Nexus 4 Android 4.4 KRT16S Build Causing Issues For Some Users

Nexus 4 Android 4.4 KRT16S Build Causing Issues For Some Users

It hasn’t been long since the official Android 4.4 KitKat update rolled out for the Google Nexus 4 smartphone. First the factory images were posted online for enthusiasts who like to manually flash their updates, and a short while after that the Android 4.4 KitKat update was rolled out over-the-air for Nexus 4 devices. Some users are reporting that the update has caused several issues such as rendering the Home button useless, breaking the dialer, non-working Quick Settings toggle and some other issues. The issues don’t appear to be widespread, as quite a lot of users running the same build report that everything is working like it should.

It seems that these issues affect those users the most who have upgraded from the final Jelly Bean build JWR66Y to Android 4.4 KitKat KRT16S over-the-air or through the factory image without first wiping the device. Users who updated through the KRT160 factory build don’t appear to be affected at all. The fix that most users have discovered to work for them is a complete wipe of the device, this obviously means that all data stored on it will be erased, so if you’re facing this issue, its best that you first create a backup of your data. The exact reason why these issues are being faced is not known at this point in time.

Unofficial CM11 Android 4.4 KitKat ROM For HTC Incredible S Released

Unofficial CM11 Android 4.4 KitKat ROM For HTC Incredible S Released

There’s never a shortage of source built custom ROMs, and one has just been released for the HTC Incredible S. If you’re not familiar with this smartphone, it was released in early 2011 with Android 2.2 Froyo pre-installed. The magic of source built custom ROMs is that they bring goodies from the latest Android update even if the devices are not officially supported. An official CyanogenMod 11 Android 4.4 KitKat custom ROM is now available for the HTC Incredible S, and its not the only legacy device that has received a ROM, only recently we saw the three year old Motorola Defy receive some KitKat love.

Given the fact that it is a custom ROM after all, and an unofficial build at that, there are bound to be a few bugs here and there. As of now, both cameras are not working but majority of the features are, such as the GPS, Wi-Fi, SD card mounting, Bluetooth, audio and more. 3D hardware acceleration works as well, so the device should perform smoothly on this custom ROM. Flashing custom ROMs is a risky job, if you don’t know what you’re doing you can end up bricking your device and it would entirely be your fault. So only proceed once you know what you’re doing. The ROM and installation instructions are available here.

Google Keyboard Update Brings KitKat Features

Google Keyboard Update Brings KitKat Features

Google Keyboard, which is actually available as a standalone app in the Play Store, has received an update. The latest update, which bumps version number up to 2.0, brings features over from the keyboard baked in Android 4.4 KitKat, Google’s latest mobile OS update. One of the advantages of Google decoupling various features and offering them as standalone apps is that the company can push out updates for those particular features at any given time. So while it might take quite a lot of time for Android devices to receive the KitKat update, users can at least update the keyboard on their devices and enjoy features from the latest software release.

There’s a new grey theme and a shortcut for Emoji. Unfortunately, this Google Keyboard update for some reason doesn’t bring the Emjoi that are baked into Android 4.4 KitKat. Users now also have the ability to trace sentences by brushing across the spacebar. Android users have a lot of options now with regards to keyboard. Just this week, Swype, SwiftKey and Google Keyboard have all been updated around the same time. The third-party options bring additional features, though users will have to dish out some money. Google Keyboard on the other hand is available as a free download from the Play Store.

Sony Reveals Android 4.4 KitKat And Android 4.3 Jelly Bean Upgrade Roadmap

Sony Reveals Android 4.4 KitKat And Android 4.3 Jelly Bean Upgrade Roadmap

Google’s formal announcement of Android 4.4 KitKat took place last week. Android enthusiasts around the world are definitely wondering when the update is going to be rolled out for their devices. Google will release KitKat for supported existing Nexus devices over the next few weeks, whereas OEMs are gradually outlining their own roadmaps as well. Sony today revealed its Android 4.4 KitKat and Android 4.3 Jelly Bean upgrade roadmap, however since software rollouts are phased, timing and availability may vary by country and carrier.

Starting next month, from the Xperia Z smartphone lineup, the Z, ZL, ZR, SP, Z Ultra and Z1 will receive the Android 4.3 update along with the Xperia Tablet Z. Since the company has already mentioned that a number of its devices are going to jump from Android 4.1 to Android 4.3, today it confirmed that Xperia T, Xperia TX and Xperia V will be making the jump. Sony also confirms that the first raft of Xperia devices to get the Android 4.4 KitKat update include the Z, ZL, Z Ultra, Z1 and the Xperia Tablet Z. The company doesn’t say anything about timing though, it says that updates about specific release times for these products will be provided “as things progress.” Don’t get your hopes up for an immediate release, it may take well over a couple of months before the update is finally rolled out.

Android 4.4 KitKat Will Display Your Google+ Photo When Calling An Android Phone

Android 4.4 KitKat Will Display Your Google+ Photo When Calling An Android Phone

If you’re an Android owner who has ignored Google+ for the most part, it’s going to be difficult to continue to do so as Google plans on displaying a user’s Google+ profile photo when that person calls an Android device.

The Google+ profile photo feature will be available as an update to Android 4.4 KitKat’s new caller ID service, which will allow Google to automatically match phone numbers for both incoming and outgoing calls with their Google+ names and profile photos. The new feature is expected to enabled starting in “early 2014,” according to Google employee Attila Bodis. (more…)

Nexus 5 And Android 4.4 Being Announced Separately In Tel-Aviv On November 5th

Nexus 5 And Android 4.4 Being Announced Separately In Tel Aviv On November 5th

We’ve yet to hear from Google about the launch event of Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 KitKat. Obviously the primary event is going to take place here in the U.S., probably in California, but it appears that there’s a separate press conference planned in Tel-Aviv, Israel on November 5th. It is not immediately evident if Google is going to take part in this press conference, but LG appears to be involved. The invites show off a generic looking smartphone with a KitKat bar stuffed in it, its most likely a hint of what to expect from the press conference.

It may simply be a regional announcement of Google’s brand new smartphone built in collaboration with LG, and the internet search giant’s latest update to its mobile platform. Ronlight Digital, a distributor of LG products in Israel, confirms that the press conference is related to Android 4.4. So there’s really no guess work involved here, with regards to what can be expected from the press conference. Though it does point towards the possibility of an official announcement coming from Google prior to November 5th. Just recently it was rumored that the Nexus 5 will be announced on November 1st, Android 4.4 is going to be announced alongside the smartphone. [Image via Gadgety]

Android 4.4 KitKat Will Be Reportedly Focused On TV

Android 4.4 KitKat Will Be Reportedly Focused On TV

Google is rumored to unveil Nexus 5 as well as Android 4.4 KitKat in the near future, but the company still hasn’t said exactly when it is going to make these announcements. We’ve already heard and seen a lot about the Nexus 5, and even though Android 4.4 KitKat screenshots have leaked time and again, there’s really not much information available at this point in time regarding the changes that have been made. According to a new report by Korean publication ETNews, Google might be focusing on the TV experience with the next iteration of Android.

It has already been rumored that the company is looking to rename its TV offering to Android TV. As per the report, Google has “greatly improved” the user experience as well as the user interface of its TV offering. Improvements have reportedly also been made to the app development environment, and rumor has it that changes have been made to the interface between the TV and smart devices. All of these changes are expected to come with Android 4.4 KitKat, along with the major change of rebranding the entire offering, replacing Google TV with Android TV. A latest rumor suggests that the Nexus 5 announcement takes place on November 1st, hopefully Google will take more about Android 4.4 then, and reveal to the world if it has any intentions of pushing harder into the TV market.

Screenshots Of Redesigned Google Play Store Leaked

Screenshots Of Redesigned Google Play Store Leaked

Google is expected to make a major Android related announcement later this month. It is on track to unveil Android 4.4 KitKat, which is expected to bring a number of major changes. It appears that Google is also working on a redesign for Google Play Store. Leaked images show a redesigned Google Play Store for Android version 4.4, to be absolutely clear, its not Android version 4.4 but the app version of the Play Store. It can not be said for sure if this redesigned app will be released alongside the next major Android update.

One major change shown off by the leaked images is the replacement of Google Play Store’s existing overlay menu system with a slide-out navigation menu. This isn’t something entirely new, Google has favored this navigation menu in a number of its mobile apps, so it doesn’t really come as a surprise to see that it might do the same with Play Store for Android. With a number of major options being moved to the slide-out menu, the overlay menu seems to only include the Help and Settings menus. Apparently this redesigned version is already being tested on Android 4.4 devices, which could mean that its being tested out on the yet to be released Nexus 5 smartphone. Still, it not known right now if Google plans on rolling out Play Store version 4.4 prior to the release of Android 4.4 KitKat. [Images via AndroidPolice]

Nexus 5 And Android 4.4 KitKat Make An Appearance On Video

Everyone knows that it is only a matter of time before Google officially announces the Nexus 5 smartphone and the next Android OS update, Android 4.4 KitKat. Both announcements are expected to be made at the same event, which some expect will be conducted later this month. There have been a few Nexus 5 leaks over the past few weeks, we’ve also see screenshots of Android 4.4 appearing online. For the first time, a purported Nexus 5 running Android 4.4 KitKat makes its appearance in a video that has been posted online.

For your viewing pleasure, the folks at Club SFR Smartphones have uploaded a seven minute video which shows off the purported Nexus 5 running the upcoming Android OS update. There exists that possibility that the device you see in this video is a prototype of Google’s next generation Nexus smartphone. There’s also the possibility that the OS seen here, which is still labeled as Key Lime Pie, is a very early iteration of KitKat. Still, those who’re a little bit curious about both products might want to check out the video. Recent rumors suggest that Google might announce Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 on October 15th, though the company is yet to roll out invites for an event on that day, which is merely 48 hours away.

Nexus 5 Cases Already Being Teased

Nexus 5 Cases Already Being Teased

The Nexus 5 is without a doubt one of the most highly anticipated smartphones of this quarter. Google is yet to officially announce the device, though given the fact that Nexus 4 is no longer available through the Play Store, its only a matter of time before the Nexus 5 is made official. Spigen, a mobile accessory manufacturer based out of South Korea, has already started teasing Nexus 5 cases. The teaser image doesn’t exactly reveal much in terms of design, but it does resemble the device we’ve seen in purported leaked pictures of the next generation Nexus smartphone.

Earlier today we picked up on a rumor which claimed that Nexus 5 will be announced next week, on Tuesday October 15th to be precise. Its merely five days away and Google is yet to roll out invites for the event, so at this point in time this date hasn’t been officially confirmed. The Nexus 5 is expected to come with top tier specifications, such as the quadcore Snapdragon 800 processor from Qualcomm and a 5 inch full 1080p HD display. It is also going to be the first smartphone to ship with Android 4.4 KitKat, the next major update to Google’s mobile platform. The 16GB Nexus 5 will reportedly be priced at $299 off contract.
