A few weeks back Sony set a deadline for itself, the company said that it will release Android 4.3 for a handful of Xperia devices by “early February.” Even though the roll out process started off this week, the company didn’t exactly meet its deadline. Android 4.3 Jelly Bean might not be the latest iteration of Google’s mobile platform, but still there are a plethora of devices that have yet to be updated to said firmware. There exists the possibility that Jelly Bean might be the last major update that these devices receive for a long time. The new kid on the block may be Android 4.4 KitKat, but a large number of device have yet to receive the now outdated Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update. It can take a while for these updates to be released, they go through various processes before they are ultimately released for the end user. Recently, there has been chatter that the Android 4.3 update for Sony Xperia SP and Xperia T is just around the corner. Apparently the update is in the final stage of testing. While there’s no word on the official release, a pre-release build of the update has leaked online for these two devices.
The Android 4.3 update for Xperia T carries build number 9.2.A.0.278, and 12.1.A.0.256 for the Xperia SP. Screenshots of these pre-release test builds were leaked earlier this week, now the firmware files have appeared online. Those who are interesting in installing the leaked update on their device should keep in mind that its meant for devices with unlocked bootloaders only. Moreover, flashing unofficial firmware files is a bit tricky and may brick the device if something goes wrong. So only go ahead with the install if you’re absolutely sure of what you’re doing. Sony Xperia smartphone owners have been patiently waiting for the company to release the much awaited Android 4.3 update. It has indeed started the roll out process, with the update already having been released for the Xperia Z1 and the Z Ultra. Merely a couple of days back, The Xperia Z, ZR, ZL and the Xperia Tablet Z all received their Android 4.3 updates. A member on the XDA developers forum, who appears to be an official beta tester for Sony, has posted a picture of his Xperia SP running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Moreover, a new firmware build has been certified for this smartphone just a few days back and it is believed that this might be an Android 4.3 build. Going by these developments, it shouldn’t be long before the update is finally rolled out over the air for all Xperia SP variants, C5302, C5303 and C5306. The Xperia SP is also slated to receive the much sought after Android 4.4 KitKat update, though that might not happen until we’re well into 2014. A number of other Xperia smartphones are also yet to be updated to KitKat.
