U.S. KitKat Update Roadmap For Samsung Phones And Tablets Confirmed

Samsung today has finally eased the pain for millions of U.S. consumers that have been waiting for Android 4.4.2 KitKat update. Google launched KitKat late last year, the first crop of smartphones and tablets to receive said update were from its Nexus lineup. Since then quite a few manufacturers have rolled out the update for select devices, though Samsung hadn’t formally laid down its U.S. roadmap until today. With updates rolling out today and continuing over the coming months, the company has revealed all devices that will be updated to the latest iteration of Android.

    Android’s “open-ness” is something of a double edged sword, while countless OEMs can develop their own devices with specifications they deem fit, those devices are often not able to run the latest iteration of Android primarily due to hardware incompatibility. This reflects on the global Android distribution statistics, with reveal that fragmentation is a major issue on this platform. Recently it has been reported that Google is working hard to curb fragmentation, and an allegedly leaked memo has now surfaced online which seems to dictate terms to OEMs, that their new phones must be able to run Android 4.4 KitKat, the latest iteration of Google’s mobile operating system.

    We reported yesterday that it was quite possible for Sprint to finally roll out Android 4.4 KitKat for its Galaxy S4 users in the very near future. A leaked memo pegged the release date on February 13th, and it has turned out to be spot on. Sprint Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 update is now available for download, users will now finally be able to jump up from Android 4.3 to the latest iteration of Google’s mobile operating system.

    Samsung is known for releasing multiple variants of its flagship smartphones, there are often so many that it becomes hard to keep track of all of them. These variants come with slight changes under the hood, so developers have to fashion their ROMs around them. Its no secret that there isn’t a lot of developer support for Samsung’s Exynos powered variants, but today the folks at CyanogenMod have released a test build of the CyanogenMod 11 for Galaxy S4 GT-I9500 ROM, which happens to be the international Exynos powered variant of the 2013 flagship. The ROM is based on Android 4.4 KitKat.

    Just over a week back T-Mobile started conducting a soak test of Android 4.4.2 for its Moto X. The process involves rolling out the new firmware update to a select few people who then try out said update to ensure that no bugs or issues remain to be fixed before the firmware is finally rolled out to the public. Once an update reaches the soak test step, its public release is expected within a couple of weeks. That’s exactly the timeline this particular update has followed, today the T-Mobile Moto X Android 4.4.2 update has finally been released.

    Only recently we reported that a Sprint subscriber had received the Moto X Android 4.4.2 update even though the carrier is yet to publicly roll out said firmware. Moto X users in the U.S. are anxiously waiting on their carriers to roll out the latest iteration of KitKat, but so far there’s no official word as to when said firmware is going to be released. It appears that T-Mobile might be gearing up to do so in the near future, as the carrier has started reaching out to people, inviting them to take part in a “soak test” for an upcoming firmware update.

    It goes without saying that people with carrier locked smartphones have to wait longer to receive the latest software updates. HTC One owners in the U.S. have been anxiously waiting for Android 4.4 KitKat to drop. Released late last year, the update brings a few visual enhancements as well as improvements under the hood. HTC U.S. has finally confirmed that the update has now entered carrier testing, and if all goes according to plan, the roll out may begin in the very near future.
