Google aiming for more Android tablet apps

Yesterday Google announced the Nexus 10 tablet, proving that the company is serious about moving further into the tablet market. They also announced an updated version to the Nexus 7 that now comes with 32GB of storage and 3G capabilities. With the company’s obvious dedication to tablets, it’s no surprise that Google wants more Android tablet apps in its Google Play store.

The Nexus 10 is incredibly light and comes with an amazing high-resolution screen with a 2560×1600 resolution. It’s got a powerful processor and obviously a strong army of Google apps and services. However, tablet-specific apps have been somewhat of a hit-or-miss with Android, but Google is looking to change that.

Robert Hamilton, product manager on Google’s mobile team, says that Google would “like developers to think more and more about great tablet experiences,” and that “there’s a lot of really good Android tablets out there now.” Hamilton mentioned the Nexus 10 specifically and said that if the Nexus 10 is going to be successful, it needs developers that can make great tablet apps for it.

Hamilton also says that he’s seeing “smart” Android developers go beyond just supporting a bigger screen when developing tablet apps, but also thinking about the user experience as a whole, such as usage habits like where tablets are used, how they’re being used, and what they’re being used for.

Google Play closing in on Apple’s store with 700K apps, says Bloomberg

Google Play store racks up 700K apps

Amidst all the Nexus excitement from yesterday, Google just hit the 700,000 Android app milestone in its Play Store, according to Bloomberg. That would put it near par with Apple, who announced just last month that its App Store hit that same figure. Like Cupertino’s iOS shop, Play (which started off as the Android Market) has been peddling its robot wares since 2008, though the store opened several months after Apple’s. Google may have been set to trumpet the new figure during the Nexus launch yesterday as they did last June at I/O, but a certain Sandy may have wrenched that plan — so, we’re still waiting for a formal announcement.

Rara.com comes to iOS, Windows 8 and more countries

Rara.com has been mighty busy since its luddite-friendly music streaming service launched at the end of last year, and now it’s reporting the outcome of those 10 months of toil. In addition to an improved web experience and new Android widget, an AirPlay-compatible app for iOS is now available, with software for Windows 8 arriving alongside its launch. Rara’s 18 million tracks haven’t only invaded other platforms, but other countries, too — residents of Brazil, Mexico, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, South Africa and Portugal have joined the party, bringing the total number of compatible countries to 27. Lenovo is also getting a piece of the action, as a worldwide agreement means Rara software will now come pre-installed on the manufacturer’s Android tablets and Windows 8 gear. Evernote for Android updates with simplified editing, improved offline notebooks

Evernote has long been the go-to note-taking and to-do list app for a lot of users, mostly because the app receives a lot of thorough updates very frequently, and today’s update is no exception. Evernote for Android has updated with better offline notebooks, simplified note editing, and a new widget for your device’s home screen.

First off, Evernote added the ability of selecting and downloading multiple notebooks at once, making it quicker to move a handful of notebooks offline. Offline notebooks allows you to access your notebooks quickly and easily without having an internet connection. Then, once you’re back to a WiFi or data connection, you can upload any changes you made.

Evernote also gave a slight makeover to the Note Editor toolbar by cleaning it up a bit and getting rid of some clutter, which was a huge issue for a lot of Evernote users. Evernote moved a lot of the unnecessary toolbar features into the Action Bars along the top. Now, the toolbar only has the necessary editing tools that you really need.

Evernote also made some updates to its widget by introducing a new “Grid” widget, and it’s designed to fit perfectly on any screen, no matter the size. To choose the new widget, just tap and hold on your handset’s home screen and choose the Evernote Grid Widget. Then, just select the features that you want the widget to display, and it will appear on your home screen right away.

The update for Evernote is available now in the Google Play store, as well as the separate Evernote Widget app. Both are free downloads.

Google Play in-app subscriptions get free trial option

Google Play in-app subscriptions get free trial option

In-app subscriptions found their way to Google Play this May, and now the folks in Mountain View are letting Android developers offer them with free trials. In order to make use of the freebie spans, you’ll have to fork over your payment information to Page and Co. as if it were a run-of-the-mill purchase, but you won’t get hit with the monthly fee until the dev-determined trial stretch is over. Developers looking to serve up samples of their episodic content can set a trial period that’s at least seven days or longer right within the Developer Console, which means they can add the gratis option or alter its length without having to modify their apps. If the duration of the gratis subscription is changed, the tweak will only apply to new subscribers.
