Hasta La Gadget!

Samsung was widely (if unofficially) expected to upgrade the Galaxy Tab line to Ice Cream Sandwich this summer. Thankfully, that wasn’t just wishful thinking on the part of a few fans. Numerous Galaxy Tab 10.1 WiFi owners in the US have reported receiving an official push to Android 4.0.4 shortly after getting out of bed on Monday. The new TouchWiz, Chrome support and more are all welcome — just don’t anticipate any unique twists from the upgrade. In some respects, we’re likely getting a Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 with a Tegra 2 processor. The only real uncertainties are when the rest of the eligible Galaxy Tab line will make the leap as well as the possibility of Jelly Bean; hopefully, it’s not the end of the update road for some of Samsung’s earliest tablet adopters in the country.

Remember Samsung’s Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch for Sprint? Think that name was a mouthful? Well here’s a press shot of — wait for it — Samsung’s SGH-T699 aka. Galaxy S Blaze Q, a QWERTY slider for T-Mobile that’s been leaked before. Beyond the terrible name, the August 15th mention on the screen appears to confirm the previous launch date rumors. Spec-wise, the phone is expected to pack a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 with 1GB of RAM and 16GB of built-in storage. There’s also mention of 1080p video capture and a 720p display — the latter being unlikely in light of the large amount of bezel surrounding the screen (Samsung’s smallest HD Super AMOLED display is 4.65-inches across). Our guess is that T-Mobile’s just complementing Samsung’s existing Galaxy S Blaze 4G with a mid-range QWERTY slider, but we’ll find out soon enough.

Motorola may have pushed some of its earliest Android 4.0 updates to the Verizon-centric Droid RAZR, but it hasn’t forgotten those who call the international, HSPA-based RAZR (the XT910) their own: the phone’s first wave of over-the-air upgrades to the new OS should be rolling out now, going by GSMArena‘s tips. Who exactly is getting the upgrade isn’t obvious, although at least one owner on Tesco’s network has the visual evidence to suggest the UK is part of the first batch. We can vouch that at least a few Canadian RAZRs are still making do with Android 2.3. Never mind the unconfirmed claims of carrier-related delays for the update, though — we’re just glad that both Americans and the rest of the world will likely be on the same page before too long.

Well, it’s certainly taken a while, but the popular CyanogenMod finally has a stable version of its ninth iteration. It’s yet to hit the ROM’s homepage, but that’s probably because its only available for the GSM Galaxy Nexus at the moment. The Ice Cream Sandwich-based ROM has clearly posed some issues for the devs, but it’s worming its way towards a wide release and work on CM10 (which is based on Jelly Bean) is already progressing quite nicely. In many ways moving to a build of Android 4.0.4 will be a step backwards for those running stock 4.1, but CM9’s support for themes, gestures and the top-notch DSP equalizer will surely lure a few away from the official Google release. Hit up the source to download the stable Maguro-friendly release for yourself.

The Xperia GX passed muster at the FCC labs a few weeks back and is filling shelves of NTT DoCoMo stores starting today. If you like your smartphone screens big and high-resolution, you’ll probably be very happy with the Xperia GX‘s 720p 4.6-inch display, wrapped in a curved frame similar to last year’s Xperia Arc. There’s no word on whether the phone will remain a Japan-only exclusive, but Sony is likely to have something new to show off at European trade show, IFA, in only a few weeks. Arguably more of a looker than the Xperia S, perhaps we’ll see a global model — there’s a pentaband 3G radio in this iteration — sidling up next to an Xperia tablet in Germany very soon.
