Hasta La Gadget!

Another small mystery, solved. We caught a glimpse of Huawei’s relatively undercover S7 tablet back in March, but little was known about what would actually power the device and what operating system would be pre-installed. Here at Computex, we learned the facts on both of those points. Sitting pretty at Qualcomm’s booth, the S7 was shown boasting a 1GHz MSM8250 Snapdragon processor, and our hunting around in the settings confirmed that Android 2.1 was loaded onboard. The Qualcomm reps didn’t have any other hard specifications available on the 7-incher (beyond those that we already knew), but we were able to spot a volume rocker, internal speaker, 3.5mm headphone jack, microSD card slot, USB connector and a fancy kickstand around back for sitting a spell and watching multimedia. During our time with the device, we instantly fell in love with the depressible side buttons, and the capacitive resistive touchscreen was as responsive as they come. The whole thing felt speedy and light enough for our liking, and frankly, it was easily one of our favorite tablets at the entire show. We’re still no closer to nailing down a price or release date, but at least you now know it’s worth your while to keep an eye out for both. Vid’s after the break.

So that simultaneous global launch isn’t going to materialize quite as we were told, but Samsung is indeed bringing the Galaxy S to the widest possible audience. The Korean giant has made its 2010 flagship official in Europe today, meaning you should be able to sign your life away to your favorite carrier in exchange for it very soon indeed. We’re told the 4-incher will be making its American debut later in the year, though a protracted delay appears unlikely. Pricing on the Galaxy S might not turn out to be all that democratic, but its comprehensive choice of more than 100 global carriers sure will be, and might suggest we’ll get a choice of networks when the phone finally makes its way Stateside. Hang tight, gringos, not long to go now.

Motorola’s quirky square-shaped Android 2.1 creation has just become official, courtesy of the company’s YouTube channel.The Flipout brings a 2.8-inch, 320 x 240 screen (Kin killer!), a 3 megapixel camera with “one-touch” uploads to Facebook, MySpace and photo-hosting sites, and a refreshed implementation of Motoblur, which now includes resizable widgets, feed filters, and push corporate email. We hear that last feature is a real must-have with the target audience of this device.Video of the Flipout can be found just after the break, and Euro readers can expect it imminently, as the listed Q2 2010 launch date basically means it’ll be out by month’s end. Wonder how they’ll price a curious creature like this.

Update: Our pals at Recombu got a quick hands-on with the Flipout, and… it’s a square Android phone. Video after the break.

Update 2: We’ve come across a more comprehensive spec sheet on Moto’s dev site, which lists AT&T- and Rogers-compatible 3G bands, make of that what you will.

Like it or not, T-Mobile has now officially turned its myTouch brand into an entire franchise, thanks to the addition of a second model and an entire line of styled accessories — but it’s not just about the hardware. Far from it, in fact: with the myTouch 3G Slide, the carrier has actually built a custom skin on top of HTC’s Sense for Android 2.1, and all kidding aside, this phone represents one of the deepest carrier-customized experiences we’ve ever seen. Seeing how this phone arguably represents the true successor to the G1 — T-Mobile’s (and the world’s) first retail Android device — it’s pretty important that they get this right, particularly considering how critical it is for a carrier’s bottom line to capitalize on the meaty, profitable midrange of its smartphone lineup. Oddly MSI didn’t officially talk about its Android-powered WindPad 110 during the press conference, but it definitely exists. The 10-inch slate runs Android 2.1 and is powered by an NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor. It’s got a different design to the WindPad 100, but retains the same 10-inch capacitive touchscreen and will have a USB port and video-out capability. While the tablet runs just stock Android, we’re definitely digging the curved form factor and the ability to swap out the back cover for a more “stylish” option. We heard very conflicting things about the availability of the tablet — one product manager told us that the company hasn’t decided if it will bring it to market, while another told us that they plan to sell it for $399 by the end of the year. Hopefully we’ll clear that up soon, but we’ve got some hands-on pictures below, along with a video after the break.
