Nexus 5 And Android 4.4 KitKat Launch Rumored For October 15th

Nexus 5 And Android 4.4 KitKat Launch Rumored For October 15th

The world anxiously waits on Google to make two announcements, one related to software and the other to hardware. Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 are both rumored to be launched in October, but according to a new rumor, they might be unveiled next week. Tuesday, October 15th, is said to be the day when Google finally lifts the wraps off Nexus 5 and its next major Android update. According to CNET UK, rumors about the launch date comes from “whispers around the campfire” at Google Launchpad, which was a two week event aimed to help startups develop their business.

Google has already confirmed that Android 4.4 KitKat is the moniker of its next major update, whereas the Nexus 4 has sold out at the Play Store and Google has opted not to restock it. This is seen as a clear indication that a successor is just around the corner. We’ve already heard a lot of rumors about the Nexus 5 which is said to have been manufactured by LG, it collaborated with Google on the Nexus 4 as well. Recently a purported service manual of the Nexus 5 was leaked online, it revealed the entire spec list. This smartphone is expected to have a 2.3GHz quadcore Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor with 2GB RAM, a 5 inch full HD display, 8 megapixel rear camera as well as wireless charging.

Nexus 5 Will Reportedly Have MEMS Camera

Nexus 5 Will Reportedly Have MEMS Camera

There has been no shortage of Nexus 5 rumors over the past couple of weeks, particularly after Google cleaned out the Play Store of all Nexus 4 inventory. That was taken as a sign of a successor being just around the corner, and it seems plausible too. The Nexus 5 leaks have been coming in almost every day, but still Google hasn’t said when it intends to launch the next generation Nexus smartphone. A new report suggests that the Google Nexus 5 may have a MEMS camera.

The MEMS camera module has been developed by Lite-On Technology and DigitalOptics, the module is essentially similar to the Lytro camera. Basically, it provides ultra-fast focusing, nearly 7 times faster than existing smartphone camera modules. Since MEMS autofocus actuators use less than 1mW of power, they also extend battery life and reduce thermal load on the image sensor, lens and other critical components. Apart from the MEMS camera, previous rumors suggest that the Nexus 5 might have a 5 inch full 1080p HD display, a quadcore Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor with 2GB of RAM, an 8 megapixel rear and 1.2 megapixel front camera, 16GB of onboard storage as well as a 2,300mAh battery. Nexus 5 is believed to be the first smartphone that will ship with Android 4.4 KitKat. No release or pricing information is available as yet.

How Android 4.4 Came To Be Called KitKat

How Android 4.4 Came To Be Called KitKat

Google’s next Android platform update isn’t going to be called Key Lime Pie, even though the moniker has been in the rumor cycle for well over a year now. Earlier today the company officially announced what the next update is going to be called: Android 4.4 KitKat. That is correct, they’ve named the release after Nestle’s popular chocolate. One might believe that some sort of money might be involved in this deal seeing as how KitKat has now been attached to a platform that powers more than one billion devices around the globe. One couldn’t be more wrong. John Lagerling, director of Android global partnerships, told the BBC that “this is not a money-changing-hands kind of deal.”

Lagerling added that the idea behind this was to do something “fun and unexpected.” He also revealed that they decided to go with the chocolate late last year as they realized “few people actually know the taste of a key lime pie.” Lagerling said that he made a “cold call” to Nestle’s advertising agency in the UK at the end of November last year and the very next day he was invited to take part in a conference call. Nestle decided to confirm the deal within 24 hours. Nestle’s marketing chief Patrice Bula said that they had decided “within an hour” to go ahead with this partnership. The deal was finalized at the Mobile World Congress 2013 in February. Nestle will now deliver more than 50 million KitKat bars featuring the Android mascot in 19 markets including U.S., UK, Japan, Russia, India and Brazil.

Android 4.4 KitKat Moniker Revealed As One Billion Device Activation Milestone Is Passed

Android 4.4 KitKat Moniker Revealed As One Billion Device Activation Milestone Is Passed

Vice President of Android, Chrome and Google Apps, Sundar Pichai, announced today that Google’s mobile platform has now been activated on more than one billion devices around the globe. To celebrate this occasion, a KitKat Android statue has been propped up outside the company’s Mountain View campus. Yes, that’s right, KitKat. The chocolate, if you’re still confused. Turns out, the next Android release is going to be named after the chocolate. Google has now unveiled Android 4.4 KitKat moniker, which replaces the much rumored Key Lime Pie label that most people expected to accompany the next platform update.

The official Android website has been updated to reflect this decision. It has also been revealed that the next major update won’t actually be called Android 5.0, it will be called Android 4.4. Nothing much has been revealed beyond this right now. A new promotion has been unveiled by both Google and KitKat, one can win Google Play Store credit or a new Nexus 7 2013 tablet. This change marks the switch from desserts to chocolates, Android versions have been named after popular desserts such as Ice Cream Sandwich, Donut and Eclair for a few years now.
