HTC Details Android 4.4 Update Roadmap For HTC One And Droid DNA

HTC Details Android 4.4 Update Roadmap For HTC One And Droid DNA

Ever since Google announced Android 4.4 KitKat, Android users have been itching to know when the update is going to drop for their particular devices. Some OEMs have detailed their roadmaps, at least for their flagship devices. HTC has offered additional details about the update roadmap for this year’s flagship, the HTC One, as well as the Droid DNA. Rest assured, the Taiwanese manufacturer has every intention to release KitKat for both of these devices, but its going to take some time.

The company revealed these details through its official HTC USA Twitter account. On Android 4.4 KitKat for Droid DNA, HTC says that the update is going to be released by the end of Q1, 2014, so that’s basically a four month timeframe which is “pending certification from your carrier.” What this means is that carrier testing of the update might delay its release beyond the timeframe, it can’t be said for sure, but it certainly is a possibility. HTC One owners on Verizon have yet to receive the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update, the compay says that the update for compatibility will happen this week and Android 4.3 itself will come in December. It was quick to point out that the delay in Android 4.3 release isn’t going to delay the delivery of Android 4.4 KitKat with HTC Sense 5.5, which is scheduled to drop by the end of January, 2014.

Verizon Moto X Android 4.4 Update Released

Verizon Moto X Android 4.4 Update Released

In what is definitely a move that’s caught a lot of us by surprise, Motorola announced today that Verizon Moto X Android 4.4 update has been released. We reported yesterday that Big Red has been conducting soak tests for this update, but no one had imagined that Verizon would be the first to push this update out even when Google Play Editions of the HTC One and Galaxy S4 haven’t received the Android 4.4 KitKat update. Motorola hasn’t said when Moto X on other carriers is going to receive the update.

Verizon Moto X will jump from Android 4.2 to Android 4.4 and bring all the KitKat goodies in the process. For example, there’s an improved phone dialer which does much more than just calls, new gallery effects, color emojis, the all new Hangouts app with SMS integration, updated camera app and a whole lot of enhancements and improvements. Motorola assures us that this is just the beginning and that it will have more KitKat for Moto X news to share for other countries and carriers in the near future. Verizon is going to roll out the update in phases, so don’t freak out if the update doesn’t immediately pop up on your device. A little patience will go a long way.

Verizon Begins Soak Test Process For Moto X Android 4.4 Update [Rumor]

Verizon Begins Soak Test Process For Moto X Android 4.4 Update [Rumor]

Most Moto X customers are likely waiting patiently for Android 4.4 KitKat update to drop. Google has already released the update for its Nexus devices, whereas other OEMs are expected to follow suit soon. Given Motorola’s relationship with Google, its wholly owned by the latter, one might expect Motorola’s recent devices to receive the update sooner rather than later. While it has already been said that Android 4.4 for Moto X is going to be released in the coming weeks, it seems that Verizon tends to push out the update within a few weeks as well. Apparently Big Red has started soak test process for Android 4.4 Moto X update.

“Soak test” is basically a fancy term for beta test, a few users are selected by Verizon and Motorola who receive the update prior to everyone else and report back to the companies if they find any bugs or issues. A leaked screenshot point toward the possibility that the soak tests being conducted are indeed for the Android 4.4 Moto X update, which brings KitKat goodness to Motorola’s flagship. No word has been received as yet if the other carriers that offer the Moto X have begun their own processes as yet to test out Android 4.4 prior to its release. Soak tests usually take a few weeks, after which we should hopefully see a release. No official release timeframe is available at this point in time. [Image via AndroidPolice]

HTC One Google Play Edition Android 4.4 Update Might Be Released Soon

HTC One Google Play Edition Android 4.4 Update Might Be Released Soon

Android enthusiasts around the world wait patiently for the latest firmware update to be rolled out for their devices. Google has already released Android 4.4 KitKat for its Nexus devices, the next in line are the Google Play Edition variants of the HTC One and the Galaxy S4. Google Play Edition handsets receive the update directly from Google, just like Nexus devices. HTC has announced via Twitter that it has delivered the KitKat update code to Google for the Google Play Edition HTC One. The timing of KitKat’s roll out will now be “determined by Google.”

HTC was actually one of the first OEMs to reveal Android 4.4 update roadmap for its flagship after Google unveiled the firmware. The Taiwanese manufacturer has already confirmed that all variants of the HTC One in the U.S. are going to receive the latest Android update within 90 days. As far as the Google Play Edition variant is concerned, it may only be a matter of days before Google starts to roll out the update. In any case, users of this particular variant will definitely not have to wait until February, based on the 90 days timeline, to receive the update on their device. Samsung is yet to reveal when we can expect Android 4.4 KitKat update for Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition.

Android 4.4 Factory Images For Nexus 4, Nexus 7 Revealed

Android 4.4 Factory Images For Nexus 4, Nexus 7 RevealedIt was just two days back when we brought you word that Android 4.4 KitKat has rolled out for the Nexus 7 tablet, although it is meant for the Wi-Fi only model. Apparently, the manual update packages for the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 were said to have been released yesterday too, with the promise of Android 4.4 KitKat for the Nexus 4 and the Wi-Fi + 3G/LTE enabled model of the Nexus 7 would arrive in due time. There has been no Android 4.4 KitKat OTA update in sight so far, but Google has already rolled out the factory images of Android 4.4 KitKat for the respective devices.

Of course, this would translate to your willingness in doing away with all the data on your tablet and start right from the beginning. The factory images which are made available are meant for the Nexus 4, 2012 Nexus 7 (Wi-Fi + 3G), and 2013 Nexus 7 (Wi-Fi + LTE). The Nexus 10 still lacks a factory image, but considering how the OTA is on its way for that particular tablet, it would not be too much of a hassle to wait a little bit longer. Do bear in mind that should one flash one’s device back to stock, there is more margin for error as Murphy waits to strike. A manual update would have less hassle to work with.

    Unofficial CM11 Android 4.4 KitKat For Galaxy S3 I747 And T999 Released

    Unofficial CM11 Android 4.4 KitKat For Galaxy S3 I747 And T999 Released

It was only a matter of time for source-built custom ROMs to be released, seeing as how Android 4.4 KitKat has already been released to AOSP. Google is yet to roll out the official update images for its supported existing Nexus devices, currently the only device out there right now running an official build is the Nexus 5. A lot of custom Android 4.4 KitKat ROMs have already been released, and the latest comes as an unofficial build of CyanogenMod 11 for Samsung Galaxy S3 I747 and T999, that’s the AT&T and T-Mobile variants, respectively.

Despite being source-built, this is a beta custom ROM that’s likely to have a few bugs, so if you want a daily driver that doesn’t have any quirks this probably won’t be the best choice for you. While most features are said to be working, the developer says that currently emoticons in keyboard when using Hangouts and front facing camera are broken in this particular build. These issues may be addressed in a future build. It goes without saying that flashing custom ROMs requires quite a bit of knowledge, not only will it void warranty, there’s a big possibility to things going awry if you don’t know what you’re doing. Proceed with installation only if you’re sure of what you’re doing. Download links for the unofficial CM11 Android 4.4 KitKat build for AT&T Galaxy S3 I747 and T-Mobile Galaxy S3 T999 have been added.

Xperia Z Android 4.4 Custom ROM Released

Xperia Z Android 4.4 Custom ROM Released

Google’s latest Android 4.4 update is in the process of being rolled out, it will be initially released for compatible existing Nexus devices over the next few weeks. OEMs have yet to reveal when they’ll be releasing Android 4.4 KitKat for their devices, Samsung has apparently begun testing the update for Galaxy Note 3. Until the official release happens, Android enthusiasts longing to get a taste of KitKat can turn toward version 4.4 custom ROMs based on AOSP. Today, a Sony Xperia Z Android 4.4 custom ROM has been released, it is a stable build with very few bugs.

All main functions of the Xperia Z such as GPS, telephone, texts, Wi-Fi, camera and more are working in this ROM. The developer notes two glitches, one with manual selection of a mobile network, where the “Please wait…” dialog stays even after the Xperia Z is registered on a network. Tapping the home button makes the dialog vanish, so its a simple fix. Calendar sync with Google is another glitch that might be faced on a fresh installation, rebooting the device two times is described as a fix to get the Calendar syncing again. The compatible Google apps package comes bundled with this ROM, so you won’t have to search for it once you’ve flashed it. Flashing custom ROMs is tricky if you’ve never done it before, so proceed only if you know exactly what you’re doing. The Android 4.4 custom ROM for Sony Xperia Z can be downloaded from here.

Android 4.4 For Galaxy Note 3 Enters Testing Phase

Android 4.4 For Galaxy Note 3 Enters Testing Phase

Android enthusiasts around the world wait anxiously for the latest Android 4.4 KitKat update to arrive on their devices. Google has said that it will push out the update for supported Nexus devices within the coming weeks. Out of the OEMs, only HTC has given a timeframe on when to expect the update for its One smartphone in North America. The rest will first test the update prior to rolling it out, then there’s the matter of carrier approval, which may take a few weeks as well. The roll out is definitely going to take some time, but Samsung Galaxy Note 3 owners may find solace in the fact that the manufacturer has apparently started testing the update for its new phablet.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 was announced back in September. It was definitely one of the most anxiously awaited devices that the company was expected to release this year. It ships with Android 4.3 pre-installed, Samsung is yet to provide a timeframe for when it will release Android 4.4 KitKat for it. The bit about the update entering testing phase comes from the folks at Sammobile, who have a good track record when it comes to unreleased Android firmwares. There haven’t been rumors of the update being tested for any other Samsung device, so its likely that the Note 3 might become the first Galaxy device to receive Android 4.4.

Petition Urges Google To Reconsider Android 4.4 For Galaxy Nexus

Petition Urges Google To Reconsider Android 4.4 For Galaxy Nexus

Last week Google finally revealed that the Android 4.4 KitKat update is going to be rolled out in the near future. It has already released the Nexus 5, which is the first smartphone to run KitKat out of the box. Several existing Nexus devices will no doubt be the first ones to receive the update in the coming weeks, unfortunately, Galaxy Nexus has been left out. Google has confirmed that the Galaxy Nexus isn’t going to receive an official Android 4.4 update, a decision which has irked many Galaxy Nexus users. An online petition has been started to urge Google to reconsider, and it has gained a lot of traction.

As of this writing, the petition started by Max Duckwitz from Germany has amassed more than 14,900 signatures. Google’s justification to drop support for Galaxy Nexus is that the smartphone is over its 18 month support time, but many Galaxy Nexus owners believe otherwise. They believe that the smartphone should be supported regardless of the fact that its nearly two years old. Duckwitz says that all of the signatures and comments will be printed and sent to Android chief Sundar Pichai along with a short letter and the text of the petition. It can not be said for sure if Google will reconsider, but those who want a taste of KitKat have a couple of alternatives available. Several developers have already created custom Android 4.4 ROMs for the Galaxy Nexus, which seem to be working fine, barring a few bugs.

Nexus S Gets A Custom Android 4.4 KitKat ROM Of Its Own

Nexus S Gets A Custom Android 4.4 KitKat ROM Of Its OwnWith the Galaxy Nexus not receiving the official Android 4.4 KitKat update, we guess it’s safe to say that the Nexus S will not be receiving it either. However it looks like the hardworking Android developer community has figured how to not only give the Galaxy Nexus an Android 4.4 KitKat ROM, but it seems that the Nexus S will also be receiving a custom Android 4.4 KitKat ROM which according to reports, is “running pretty fast”, but unfortunately we do not own a Nexus S so we are unable to prove those claims.

The ROM is developed by XDA member, cn.fyodor and as it stands, the ROM is an alpha build meaning that there is still a lot of the ROM that has yet to gain functionality or is still buggy. Some of the issues include how some Google apps aren’t working, but for those who aren’t too fussed, the ROM will still allow for calls to go through and web browsing amongst other features. For those who still own the Nexus S and are using it, if you’re interested you can hit up the XDA forums for the download. As always when installing custom ROMs and whatnot, make sure you know what you are doing before proceeding, and always make sure to back up your device before doing so.
