Android 4.3 Reportedly Causing Trouble For Some Nexus 4 Owners

Android 4.3 Reportedly Causing Trouble For Some Nexus 4 OwnersIf you own a Google Nexus 4 device and you were looking forward to the Android 4.3 update, you might want to hold off from updating your phone just yet. According to a smattering of reports on the Google Product Forums, it seems that the Android 4.3 update is causing a fair bit of trouble to several Nexus 4 owners. The main problems that have been reported are freezes on their phone, which either gets the owner stuck at the X splash screen, or have their device stuck in a never-ending boot loop. So far the problem can be temporarily rectified if the Nexus 4 owner were to either factory reset their phone, or flash their device to an older version of Android, ultimately losing all their data in the process.

We expect the latter might not be feasible for the less tech savvy, so factory resetting is probably the best option for now. Of course the experience of Android 4.3 will vary from user to user as there are some who have reported that their Nexus 4 units are fine after the update, but either way hopefully Google is looking into the issue and will issue a statement and/or a fix soon.

CyanogenMod 10.2 Will Come With “Global Blacklist” For Blocking Calls Or Texts

CyanogenMod 10.2 Will Come With Global Blacklist For Blocking Calls Or Texts

Soon after Google announced Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, the folks at CyanogenMod made their own little announcement. They have begun work on CM 10.2 ROMs. David Van Tonder took to Google+ to reveal a feature that would be included in CM 10.2 ROMs. Called “Global Blacklist,” it will allow users to block text messages and calls, even both if they want to. The feature will be configurable through Messaging, Phone and Settings. It will also be available to third party apps through a “content provider API.”

The Holo compliant interface means that the feature will blend in with the rest of the Android 4.3 environment. Users will be able to type or select numbers to block from their address book. Numbers can also be added to the blacklist from the in-call screen, the call history screen, the quick reply popup as well as the Conversation screen in the Messaging app. Users will be able to enforce the type of blocking, whether they just want to block texts from a particular number or calls. Notifications will be displayed with an unblock action, users will be able to allow a number to be whitelisted so that calls or messaging, or both, can reach the user. No word as yet when we can expect CM 10.2 ROMs to be released.

Fix For Netflix App Bug On Android 4.3 Being Developed

Fix For Netflix App Bug On Android 4.3 Being Developed

It has only been a few days since Google released Android 4.3. The latest Jelly Bean update is currently available for Nexus devices only, other manufacturers will have their own release time-frames. A lot of users have reported a bug in the Netflix app that’s causing quite an issue for those running Android 4.3. If the user launches Netflix app and the devices goes to sleep due to no input from the user for a select time period, it won’t come back up if the power button is pressed. Pressing the power button once normally brings the device back from sleep, in this particular case, the power button has to be pressed so that the device can be restarted.

Judging by the complaints received so far, it doesn’t look like its necessary for a video to be playing in the Netflix app. Merely launching it and letting the device go to sleep will trigger this bug. Fortunately, both Google and Netflix are aware of this bug. Google Dan Morrill left a comment on Reddit saying that they have their “top men” working on it. Hopefully a fix will be just around the corner. Have you experienced this bug on your Android 4.3 running Nexus device?

Android 4.3 supports TRIM, improves performance on Nexus devices

Android 4.3 supports TRIM, improves performance on Nexus devices

It’s no secret that many Android phones and tablets show a decrease in performance over time. Nexus devices are not immune — it’s particularly noticeable with the original Nexus 7. Our friend Brian Klug over at AnandTech discovered an interesting tidbit while testing the new and improved Nexus 7: Android 4.3 supports TRIM. What this means is that Google’s mobile OS can now instruct the flash storage controller when to collect / recycle unused data pages / blocks. The net result is that devices running Android 4.3 will no longer become sluggish with time — in fact, existing Nexus handsets and tablets will see performance improve after the update. It also looks like Jelly Bean invokes TRIM maintenance once within a 24-hour window (after one hour of inactivity), and only if the battery is 80% full (30% when charging). Follow the source link below for all the details.

Android 4.3 source code reveals support for 4K resolution

Android 4.3 source reveals support for 4K resolution

We’ve seen Android run on anything from low-resolution smartwatches to high-PPI phones and tablets, including the new 1920 x 1200-pixel Nexus 7 Google launched earlier this week. To make this possible, the mobile OS supports a number of pixel densities for app content — from 120PPI (LDPI / Low DPI) to 480PPI (XXHDPI / Extra Extra High DPI). Close examination of the Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) source code reveals the addition of a 640PPI (XXXHDPI / Extra Extra Extra High DPI) pixel density, which — according to the comments in the code — is intended for 4K televisions. Does this mean we’ll begin to see Android devices with 640PPI Ultra HD displays? Perhaps, but considering 480PPI is overkill on handsets, this is most likely designed to make image assets and fonts, such as the Google TV UI, readable on 4K screens when viewed from a distance.

Google makes Android 43 factory images available through AOSP

Google officially announced its latest version of Android today and, like clockwork, it’s now made it available for download through the Android Open Source Project. That covers those with a Nexus 4, Nexus 7, Nexus 10 or Galaxy Nexus (GSM version-only), all of whom can find what they need to start the update process to Android 4.3 (still going by the Jelly Bean moniker) at the source link below. Feel free to leave your impressions of the new OS in the comments below.

Update: Android Central points to a link for the OTA version of the update for the Nexus 4, which users should be able to sideload more easily if it hasn’t already been pushed to their devices automatically.

Android 4.3 Available Today For Nexus 7, Nexus 4, Nexus 10 And Galaxy Nexus

android_series01

Today at Google’s event, VP of Android Hugo Barra introduced the new Nexus 7, as well as Android’s newest version — Android 4.3. All of these devices will receive the over-the-air update today.

Android 4.3 features new restricted profiles for kids, OpenGL|ES 3.0 for game developers, a redesigned camera interface, Bluetooth Low Energy support and general performance improvements. Android 4.3 will still be called ‘Jelly Bean’. Darrell wrote a post detailing every new feature in Android 4.3.

Recently, Google started selling the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One with a pure Android OS. As Google can update those devices pretty easily, the company mentioned that the Galaxy S4 and HTC One will receive the 4.3 update “very soon” as well.

Google didn’t announce any release date of Android 4.3 for third-party device makers. OEMs may have to test their UI layers first (like Sense or TouchWiz) before rolling it out to their users.
