Seiki officially prices its 50-inch 4K TV at $1,500 with a late April launch

Seiki 50-inch 4K set

When Seiki’s 4K TV set popped up on retail listings with a price that’s just a fraction of what we’ve seen from its more expensive rivals, we were almost convinced it was a site glitch — that couldn’t be real, could it? The company would like to reassure us that it’s quite serious. The 50-inch Ultra HD set is officially shipping to the US later in April, and it will still carry that regular $1,500 price tag when sales expand from TigerDirect (which claims to have stock today) to include Amazon and QVC, among others. We’d remain cautious about leaping in when Seiki is trying to skip a year or three of the usual commoditization process, but those who insist on their 4K bragging rights won’t have long to wait before they can start boasting.

Amazon Discounts Blackberry Z10 To $99 For AT&T And Verizon

Amazon Discounts Blackberry Z10 To $99 For AT&T And VerizonAre you planning on getting a new phone but can’t decide what to get? If you’re thinking of maybe going with Blackberry’s Z10 smartphone, you could be in luck because it seems that Amazon has decided to drop the price of the Z10 to $99. Of course this price means that you will need to sign on to a two-year contract with either AT&T or Verizon. For those who have ordered the device via Amazon and paid the more expensive price, it seems that Amazon is willing to give back $50 in credit as long as you call their customer service and let them know, although this seems to be only applicable to new customers. For those who’d rather not be stuck in a contract with either carrier, the Z10 is selling at retail for either carrier at $529.99 for AT&T, and $599.99 on Verizon. We have to say $99 isn’t too bad of a price, and could be a somewhat affordable way for you to try out the device without having to spend too much money that you would on a higher-end smartphone like the iPhone 5 or the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S4.

Why Do We Keep Making Ebooks Like Paper Books?

Comparing books to ebooks is like comparing mechanical watches to digital watches, or manual cars to automatic cars. No one doubts the convenience, reach, and flexibility of the ebook format, but it will never convincingly replicate the experience of a paper book—nor does it need to. Ebooks are a fundamentally new medium, stuck in an awkward growing stage. More »

Now When You Buy Vinyl from Amazon, You Get a Digital Copy for Free

Now When You Buy Vinyl from Amazon, You Get a Digital Copy for Free

Audiophiles will go to their graves praising the audio superiority of vinyl. And yes, vinyl sounds great, but you can’t enjoy it in the car or on the bus. Until now. Well, sorta. Amazon announced today that its AutoRip service …

Amazon’s AutoRip now includes vinyl

For about as long as we can remember, each new CD we’ve purchased has made a trip to our computer for a good, old fashioned ripping, first thing out of the plastic. So the concept of offering up free MP3s with the purchase of a compact disc always felt a bit superfluous (particularly in these days when fewer and fewer are buying music in a physical form). The increasingly popular concept of offering up downloads with the purchase of a vinyl LP, on the other hand, makes an awful lot of sense — after all, it’s a lot harder for most of us to transfer that music onto our PCs. Amazon’s embracing the concept by extending its AutoRip promotion to records, giving consumers a 256 Kbps cloud-based copy of the music they buy on vinyl. The promotion extends to thousands of titles — anything sporting the AutoRip logo is fair game, including a number of top sellers like Mumford & Sons and the Lumineers. It’s a nice way of supporting the growing boutique vinyl industry and helping keep a bit of focus on the album as self-contained work, rather than the move toward singles we’ve been experiencing as a result of the digital music explosion of the past several years.

Amazon AutoRip now supports vinyl records

Amazon launched its AutoRip service back in January, allowing you to get a free MP3 version of a music CD that you bought from Amazon, going back as far as 1998 with the purchase history. Now, the e-tail giant is offering vinyl record owners the same deal. If you’ve ever bought a vinyl record on Amazon in the past, the company will give you a free MP3 version for your digital needs.

Just like with CDs, the offer applies to vinyls that you’ve bought from the website since 1998 (how many people were really using the internet to buy vinyl records back then?), and any customers who purchases a vinyl record that is eligible for an AutoRip MP3 version in the future will receive a digital copy that will be automatically added to the user’s Cloud Player library.

Just like with CDs, AutoRip only supports a certain number of vinyl records. In other words, it only goes as high as Amazon’s current catalog of MP3 music that they have available. The company currently boasts 50,000 tracks and counting that are eligible on Amazon’s AutoRip, all of which come with 256kbps quality.

Sales of vinyl records have been making a comeback as of late. They were obviously a popular format back in the 1970s, but many audiophiles argue that vinyl records offer a better quality sound than CDs and even high-bitrate MP3s, thus marking the rise in popularity. Many modern musicians and bands still release their albums in vinyl record format to this day.
