt class D digital amplifier, and an optional lithium-ion battery pack that will be available in August.

Barnes & Noble brings out Nook for Web, comes full circle with e-reading (update: not on iOS)

Barnes & Noble brings out Nook for Web, comes full circle with ereading

We’d say it’s about time. Although it’s almost two years late to the party, Barnes & Noble is responding to Amazon’s Kindle for the Web with Nook for Web. Much like its counterpart across the virtual aisle, the Nook web edition lets readers browse free samples and whole books entirely from a web browser while preserving the bookmarking and layout options we’ve come to know and love. Social mavens will like the options to share over Facebook and Twitter without having to leave the page, and recommendations will pop up as you shop. There’s no highlights, however, so it won’t quite replace the Nook app on your iPad just yet. Nook for Web is already ready and waiting as part of Barnes & Noble’s online store, so those who can’t be bothered with native apps can get their fix immediately.

Update: It most definitely won’t replace that Nook app for the iPad. As TechCrunch found out, the web version won’t load on iOS devices.

10-inch Kindle Fire tipped as Amazon new iPad challenge imminent

Amazon’s larger Kindle Fire is still in the pipeline, sources insist, scaling up from the existing 7-inch slate as Apple reportedly scales down to tweener tablet levels. A namedrop in the same NYT article that threw further weight against the iPad mini rumors, according to unnamed developers the retailer is pushing ahead with what’s tipped to be a roughly 10-inch variant of the Kindle Fire, bringing the challenge to Apple’s new iPad.

While Amazon spokespeople unsurprisingly declined to comment on the newspaper’s chatter, the idea of a new, larger Kindle Fire isn’t exactly new. Even before the original Kindle Fire was revealed, speculation had it that Amazon was working on not one but two devices: a cheap, small model (which went on to hit virtual shelves at $199) and a larger, more capable version.

That second model never arrived, however, with talk that Amazon encountered issues with components and performance, among other things. However, going by the insider whispers, that work might be culminating again in a larger device due later in 2012.

Exact hardware details are in short supply, but Android is undoubtedly running – albeit heavily reskinned for Amazon’s content-selling purposes – under the hood, and a screen sized more akin to the 9.7-inch current iPad is likely.

Any launch is most likely to take place alongside the second-generation 7-inch Kindle Fire, which as rumor would have it is due in Q3 with a 1280 x 800 display. Amazon is also tipped to be working on a Kindle smartphone.

NYT: Apple to Launch Smaller, Cheaper iPad While Amazon Goes Large [Rumors]
