VIZIO 11.6-inch Windows 8 Tablet PC

VIZIO 11 6 tablet windows 1 VIZIO 11.6 inch Windows 8 Tablet PC[CES 2013] VIZIO is coming to CES with a number of Windows 8 including thin laptops and one 11. 6” tablet. A hair thicker than the iPad (0.4” vs. 0.37” – 9.4 mm / 10.16 mm) for a significantly larger display (11.6” vs. 9.5”), the VIZIO tablet  runs an AMD Z60 dual-core 1 GHz processor with 2GB RAM. That processor should deliver higher performance than the Microsoft Surface which runs on nVidia’s Tegra 3. The downside of the AMD solution would probably come from the shorter battery life.

The Full HD display (1920 x 1080) supports ten-fingers touch to comfortably operates the new Microsoft OS. There is only one front facing 2 MP camera however, the 64GB SSD offers good storage capacity. On the connectivity side, you will get the standard Micro HDMI out, micro USB 2.0, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. At 1.66 lbs, the device weighs a little more than the iPad (1.44 lbs) and the Surface RT (less than 1.5 lbs) with a larger body.

This seems to be an excellent Windows 8 tablet on the paper, but with no information regarding the pricing we cannot tell if this is a good product or not. In addition, we need to see it with our own eyes to check the build quality and actual battery life.

Samsung refreshes Series 7 Chronos with AMD Radeon HD 8870M graphics

Just in time for CES 2013, Samsung has updated its Series 7 Chronos notebook with a few welcomed upgrades — the most notable upgrade being AMD’s Radeon HD 8870M graphics chip. There’s not too much information on the new laptop to go around, but it does have a RAMaccelerator, which promises 50 percent faster app loading, a full HD display, and JBL speakers.

series-7-chronos

Samsung posted up a video today showing off the refreshed laptop, and aside from the animal robots that take up most of the video, the company gives us a quick peek as to what the new Series 7 Chronos can do graphics-wise. We also get a glimpse at the keyboard and the outer shell, which both feature a brushed aluminum look.

While the full spec sheet is still a mystery at this point, the most notable bump in performance is the improved graphics. Since the company’s 17-inch model already has a full HD 1920×1080 display and JBL speakers, these improvements could be coming to the 15-inch model, and other features like the RAMaccelerator and upgraded graphics are also coming to the 17-inch version.

In the end, we don’t know what Samsung has up its sleeve, but you can bet big that the company will unveil more during CES next week. We certainly wouldn’t mind an Ultrabook with HD 8870M graphics, but we’re curious as to what other hardware will lie underneath those keys.

Samsung teases Series 7 Chronos refresh with AMD Radeon HD 8870M graphics (video)

Samsung teases Series 7 Chronos refresh with AMD Radeon 8870M graphics (video)

Samsung added a 17-inch model to its Series 7 Chronos laptop range last year, and updated the whole family with Ivy Bridge processors, to boot. Barely a breath into 2013, the company is at it again, teasing better hardware in the “new” Series 7. There isn’t much information in between the scenes of advanced robotic predators (video embed below), but those snippets mention RAMaccelerator (which promises 50 percent faster app loading), a full HD display, JBL speakers and most importantly, a beefy new AMD Radeon HD 8870M GPU. Since the 17-inch model already has a 1,920 x 1,080 panel and JBL speakers, these could be improvements coming to the 15-inch model, or maybe it’s a hint that RAMaccelerator and upgraded graphics are destined for the larger sibling — we just don’t know. As we’re merely days away from CES, it’s likely we’ll get a clearer picture of what’s what at the show, but we’ve also contacted Sammy for clarification in case beans are willing to be spilled beforehand.

Michael Goddard, AMD employee since 1988, leaves for Samsung

AMD‘s financial woes have been ongoing for awhile now, and it is no secret that employees are jumping ship as the issue worsens. It seems that Michael Goddard is one such employee, who after having worked at AMD for nearly 25 years, has left the company to work for Samsung instead. He now works as a system architect at a Samsung office in Texas.

AMD-Goddard

Goddard worked as an engineer for AMD, having started back in 1988. His departure comes after that of over two dozen other AMD executives who have left the company during 2012, not all of whom left voluntarily. As we reported back in October, the company hinted that it would cut a significant amount of its workforce, including those higher up.

That scenario came into fruition, with AMD announcing a short five days later – after its third quarter financial data came in – that it was laying off employees. The company’s Q3 financial report revealed a non-GAAP net loss of $150 million. The company is expected to layoff even more employees in 2013.

As for Goddard and Samsung, neither have offered any sort of statement about the employment shift. While Goddard’s LinkedIn profile was briefly available to show some information, including that he moved to Samsung this month and is a system architect, it is no longer publicly viewable. AMD, however, confirmed that he has left the company.

AMD cuts silicon wafer order by three quarters, gets a nasty fine

AMD cuts silicon wafer orders by three quarters, gets billed for almost the full amount anyway

If you’re in need of a concrete example of how the chip-making industry is trickier than ever, and how it rewards scale at the expense of flexibility, then please, look no further. AMD has just significantly reduced its order for silicon wafers from its old mate Globalfoundries, in an effort to avoid the inventory surpluses and write-downs that have recently plagued its balance sheet. Instead of buying the originally agreed $500 million-worth of cake trays this quarter, it’s now committed to spending just $115 million. Except it was never, ever gonna be that simple. In lieu of reneging on its contract at short notice, AMD will have to pay Globalfoundries a $320 million penalty on top, bringing the final cost of the deal to just $65 million less than what it would have paid for the full order.

On the plus side, of course, that’s still a major saving for a company which is going through an intense rough patch (to say the least) and trying to cling to every dime. Besides, AMD managed to get out of paying the fee as a lump sum, while also reducing its obligations for 2013 and agreeing to pay Globalfoundries less for R&D once it shifts to a more standard 28nm process — so it can’t entirely have run out of clout.

AMD reveals Opteron 3300 and 4300 processors for the penny-pinching enterprise

As a followup to its flagship Opteron 6300 launch last month, AMD has just released several more Piledriver-based processors meant for the server room. One eight-core and two quad-core models are part of the Opteron 3300 series, while the Opteron 4300 series gets six new CPUs: one quad-core, three six-core and two eight-core designs. With all this new silicon, IT pros may have concerns about compatibility issues — but fear not, for all of AMD’s new gear has sockets that fit in with the 3200 and 4200 series to make upgrading a painless process. Designed for small-to-medium sized businesses and web host servers, the chips are relatively inexpensive with prices ranging from $174 to $501, a far cry from the the $575 to $1,392 price of the higher-end 6300.

Despite the low cost, AMD claims the CPUs have a 24 percent performance per watt increase and 15 percent less power usage than their predecessors. The chip maker will likely still face an uphill battle against Intel’s mighty Xeon, but businesses looking to save a little cash might be the Opteron’s saving grace. There’s more detailed specs on the newly announced processors at the source, and you can get a peek at the pricing table after the break.

AMD planning to sell and lease back its Texas campus to scratch out a few extra bucks

AMD planning to sell its Texas campus, prized baseball cards in hope of earning a few extra bucks

Cash-strapped businesses who just can’t keep winking at their bank managers are turning to their real-estate assets for a little extra bread. AMD, no stranger to the process, is pondering flogging and leasing back its 58-acre Texas campus for around $200 million. Perhaps it could shack up with Nokia and Sharp in a Starbucks branch until its current woes abate.
