Ematic unwraps 9.7-inch eGlide Pro X tablet, widens its Android 4.0 horizons in a literal sense

Ematic unwraps 97inch eGlide Pro X tablet, widens its Android 40 horizons in a literal sense

Ematic has a tendency to release a lot of tablets, so what’s one more? In the case of the eGlide Pro X, quite a bit. The newly shipping model uses a 9.7-inch, 4:3 ratio display that will be quite familiar to some, but which is still quite rare in the narrower, 16:10-happy world of Android 4.0. It’s thankfully more than just superficials that get the boost. We’d say that the Pro X is just that slightly more pro than its XL Pro ancestor through a faster 1.2GHz processor and a doubled 8GB of built-in storage. A microSD slot, HDMI, Kobo’s book app, and Ematic’s own Google-replacing software all show their familiar faces. The $220 price currently makes this latest of eGlides a good bargain, but we have a hunch you might want to wait until Google I/O — you never know what you might get.

Sony Xperia Neo L peels back the covers for FCC

Sony Xperia Neo L peels back the covers for FCC

Remember that low-end Xperia handset that surfaced earlier this month with a one-way ticket to China? Well that 4-inch ICS device, the Neo L, has just made its many assets known for the folks at the FCC, stripping down to its internal skivvies and leaving nothing to the (lawyer’s) imagination. There aren’t any surprises here — no LTE or AWS support, but it does sport radios for EDGE / GPRS (850MHz, 1900MHz), GSM (850MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz, 1900MHz) and WCDMA (900MHz, 2100MHz). So, the good news is that if you have your eye on this Sony-made Android lightweight, then it should play nice with AT&T and T-Mobile. Whether it’ll ever officially joins those carriers lineups remains to be seen, but don’t let a little thing like that stop you from importing away. Hit up the source to trawl the mobile dissection at your leisure.

Huawei pushes Ascend D Quad production to August, pins it on processor hiccups

Huawei Ascend D Quad hands-on

Those of us yearning to bring Huawei’s Ascend D Quad on summer vacation will have to file that dream away for next year. The company’s consumer division chief, Yu Chengdong, has pushed back the phone’s volume production from this month to August. Blame for the setback rests squarely on that custom-developed K3V2 processor — there have been “technical problems” getting it ready, if we go by Huawei’s less than precise explanation. The timing certainly isn’t what we’d call ideal: now that the Galaxy S III and One X are both common features of the smartphone landscape, the Ascend D Quad’s performance won’t be turning nearly as many heads when it arrives. We’ll have to make do with the solid Ascend P1 in the meantime.

HTC EVO 3D receives Android 4.0 update in EMEA, Sprint’s update imminent?

Heads up HTC EVO 3D users, it looks like the Android 4.0 update for your phone has started to roll out. Unfortunately it appears that this rollout is only targeted at the EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) regions, so if you’re living outside those regions, you’re probably out of luck at least for now. Oddly enough Sprint’s version of the update is still missing, despite being promised for a June release last time we checked. Perhaps the EMEA could get it first before Sprint does – after all there are a couple of days left before the month of June is over, so Sprint still has time to make good on the June release. That being said, if you can’t wait for the official release (if and when it ever heads stateside), there are alternatives such as this leaked Android 4.0 ROM, although it does require that the user have some knowledge when it comes to rooting and flashing their devices. Either that or you guys can wait patiently for the update, which we will be sure to inform you when it does arrive!

Motorola RAZR Maxx with Android 4.0/ICS Upddate

Verizon has started to update a small number of Motorola RAZR Maxx phones and this is one of them. If you’re not familiar with this handset, you can go read our full review of the Motorola RAZR Maxx, but for now, we’ll go over some of the best new features that Android 4.0 aka Ice Cream Sandwich (or ICS) brings to this device, along with some improvements from Motorola itself.

1/ After powering up the phone, the most obvious sign of change is the new Unlock screen that now gives you direct access to the Phone, Camera or Text apps, in addition to the home page. Normally, you should be able to configure which apps show up there, but I haven’t tried yet. This is good, and every smartphone should a multi-access Unlock feature like this and there’s no reason to limit to 4 either. (more…)

Toshiba Excite 13 review: a big-screened tablet with a price to match

Toshiba Excite 13 review a bigscreened tablet with a price to match

Well, this lede pretty much wrote itself. A 13-inch tablet, seriously? Toshiba is pushing the form factor limits with the Excite 13, and while its dimensions make it stand out in a sea of 7- and 10-inch devices, that isn’t necessarily what tablet buyers are looking for.

There’s no shortage of skepticism about such a large slate — “slab” seems appropriate here — so the Toshiba Excite 13 needs to provide an exceptional experience, with a brilliant display and smooth graphics, to make 2.2 pounds seem more palatable. On paper, its specs are promising: there’s a quad-core Tegra 3 CPU under the hood, a 1600 x 900 display at 138 ppi and a clean build of Android 4.0. The company already has the Excite 7.7 and Excite 10 in its arsenal, and their good performance and bright displays make for compelling tablets. But how does a 13-inch tablet that starts at $650 round out that trio? Read on for our full impressions.

Samsung Galaxy Note for T-Mobile pops up in claimed press shots, we try to feign surprise

Samsung Galaxy Note for TMobile pops up in claimed press shots, we try to feign surprise

There’s been demo units, FCC filings and the obligatory blurry photos, so it was only a matter of time before leaked press imagery completed our picture of a Galaxy Note for T-Mobile USA. As long as they’re not cosmetic makeovers by wishful T-Mobile fans, the CellPhoneSignal images portray… well, a Galaxy Note. No exotic colors, no obvious clues supporting talk that it ships with a preloaded Android 4.0 upgrade. Most of the hardware changes, then, should be all about adapting the HSPA+ 3G to support T-Mobile’s airwaves. Unconfirmed talk has the Galaxy Note reaching Magenta on July 11th; that’s nine months after the original version popped up, but we’re sure some will be thankful just to have more choices than AT&T for that phablet fix.

HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE may hit Verizon on July 5th

HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE may hit Verizon on July 5th

The bad news: if you’ve been hoping to grab a Droid Incredible 4G LTE so you can show it off to your friends at your local July 4th extravaganza, you’re out of luck. The good news: you might be able to cheer up from your post-holiday depression the very next day. According to internal employee docs captured by Droid-Life, we should expect Verizon’s first Sense 4 device to arrive at stores on July 5th for $200 with a two-year contract. As always, pricing and availability are never set in stone; after all, internal employee docs gave us false hope that the Motorola Droid 4 would show up several weeks before it actually launched, but that was likely a result of Verizon pulling the launch at the last minute. Provided Big Red doesn’t change its mind (or other snafus throw a wrench into the process), we won’t be disappointed this time around.

ICS officially available for AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II beginning tomorrow

ICS now officially available for AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II

While it’s true a few lucky AT&T Galaxy S II owners were able to get their hands on the official upgrade to Android 4.0 just a matter of days ago, the company wasn’t ready to push it out to the masses quite just yet. The initial tests must’ve gone as well as hoped, however, because AT&T will be ready to make ICS publicly available tomorrow to anyone willing to go through Kies to grab it. Indeed, the one drawback to this wonderful news is the fact that ICS doesn’t just come to you… you need to go to it. As in, no over-the-air capabilities. The silver lining to that, though, is that this may actually work out better for anyone that feels better off sticking with the tried-and-true Gingerbread TouchWiz experience. On a sidenote, AT&T also reaffirmed its commitment to bringing the next version of Android to more devices this summer, but refused to specify which ones we can look forward to. Head below (or check out the source link) to learn how to grab the update.
