Galaxy Nexus CyanogenMod 11 Android 4.4 KitKat Stable Unofficial ROM Released

Galaxy Nexus CyanogenMod 11 Android 4.4 KitKat Stable Unofficial ROM Released

Nearly two years ago, Google launched the Galaxy Nexus smartphone. Developed in collaboration with Samsung, it was the first smartphone to run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Since then multiple Nexus smartphones have come and gone, and so have major Android OS updates. When Google unveiled Android 4.4 KitKat recently, Galaxy Nexus users expected that the company will support their device. Instead, Google announced that it would not release an official KitKat update for the Galaxy Nexus. Dejected owners then turned towards third-party developed ROMs, but there weren’t any stable ROMs available. If you have been waiting for one yourself, the wait if now over. A stable custom Galaxy Nexus Android 4.4 ROM has been released.

Built from AOSP, the CyanogenMod 11 custom Android 4.4 KitKat ROM for Galaxy Nexus is stable and all features are working. However, the ROMs status is still in beta because its missing some common CyanogenMod features, which are different from core Android OS features. Apart from a screenshot taking glitch, everything seems to be working. It goes without saying that flashing custom ROMs comes with its fair share of risks, so before you download the Galaxy Nexus CyanogenMod 11 Android 4.4 custom ROM, be sure that you know what you’re doing. The ROM and install instructions are available at XDA forums.

Android 4.4 KitKat Ported Onto HTC HD2

Android 4.4 KitKat Ported Onto HTC HD2It seems that the HTC HD2, despite being released about 4 years ago, is refusing to fade into obscurity. We had heard how the handset had managed to receive the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update, and now it looks like the HTC HD2 will also be on the receiving end of the Android 4.4 KitKat update, which is admittedly pretty impressive for such an old device! This port is courtesy of XDA Senior Member, chautruongthinh who managed to port the latest build of Android onto the device. However as expected, not everything is working yet and there are still some issues with the port that needs ironing out, so don’t expect to use this as a daily driver just yet.

As it stands mobile data, broken WiFi, broken SD card, and some graphical glitches are just some of the many issues plaguing the build at the moment, although the basics do work meaning that if you still have your HTC HD2 lying around and wanted to experiment, perhaps learn how to root or flash custom ROMs, we suppose now is as good a time as any to start practicing! We guess it’s not too surprising that Android 4.4 KitKat has managed to make its way onto the HD2. After all the purpose of KitKat was meant to support lower-end Android devices, particularly those which do not sport 1-2GB of RAM. In any case if any of our readers have tried this out, let us know in the comments below on how it is working out for you!

LG G2 Android 4.4 Update Coming Late Q1, 2014 In Canada

LG G2 Android 4.4 Update Coming Late Q1, 2014 In Canada

LG’s latest Android flagship smartphone, the G2, has brought in rave reviews. The device has been appreciated by Android enthusiasts around the world, and those who have already picked up a unit for themselves are anxiously waiting for Android 4.4 KitKat to drop. So far there hasn’t been any indication when the update is going to be released in the U.S., though word has arrived from LG Canada. Court Elliot, a representative for the company in Canada, says that LG G2 Android 4.4 update is going to be released in late Q1, 2014, which means possibly by the end of March next year.

Elliot also says that all carriers in the country are going to receive the update at the same time, though that doesn’t mean all carriers are going to release the update at the same time as well. Some carriers tend to test out the updates a little longer before rolling them out. The representative across the border did not comment on when the update is going to be released for LG Optimus G, the company’s former flagship which is currently running on Android 4.1.2. Those who are using the Verizon variant of the device in the U.S. can try out KitKat right now through an unofficial custom ROM.

Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition Stock Android 4.4 Update Available For Manual Download

Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition Stock Android 4.4 Update Available For Manual Download

The Google Play Edition variants of Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One were released earlier this year, they were said to offer the “Nexus” experience. What this basically means is that both devices run vanilla Android OS and will receive the latest Android updates earlier than the other variants. With Android 4.4 KitKat first being rolled out for Nexus devices and then the Moto X, owners of the Google Play Edition devices had to wait a bit longer than originally anticipated. The update has now been rolled out over-the-air, but if you can’t wait for the OTA notification to drop, the stock Android 4.4 OTA update for Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition is now available for manual download.

OTA updates are rolled out in stages and it may take a while before they become available for each and every user. By downloading the manual update file, users can flash the update themselves, though the procedure is a bit tricky as opposed to OTA updates, which are automatically downloaded and installed on the device itself. Just remember that to flash the firmware, the device must be running a stock build of Android, it must have a stock recovery and that it be unrooted. The firmware file of Android 4.4 update for Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition can be downloaded from here.

Android 4.4 For Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition Released

Android 4.4 For Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition ReleasedGood news Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition owners, it looks like if you have a hankering for some Android 4.4 KitKat action, you’re in luck because according to the Android Google+ page, it looks like the update is being rolled out as we speak. This Android 4.4 KitKat update will be rolled out alongside the HTC One Google Play Edition and if these updates are anything like how Google rolls out Android updates for their Nexus devices, expect it to be pushed out in phases that could span days to even weeks before it is your turn.

If anything we suppose this is the benefit of having a Google Play Edition phone which is the next best thing after owning a Nexus device. For those who might have missed the news, the Google Play Editions of the Galaxy S4 and the HTC One are essentially the same devices as their normal counterparts, with the main exception being that they run stock versions of Android as opposed to the skinned versions, like TouchWiz for Samsung and Sense for HTC. While they might not necessarily get the latest updates as quick as Nexus phones, we reckon it’s still fast enough. If you own either device and have received the update, let us know in the comments below!

So far HTC has revealed when exactly it plans to update a few of its devices, and so has Motorola, which actually rolled out KitKat for Moto X even before the Google Play Edition smartphones got the update. A purported memo from Samsung India’s R&D department has been leaked online and it details when Samsung plans to update few of its devices to Android 4.4 KitKat. There’s no way to confirm the authenticity of this document, but its the only kind of roadmap related to the update for Samsung devices that’s available out there at this point in time.

According to the document, Samsung Galaxy S4 model GT-I9500 and Galaxy Note 3 model SM-N900 will be updated to Android 4.4 KitKat in January 2014.
