Nexus 7 preorders start shipping in UK and Canada

The Nexus 7 machine is in full swing. According to Google, all pre-orders placed by Friday the 13th in the US and Australia have been filled as of today (though some may still be en route), and our friends in the UK and Canada should be receiving theirs soon enough. Deliveries are currently heading out in waves, putting 7-inches of Jelly Bean in the hands of eager “footie” fans and beneficiaries of socialized medicine. Have you gotten your shipment notification yet? Let us know in the comments.

Update: Google has since changed the wording on its site and, unfortunately, not “all” US and Australian have shipped. Now it’s just “many.”

Update 2: Google has changed the wording yet again, now providing more detail broken down by model. As of 7:50~ ET, it indicates all standalone 8GB versions ordered on or before July 13th have been shipped, while standalone 16GB orders placed on or before July 11th will all be shipped by the 19th, and have also been upgraded to overnight shipping. Ordered with accessories like a case, charger or Nexus Q? Your slate will ship, overnight, this week although the extra bits may be following “soon.” Got it? Hit the source link to get it all straight from the horse’s mouth and to check whether it’s (inevitably) been updated once again.

[Thanks, Andrew]

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is more secure, according to security expert

While new features and a new UI are always a welcome change with major OS revisions, security is probably one of the more important features. After all, there’s really no point in having a fancy looking OS with the security flaws and holes that any hacker could break into, right? Well if you’re planning on making the switch to Android or updating your Android device to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, you might be interested to learn that according to a report by Duo Security’s Jon Oberheide, Google has beefed up security in Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, making it more secure when compared to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. This is thanks to a technology called ASLR which he explains: (more…)

HTC HD2 gets unofficial Android 41 Jelly Bean port, becomes the Phone That Would Not Die

There’s a golden rule for the HTC HD2: if there’s a new mobile OS, the HD2 must get a port. It’s practically a law of nature, then, that Evervolv at the XDA-Developers forums has produced a pre-alpha port of Android 4.1 for the originally Windows Mobile-based legend. More components are working than not despite the extremely early state, with the camera, Google Now and web browser being the remaining bugaboos. We’re still warned that the experimental firmware isn’t meant for day-to-day use, but there’s every intention of making the release stable — good news for anyone who’s eager to avoid a flash-in-the-pan ROM. If that happens, the HD2 will have had nearly as many lives as a cat.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean keyboard available for download on Android 4.0.3 devices

If you own the Amazon Kindle Fire, you’re probably aware that Android 4.1 Jelly Bean has been ported onto your tablet via a ROM, albeit in beta form. However if you don’t own the Kindle Fire but you’re looking to get in on the Jelly Bean action anyway, you’re sort of in luck as the Jelly Bean built-in keyboard has been extracted and is currently available as a download via the Google Play store. Unfortunately it appears to be available only for devices running Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich and higher, so if you’re running on a lower version of Android, you’re out of luck (for now).

While we have yet to have a go at the Jelly Bean keyboard ourselves, it has been reported that while it does look similar to its ICS predecessor, Android 4.1’s built-in keyboard is expected to be much better at prediction and should be very welcome by those who type frequently on their mobile devices. However it should be noted that this port is currently in its beta stages and there are limitations to it, such as English being the only language supported at the moment. However if you’d like to give it go anyway, pop on over to the Google Play Store for the download.

Upcoming Motorola Xoom soak test suggests that Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update is imminent

It wasn’t too long ago that the Motorola Xoom Android tablet received its Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update and it looks like the Xoom tablet is set to receive the next major Android update – Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Google did promise that the Xoom would be the first device to receive Android 4.1, which we guess isn’t all too surprising given that Google does own Motorola Mobility now. According to the folks at Droid-Life, members of the Motorola Feedback Network have confirmed that they have started to receive invites to test a new software.

While it was not explicitly mentioned that the new software will be Android 4.1, it stands to reason that it could very well be Android 4.1; after all Google did promise a mid-July release. This update will be hitting the WiFi version of the Xoom tablet first, but no word if Verizon’s Xoom tablet will be receiving the same treatment at the same time, if at all.  Either way we will be keeping our eyes and ears open for more news, so be sure to check back with us at a later date to see if this update is indeed Jelly Bean.

Google starts shipping Nexus 7 pre-orders, writes a rhyme to celebrate

Google starts shipping Nexus 7 preorders, writes a rhyme to celebrate

Dr. Suess it’s not, but Google just had to make a bit of hullabaloo about the launch of its first branded tablet, the Nexus 7. The search giant took the wraps off it a few weeks back, but now pre-orders have finally started shipping to those who plunked down the $199 (or $249) for the Jelly Bean-packing slate. A few of you tipped us that the charge had finally hit your credit card, and now the official Google Nexus Twitter account has confirmed the devices have been packed on to trucks. So, celebrate, unless you’re one of the hesitant ones that didn’t place your order early in the Google Play store.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

CyanogenMod developers slap Jelly Bean on an Optimus 4X HD, tease CM10 (video)

CyanogenMod developers slap Jelly Bean on an Optimus 4X HD, tease CM10

That didn’t take long. The boys behind CyanogenMod promised a quick turnaround for its upcoming JellyBean-based update and are already teasing workable CM10 ROMs. CyanogenMod’s Ricardo Cerqueira tossed a video of an early CM10 build on his YouTube page, declaring “it lives!” The early build is running on an LG Optimus 4X HD, and runs through unlocking the screen and recording and playing back a video. The build is still having some trouble with Google’s revamped search integration, but considering Android 4.1’s source code was released only days ago, the quick development is promising. Check out Cercuiera’s quick demo for yourself after the break.

Nexus 7 pre-orders ship to some customers — has yours?

Nexus 7 preorders ship to some customers has yours

It could be a trickle or a torrent, but reports are coming in that Google is shipping the first Nexus 7 pre-orders to those customers who pulled the trigger at the Google Play Store while the I/O keynote seats were still warm. Third-party retailers Adorama and Ebuyer also briefly started selling the Jelly Bean tablet, although they’re now known to have jumped the gun: both were told by Google to freeze sales until at least Sunday. The word of an imminent arrival is no doubt music to the ears of those who thought that even the three-week wait was interminable. Still, we’d like to know whether yours is truly on its way or if that $199, ASUS-made Android dream will have to wait a little longer.
