Several LG Smartphones Will Reportedly Jump Straight To Android 4.4

Several LG Smartphones Will Reportedly Jump Straight To Android 4.4

It has been a couple of months now since Google formally unveiled Android 4.4 KitKat, in fact that OS has been followed up by two incremental updates that have pushed the version number up to Android 4.4.2. Still there are quite a few OEMs out there that have yet to reveal their roadmaps for the update, LG happens to be one of those manufacturers. Rumor has it that a handful of LG smartphones are going to jump straight to Android 4.4 KitKat, with several of them skipping Android 4.2 and Android 4.3 in the process.

This has not yet been confirmed officially by LG, so the rumor should be taken with a grain of salt. The smartphones expected to skip older Android firmware versions include LG Optimus F3, Optimus F6, Optimus F7, Optimus L9 II, Optimus Vu II, Vu III, G Pro Lite and even the self-healing LG G Flex. The rumor doesn’t mention exactly when the Android 4.4 KitKat update will be released for these devices, its unlikely that all of them will receive chocolatey goodness at the very same time. Moreover, it has also been claimed that the LG Optimus 4X HD will be staying put at Android 4.1.2. Presumably the LG G Pad 8.3 tablet will also be jumping ahead to KitKat, the Google Play Edition of this tablet already comes with Android 4.4 preinstalled.

Jelly Bean Leads Android Distribution In December

Jelly Bean Leads Android Distribution In December

Google has released the latest Android distribution statistics, and three builds of Jelly Bean lead their predecessors and even their successor. 59.1 percent of all mobile devices out there powered by Google’s mobile operating system are accounted for by Android 4.1, Android 4.2 and Android 4.3. Jelly Bean has registered a nominal surge when compared to November 2013, back then distribution stood at 54.5 percent. It rose up to 59.1 percent last month. Android 4.1 particularly leads the pack, powering 35.9 percent of all Android devices.

Now it hasn’t been long since Google released Android 4.4 KitKat, and the update has only been rolled out for a few devices as yet. Most major flagships from last year are yet to receive the update, which is why KitKat adoption stood at 1.4 percent in December 2013, a mere .3 percent boost when compared to the stats from the preceding month. Its going to take a lot of time before there’s substantial adoption of KitKat by Android users around the world. Most devices aren’t expected to receive this update until at least a couple of months. However, new flagships that come out in 2014 are likely to be powered by the latest Android iteration, which will definitely boost its adoption stats. Legacy builds such as Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich account for 1.3 percent, 21.2 percent, 0.1 percent and 16.9 percent respectively.

Galaxy S4 And HTC One Google Play Edition Receive Android 4.4.2 Update

Galaxy S4 And HTC One Google Play Edition Receive Android 4.4.2 Update

Google rolled out the Android 4.4.2 update recently shortly after it had rolled out Android 4.4.1 for Nexus devices. Updates such as these are first rolled out for Nexus devices before they gradually make their way to devices manufactured by other OEMs. The benefit of owning a Google Play Edition device is that you’re much higher up the list, meaning that updates are rolled out for these variants soon after the Nexus devices have received their fix. The first two GPE smartphones released earlier this year, the Galaxy S4 and HTC One, have both received the latest release of KitKat, Android 4.4.2.

These incremental updates don’t bring any major features, however they do fix various bugs, including device specific bugs. Furthermore, a SMS related security exploit that was discovered recently has also been patched in Android 4.4.2. The updates have started rolling out over-the-air for both Google Play Edition smartphones, alternatively, users can download the firmware files from Google and flash their devices manually. Just recently a couple of new GPE devices were released, including the first ever GPE LG G Pad 8.3 tablet and a similar edition of the Sony Xperia Z Ultra. Both of these devices, the smartphone and the tablet, come with Android 4.4 KitKat preinstalled.

LG Optimus G Android 4.4 KitKat Begins Rolling Out For Some Users [Update]

Developer Edition And U.S. Unlocked HTC One Receives Android 4.4 Update

Developer Edition And U.S. Unlocked HTC One Receives Android 4.4 Update

The HTC One smartphone is available from all four major U.S. carriers, Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint to be precise. Customers who bought their units from these carriers are currently waiting for Android 4.4 KitKat update to drop, given the fact that KitKat is the latest version of Google’s mobile operating system. While HTC is yet to say when carrier branded units are going to receive the update, the manufacturer revealed via Twitter that Android 4.4 has been released for U.S. unlocked as well as the developer edition variants of HTC One.

It didn’t say what changes the update brings to Sense UI. It can be presumed that only necessary changes have been made to Sense UI to ensure its compatibility with Android 4.4, this presumption can be made keeping in mind the fact that the update has been released quite quickly and major changes usually take months to be made before they’re finally rolled out. HTC joins Motorola in ensuring a quick release of KitKat for at least some of its devices, Motorola rolled out the update for Moto X even before it reached Google Play Edition variants of the HTC One and Galaxy S4. HTC is rolling out the update in stages for the U.S. unlocked and developer edition variants, so if you own one, don’t worry if the update notification doesn’t immediately pop up.
